I tie mine together in a long tail about eight to ten onion per string and hang them up in the shed and letting them hang and putting them in the storage just before freezing My father did it this way for years and all you have to buy is the string! Howdy. You may be able to beat your time/$ by making a mat using Hay bail twine tied to each stick to make a space between each stick. A 5' rack could have 3-4ea tied twines. Spaces could be varied per mat. Roll it up for storage.
Nicely done. It seems like a good, cost effective but functional design. Do you still tie them into the traditional strings of onions to hang up once they're cured?

Simon B we usually don't. We have tried it just didn't feel it was worth the effort.
