The anime mentioned nanomachines and before Sage could make the joke, my brain began screaming "PLEASE! FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS DECENT, SAGE, MAKE THE JOKE! MY BONER *NEEDS* THIS!"
Fun fact: The actual devadasi were, in certain ancient Hindu traditions, women sworn to the service of a particular temple and its patron god, who often danced in the streets as part of religious celebrations and may have prostituted themselves in a ritual capacity. After the the British abolished the temple patronage system-previously the devadasi and their temples had been supported by pious aristocrats in the same way that big donors in Europe financed cathedrals-and began to crack down on street dancing (because "oh no the immorality"), the whole devadasi culture went into massive decline before ultimately being outlawed in 1988, decades after it had basically gone extinct. In other words, the whole connection between sexuality and the divine is actually baked into the very title of the show. And that's a great theme! But the execution...
The story of Calvin Coolidge's love life and reproductive habits near a chicken farm was *way* more interesting than this anime. Good show, Sage! You teach history, and you help me ignore a pile of stinking shit. Truly, you are a hero beyond all others.
Casey J To be fair, besides running out of money, the Tokyo Broadcasting System told Anno he couldn't air the original ending of Evangelion because of it's graphic, sexual, and violent content.
I think something Eva does well is use the audience's discomfort with young teens in sexual situations as a way to put the violence in context. Pretty early in the show, those kids are trained killers with the equivalent of government paychecks and combat licenses. And then the next question is,does all of this chaos become manageable just because someone turns 18? Its all about social context, and that certainly challenged my views. In the distant past when most people died at thirty, 15 year-olds were married soldiers quite often. Would we go back to that if things got tense enough? obviously, this show is not pro enough to handle those themes, but it does illustrate how hard that was to pull off. Sorry to necrocomment, just freewriting.
I have doubt on your reasoning. Before EVA, there are quiet a number of animations that put teen like figure into sex, take a look at those "Cream Lemon" series since 1989. Before EVA, there are a also bunch of animations that put primary students into giant robot to fight earth's enemy, Sunrise made a lot of those since 1991. What EVA did in 1997 is focus on the people who involve in the war. To be precise, EVA focus on their fear when facing enemy, their motivation of going into the cockpit, their bonding between the chosen few and normal people and their desire (include sexual desire). In conclude, focus on people takes EVA to a new level. Not those sexual excitement.
I want a Bible Black review so badly, because it has the worst English dub ever put to anything. The dub is the stuff of legend, acting so wooden, it's like the speech tool on your computer decided to do voice work for hentai. I know, it's technically porn, but Sage did Angel Blade.
I'm hoping they both sit down to review Sekirei come 2018. Suave is probably going to perv out on the fan service while Sage tries (and succeeds) making his case about the quality of characters and writing. And I know Sage has seen it because he used a clip from the show in one of his introductory diatribes. I don't remember the episode he used it for, though, just that he started the thing off talking about the massive amount of female protagonists in anime. If anyone, or Sage, knows the episode, I want to watch it again. Not nearly enough kick-ass lady protagonists in animation, if you ask me.
Egie Asemota Oh, come on, there has to be SOMETHING that's decently acted. I refuse to believe that dub voice acting is so bad that they couldn't get it right for ONE hentai.
Ikrani i tried friend. honestly, hearing the dialogue be so....descriptive is what ruins it for me. it sounds so damn forced, akward and takes you uot of the movie.
Egie Asemota Funny, because that's what takes me out of a lot of the subs. They say what's going on even while it's happening, like it's made for elderly Japanese people who are also blind.
14:36 It's doubly condemnable, because not only is he a child and she's an adult, but he is also a patient and she's a doctor. That deserves the highest degree of contempt. Is it possible that this anime is less a cash-grab clone, and more of a call-out clone? Like, by going a step further into the realm of 'bad', they hoped to call attention to Eva's flaws? I mean, if you think about it, child abuse is almost the sub-plot of Eva; something fans are encouraged to overlook, by the presence of an over-the-top God vs Humanity plot...
Did anyone look at the scene at 12:51 and thought it ripped off a similar shot from the first episode of EVA? Seriously, this rips off EVA in more than just plot points.
Thats the exact reason I came to youtube after seeing this on his site. Not only is the whole plot point "military is useless and want to use nukes" copy paste, but even the scene itself is the same, except that on guy is a civilian and slightly different colours.
As much as I want to turn into a mess of orange juice when I give any credence to this show, the title (spelt devadasi in human speak) is a sort of holy courtesan in a Hindu temple. Another review of this show talks about it more (if you really care at this point). ruclips.net/video/SEhkCGOpahk/видео.html
I just want to say that I'm a 40 year old woman who thinks you're hysterical. (I'm trying to get my kids to subscribe to you.) It's nice to finally hear my own opinions come out of someone else's mouth! Keep up the good work! I hope your mom's proud, because I sure as hell would be!!

Speaking of Metal Gear at 18:41, what ever happened to Bennett's video game reviews? Did he ever comment on why he took them all down? I'd love to see his MGS4 review again, at least.
I think I know why this show is so weirdly focused on sex. It was made by a hentai studio, they did some fucked up hentai called "Night Shift Nurses" I haven't seen it myself but I've heard very bad things. So my guess is that were going to make this a full on hentai, but the ages of the characters stopped them and they figured it would make more money if it was just a regular OVA. So they reworked the sex scenes and relegated some(like the one where the boss lady rapes the main character) to offscreen moments of horror. So this could of been worse, we could of had actual scenes of children having sex and one scene of a child getting raped. So I think we dodged a bullet on this one, guys. Well not so much dodged as "manged to take it in someplace nonlethal" We still got hit, it just didn't kill us this time.
hankmillenium2000 Their laws regarding the age of consent and things like that were fluctuating a lot during the production. So they were forced to change a lot of things after they became illegal. Like depicting children in sexual situations. That was pretty on the fence when this was made and came out.
hankmillenium2000 I'm not really an expert on Japanese law so I'm not entirely sure when the worked that business out. All I know is that for a while this show was released and branded under an all ages label, and then changed to an adults only one. Now here's the fun part, nothing was changed when it was made adults only. They first released and marketed this (child)sex obsessed piece of garbage as something appropriate for children to watch.Only later, after a few law changes did they change it to adults only. How fucked up is that? I mean would you market this shit as a show for kids?
+BZDsentai Hey, the first Night Shift Nurses is actually pretty good. It deals with abuse of power in hospitals and you can't help but feel sorry for the nurses mentally breaking down. The sequel is indeed awful, though. Also, the "adult content" rating thing was just for distribution, not production, and it happened after it was already marketed as "all ages" when the law changed. So it wasn't really meant to be a hentai, probably because they wanted to bank on the popularity of EVA.

I know anime typically sexualizes teenagers but this got downright creepy at times. At least RahXephon gave that aspect with realism and taste by showing Ayato had restraint. Heck, even the Maxx comic does this so much better with how Mr. Gone went nuts because he couldn't find sympathy since he was sexually abused by a woman as a child.
The question now stands: In terms of clones produced due to production and success of the original anime, which anime has the worst clones? Evangelion or Sword Art Online? It's crazy to think that not only did SAO create more clones that are qualitatively acceptable, but surpass the original. Eva, on the other hand, has maybe one or two good clones. Argento Soma and Dual Parallel Trouble Adventure are more prominent eva clones than bokurano. Bokurano seems more like a deconstruction of mech with the monster of the week formula. I have a hard time drawing parallels between the 2 other than teens and robots.

Too bad all of sages video game reviews are gone forever. Even on his own site. I really would have loved to see some of those. Along with his unedited videos, where entire chunks of video are muted.
Say what you will about RWBY, but their at least incredibly self aware of their blatant references, and they never try to openly insult their audience. They also don't have goDDAMN STATUTORY RAPE
RWBY takes itself seriously well treating the references etc. as a way to include humor and acknowledgement to what helped create the world and its concepts. Its not perfect but at least the reasoning is sound
Surprised you didn't mention the creepy scientist with the glasses that was making all those comments about little girls was voiced by Gene Starwind xD
The mobile version of RUclips likes to desync at times, but does catch up after a while. I mention this because it caused "This development is literally because of-" to cut directly into "A: the sexual assault of a child."
i will give evangelion this, it was genuinely trying to do something unique and complex... it kind of failed but they were genuine with their efforts instead of jsut ripping off something else
"And once you learn about these characters the last thing you want is for them to survive" huh so like the real Evangelion then? That's right I said it fight me comment section
Knight Hunters/Weiss Kruz is like a religious experience in hoaky anime form. The original series is a treasure trove you could analyze for many, many episodes.
You know what? After years of contemplation, measuring the good and the bad and doubting my own opinion, I finally decided that I am a fan of EVA. Why? Who cares? I just find it incredibly entertaining, Misato is the only animated woman I sincerely have the hots for and I will have the Fanta orange song played at my funeral. I! LOVE! EVA! And no matter how fucked up the cast is, I am FAR worse anyway.
Holy fucking shit. The title sounded kinda familiar. And then I remembered why. Some time ago, I watched this documentary about Devadasi. They are apparently a kind of "sacred" prostitutes in India. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devadasi I guess they didn't know that, but still...I can't stop thinking about it now.
Some people aim high with their work... then there are those who aim so low that they could shoot the nuts off a roach. Congrats for somehow creating a Eva clone that is worse than Eva.
Robert Wicks voices the pervy boss and Steve Staley voices Not Shinji, which just reminds you that you could be watching Outlaw Star instead of this shit.
Not hentai, just really trashy anime that, if memory serves, swapped out the christain imagery from Evangelion with tantric stuff. Bennett covers probably the most egregious element of this series sexuality but the rest of it was tamer by comparison.
It was a combination of the Blistered Thumbs division of Channel Awesome breaking up and probably a work overload. It takes a lot of time to fully review a game, on top of producing Anime Abandon, and I imagine he decided to just stick with Anime Abandon because he enjoyed it more and because it was much more popular. I'm glad he stuck with AA; while he was a very professional game critic with a lot to say, those videos just didn't have the entertainment value of AA, or, for example, the antics of AngryJoe's game reviews.
That's true especially if you go all in like Sage or Joe. I do reviews on my channel and although there simple compare to what Sage does here, it can take several hours to edit them all together. That not on top of playing, taking notes, and writing a script.
Bit the bullet and properly watched this sucker after forever. It was definitely head scratching, and incredibly squicky at points…but kinda amusing in its blatant unoriginality and random bizarrity…and the ending was a hadk job…makes me think what the ova left out of the story, and does anyone know dubbed the director guy? His voice sounds really familiar. Also not-rei’s pretty cute. Also-Also, Michelle Ruff as not-asuka gave me vocal deja vu, which is another point towards my experience that if you watch enough dubbed anime, old or new, mainstream or obscure as hell like this mess, you start hearing the same people over and over.
I was so happy when you brought out the metal gear clip. I love that twisted pretzel nonsense it tries to tell you is a plot and when you've passed metal gear you've gone off the deep end into the abyss. Metal gear straddles that line of weird plot and needless confusion plot, but it is ok because it also has the gameplay to make the plot not the focus, just a driving force. when you take away gameplay from metal gear your left with mad plot salsa, and look at you without any chips.
The point is that he did that deliberately making fun from annoying otaku who start send him life threats because they disagree of direction of something what was planed just as Ideon homage. But the annoying otaku didn't catch the joke but find this series to well represent they soul.. in how full of self pretentious emo bull crap it is.
Even ignoring the "it's fiction, the characters are 0, quick, draw a birth certificate!" In this anime, I honestly see no reason, especially with the pills, it couldn't have MC's over the age of 21, the only reason the guy is the age they are is just to rip of NGE even more without even ripping off the reasons behind such concepts. Just...creepy, especially when the nurse comes onto him when hes medicated and confused, holy hell I think people would understand the problem an change the reviews ive seen praising this anime more if the genders were reversed...which is sad
As many other says, If you did a review to the animes which are pretty simillar like Neon Genesis Evanghelion or De:Vaddasy, why don't you do also a review to the RahXephon anime which you mentioned earlier in this video?RahXephon deserves better to have a review instead of this goddamn shittest possible anime ever existed!
I am so proud of you for using the 'Nanomachines, Son!" clip Sage.
Will the nanomachines make America great again?

Too bad all of sages video game reviews are gone forever.
Even on his own site.
I really would have loved to see some of those. Along with his unedited videos, where entire chunks of video are muted.
It even ripped off the same shot with the military men and the cigarettes. I thought you switched to Eva for a moment. Good God.
IVE BEEN IN THE DANGER ZONE!!!!!
OOOOOHHH YEEEEAAAHH!!
SUPER DRAGON
HE'S GOTTA BACYCLE
MINUS FIVE STARS
D180223 FAAAAT ASSES
Sage: hates referential humor
Also Sage: ARCHER CLIPS!!!
If only this episode had come two years later. There would have been SOOOOO many Darling in the FranXX memes.
Say what you will about RWBY, but their at least incredibly self aware of their blatant references, and they never try to openly insult their audience.
They also don't have goDDAMN STATUTORY RAPE
They just have Taiyang "Entire Team" Xiao Long.
+Florence MacKenna Don't forget Drunkle Qrow's alcoholism.
Self-awareness isn't an excuse, nor makes it any better. But, RWBY's blatant references are the least of its problems.
Have you set it to Wumbo? Either way RWBY is a pretty kickass show. I mean, I for one am eagerly awaiting Volume 4.
RWBY takes itself seriously well treating the references etc. as a way to include humor and acknowledgement to what helped create the world and its concepts. Its not perfect but at least the reasoning is sound
13:39 “Yeah! You can’t have a flashback with a flash forward in it.”
Unless you’re Christopher Nolan.
Surprised you didn't mention the creepy scientist with the glasses that was making all those comments about little girls was voiced by Gene Starwind xD
Oh god.
Bob Buckholtz. Very good actor
Seriously?! Oh god, no wonder he doesn't have much work now. (also explains why he's one of the few good vas from that)
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?
And Not Shinji is Harry.
Well, it's about time you did Excel Saga.
With the amount of times you've used clips from it this was inevitable.
It is Excel Saga right?
Rikdo Koshi approves of such a review.
NABESHIN!
i'd be happy with either of them. they are pure genius.
AGREED!
when he was describing the anime at the end I thought exactly the same, god I hope its excel saga!
i would have gone with a Curnel Mustang reference at that mini skirt bit
Sage, this is easily one of, if not the funniest episode. Please keep finding ways to use the Gendo outfit.
The mobile version of RUclips likes to desync at times, but does catch up after a while. I mention this because it caused "This development is literally because of-" to cut directly into "A: the sexual assault of a child."
"Vadasy" looks like a Hungarian familyname.
Sage made us sit through that abysmal crap and DIDN'T tell us what the 150th episode would be?! C'mon! The suspense is killing me!
It'd be hilarious if it was, but I think he should save that for the next Toonami month.
+zeldaed123 - If so I pray he doesn't bash it too much cause I love that series.
My least favorite mech trope is the implied sexual tension to pilot a mech. Can't just piloting a combat machine just be about that?
i will give evangelion this, it was genuinely trying to do something unique and complex... it kind of failed but they were genuine with their efforts instead of jsut ripping off something else
Did it fail?
Sorta.
stumbled upon this channel and haven't stop watching these for like 2 months now
Will you ever do a review of RahXephon?
I am agree with this propos al!👍I hope that too!
I've never heard of de:vadasy before and now I know why.
9:15 Are we not gonna talk about how there's a camera above a toilet?
Hmm, a poorly-done Eva ripoff with exploitative use of teenage sexuality... so, basically, this is a proto-Darling in the Franxx.
"And once you learn about these characters the last thing you want is for them to survive" huh so like the real Evangelion then? That's right I said it fight me comment section
Just gonna leave a like here, because damned if you're not absolutely right.
3:39 Looks like it's time for the Gendo Train.
Knight Hunters/Weiss Kruz is like a religious experience in hoaky anime form. The original series is a treasure trove you could analyze for many, many episodes.
20:55 Our Violence Jack review at last
Does anyone else think that the new robot that showed up at the end looked like the logo for the Ultimate Warrior?
4:57 hey look it's anime cyril figgis!!
oh god, does anime Cyril also have a subway footlong in his pants?
given the anime, he probably does.
Did you say Faggis?
Konaustin113 no
You know what? After years of contemplation, measuring the good and the bad and doubting my own opinion, I finally decided that I am a fan of EVA. Why? Who cares? I just find it incredibly entertaining, Misato is the only animated woman I sincerely have the hots for and I will have the Fanta orange song played at my funeral. I! LOVE! EVA! And no matter how fucked up the cast is, I am FAR worse anyway.
Why does this remind me of Star Driver and Captain Earth, only crappy.
Holy fucking shit. The title sounded kinda familiar. And then I remembered why. Some time ago, I watched this documentary about Devadasi.
They are apparently a kind of "sacred" prostitutes in India.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devadasi
I guess they didn't know that, but still...I can't stop thinking about it now.
Some people aim high with their work... then there are those who aim so low that they could shoot the nuts off a roach. Congrats for somehow creating a Eva clone that is worse than Eva.
I gonna guess the "it was all a dream" ending was done in relation to the original Evangelion ending with the Human Instrumentality Project.
I did some quick Ebay detective work. You can buy a copy of this trash for Fifty bucks. Ugh.
12:29. Wait... is that Michelle Ruff??!?!?!
I say that the next video is going to be either about Escaflowne OR Robotech.
I love robotech, that would be pretty rad!
You never know with this fine fellow.
Macross: Do You Remember Love?
Robert Wicks voices the pervy boss and Steve Staley voices Not Shinji, which just reminds you that you could be watching Outlaw Star instead of this shit.
Man I noticed this De:Vadasy is inspired from DEAVDASI which is a sanskrit word meaning a female servant of God.
what anime is that at 21:19 i remember seeing it a long time ago but o forgot the name
To whomever was first, you get the fabulous award of nothing!
Actually, you do get something; an entirely free trip to the
"I Don't Give a Fuck" museum. You get to go and ogle at all the fucks I don't give.
i wasnt first but i am pretty bored. it is one long hallway or is there multiple wings?
Just think Final Fantasy 13's level design, and you'd have the right idea.
sweet sounds fun. 1 ticket please
"Evangelion meets Straight Shotacon" is a more accurate name for this anime.
I would take the straight shotacon, just not the evangelion
Me too SS it's the best.
I remember the first time I saw "Kamasutra Evangelion"
Still as bad as I remember, and I still regret getting that DVD.
i'm scared of looking it up, but i'm guessing it's hentai?
Not hentai, just really trashy anime that, if memory serves, swapped out the christain imagery from Evangelion with tantric stuff. Bennett covers probably the most egregious element of this series sexuality but the rest of it was tamer by comparison.
150? Wow, congrats! I can't wait!
eh? sage used to review games as well where might i find them? also why did he stop?
It was a combination of the Blistered Thumbs division of Channel Awesome breaking up and probably a work overload. It takes a lot of time to fully review a game, on top of producing Anime Abandon, and I imagine he decided to just stick with Anime Abandon because he enjoyed it more and because it was much more popular. I'm glad he stuck with AA; while he was a very professional game critic with a lot to say, those videos just didn't have the entertainment value of AA, or, for example, the antics of AngryJoe's game reviews.
Irondrone4 ah i see thank you :P
I think there was also an issue with his recording software dying on him.
That's true especially if you go all in like Sage or Joe. I do reviews on my channel and although there simple compare to what Sage does here, it can take several hours to edit them all together. That not on top of playing, taking notes, and writing a script.
There's a video on his site, "A Farewell to Sage Reviews" that explains his decision to stop.
I like how 'the special' is how we're referring to it.
Oh, look... Sage is reviewing a shitty EVA fanfiction from the underbelly of internet fan culture. Oh wait... this is an actual anime? Mind = blown.
It's worse. This is actually an OVA adaptation of a game that was, as far as I have been able to find, a seemingly purposeful clone of eva.
11:49 Ripping off Evangelion much.
Eventually...eventually Sage has gotta admit how good Eva is.
Keep dreaming pal
Hard to admit something that isn't true.
He'll do that when he reviews Violence Jack
One day.
The point is that he did that deliberately making fun from annoying otaku who start send him life threats because they disagree of direction of something what was planed just as Ideon homage. But the annoying otaku didn't catch the joke but find this series to well represent they soul.. in how full of self pretentious emo bull crap it is.
Wait if the whole fighting aliens plot of this anime was a daydream that would mean this is canonically fan fiction.
13:05 YOU KILLED KREIGER'S CYBER WIFEU!!!
Are we just going to gloss over how big the kids' eyeballs apparently are? Do they just shrink with their sockets as they get older?
I sense Fist of the North Star the live action movie for Episode 150
That had a live-action movie?!
The co-review with NC
+falloutghoul1 it exist, and it is a low budget piece of crap that no one in the production gives a damn.
PrimusVsUnicron
Except he just did one for Speed Racer.
Draegon Manaka
I expected as much.
I'm thinking G Gundam or a sampling of Gundam as a whole.
Even ignoring the "it's fiction, the characters are 0, quick, draw a birth certificate!"
In this anime, I honestly see no reason, especially with the pills, it couldn't have MC's over the age of 21, the only reason the guy is the age they are is just to rip of NGE even more without even ripping off the reasons behind such concepts.
Just...creepy, especially when the nurse comes onto him when hes medicated and confused, holy hell I think people would understand the problem an change the reviews ive seen praising this anime more if the genders were reversed...which is sad
RahXephon was Eva done right. it was actually superior to the thing it was considered a ripoff of...
And it was also animated by Bones
Oh Gene Starwind... why are you in this?
As many other says, If you did a review to the animes which are pretty simillar like Neon Genesis Evanghelion or De:Vaddasy, why don't you do also a review to the RahXephon anime which you mentioned earlier in this video?RahXephon deserves better to have a review instead of this goddamn shittest possible anime ever existed!
