    For a small to medium sized living room with 8 foot ceilings, this speaker system actually sounds really good for the budget minded individual. I am using an Onkyo TX-NR7100 and have calibrated the speakers in their positions using DIRAC. It is pleasantly surprising. Got my receiver new from Amazon for $893 and the speakers for $350. After taxes and shipping ( shipping was free on Amazon Prime), I only spent $1,350.00 for all of it. Watching Dolby Atmos and DTS-X content with the correct speaker configuration in the Onkyo along with DIRAC calibration has provided a noticeable upgrade to my previous 7.1 Surround Sound System. Sound is much more ambient with a greater depth in the sound stage from the music sound track to the movie sound affects. Frequency response is more then satisfactory for the price I paid.

    Hello Ealan,
    Your channel and reviews are so much helpful! I have recently subscribed to your channel.
    Today I bought Klipsch reference cinema 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos speakers to upgrade from my current Monoprice premium 5.1 speakers.
    Currently, I have Pioneer 5.1 receiver which has 140w output, and I am not planning to upgrade my receiver any time soon. However, I am not sure if my receiver is a good fit for Klipsch speakers since it has 50w/75w RSM power handling. Just wondering if my receiver could damage my new Klipsch speakers in any way.
    Please advise.
    Thank you very much in advance!

      Not at all! 🙌 Having too much power is a good thing, since that means it will have more headroom to work with. Under powering your speakers is more damaging, actually. But with your Pioneer AVR, just don’t turn it up TOO loud and you’ll be fine. 😄🤘

    Your channel is not just very informative but also very funny to watch. You really cover all angles and make if very easy for a beginner to understand. I'm about to upgrade from a soundbar to a Klipsch speakers system and you have helped a lot. Are the av receivers that you mention (denon, Sony, Onkyo, etc) the same as a "network" receiver? I also want to have a sound system around my house to play music and not sure if the home theater system is enough or if I need something else like an stereo receiver with wi-fi as I also want to use my speakers for parties, etc and not just movies. Thank you very much for being awesome Ealan.

      Thanks! And yeah! Even though a 7 channel receiver doesn’t utilize all 4 upward firing speakers, the jump in cost from a 7 to 9 channel receiver is significant! But the 5 main ear-level speakers and subwoofer are still a great value for what you pay, so I’m not opposed to doing a 5.1.2 system on the TSR-700. It’ll still sound great for a bargain. 🤘

    Just the right speakers for the beginners, but I dont know if I am right but I guess when you setting the distance of the atmos speakers, you have to measure the distance from you speakers to ceiling to your ears, but you had put the straight distance when setting up, correct me if I am wrong..

      I have a nice Atlantic Technology THX Certified 5.1 system, but the Klipsch cinema 5.1.4 package intrigued me as does Atmos so I too went for the Newegg deal. My sub died on my 5.1 system, so for the price of a sub I got a 5.1.4 Klipsch speaker package. Was thinking about getting the Denon 760 at Costco (on sale for $379!) but am leaning towards the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX305 9.2 channel AVR. Seems like Pioneer has HDMI 2.1 figured out (unlike Denon and Yamaha which are buggy at best from everything I've read) plus it's 9 channels for the full Atmos experience. Could also add a second sub I for 5.2.4 suppose :) Any benefit to different sized subs?

  • @wells2671
    @wells2671 2 года назад +13

    good chance that the atmos experience wasn't up to par because you skipped the accuEQ setup. Based on the screenshot you shared, the Heights were only set 1ft further than the mains, so the atmost speaker to ceiling distance was not added which would create a different delay for them if they were. As Andrew Jones suggested with his atmos enabled speakers, once you run the auto EQ and finalize the distances/delays, you should add 1 to 3dB to the atmos speakers since they will lose some energy from having to bounce the sound off the ceiling. I run a 7.4.4 set up with the Andrew Jones Pioneer Elite speakers that have the atmos enable speakers built-in (like these Klipsch in your review), and the atmos effect is very convincing. My buddy just picked up this Klipsch system and will be using the Onkyo TX-NR7100. His room is not optimal since one wall opens up to another room, but it should be descent once he calibrates it.

    Hello @Ealan,
    Hope you are doing well!
    I am happy to let you know that I recently upgraded my AVR to Denon AVR X4700H so that I can get the full benefit of the Dolby Atmos sound system with my new Klipsch Reference Cinema 5.1.4 speakers.
    I have a few questions though, can I use my old Monoprice satellite speakers as the height speakers and Klipsch speakers as floor speakers?
    The reason I am asking is that I feel the upward-firing speakers of the Klipsch system are not powerful enough, so I am wondering if using Monoprice satellite speakers as height speakers would give a better Dolby Atmos effect compared to Klipsch upward-firing speakers?
    Also, can I use Klipsch and Monoprice subwoofers together? Trying to see if I can have a 5.2.4 speaker setup.
    Is it safe to mix and match Klipsch speakers/subwoofer with Monoprice speakers/subwoofer on a single Denon AVR?
    Please advise.
    Highly appreciate your guidance!

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Год назад +1

      You absolutely can do that! Most of the height effects are atmospheric and fairly subtle anyway, so mounting your Monoprice satellites up high will work much better than the upward-firing Klipsch speakers. And you can most certainly use the Klipsch and Monoprice subs together. Just make sure and level match them so one doesn’t overpower the other. But 2 subwoofers is always better than 1. 😁🤘

    I wanted the Klipsch 5.1, and had been shopping for a good deal on them lately. BUT when I found that I could pick up the Klipsch 5.1.4 for $299, I jumped on it and bought it immediately; just recently. I also bought the Onkyo AVR6100 to go along with it for $279. However, I have yet to set up the system; my movie room needs a bit of remodeling first. Then I need a new widescreen monitor for the completion. As this will replace my old Panasonic SX-316 avr, I am certain that my new system will be far better than I had previously. Since my room is small; roughly 12'W x 13'L, and it is a shared common wall with a neighbor, I'll have to dial the sound levels down, especially the bass. I believe for the money, I got a pretty good deal, and I am absolutely sure it will offer me far more value for my budget to meet my expectations fully. I know there are a lot of avr and speaker options available; many far more expensive and far more than what I need. But I think I got the best value for what I need in a home entertainment system.

      The Yamaha RX-A870 is a 7 channel receiver, but you don’t need to power the Klipsch Cinema System with external amps. The Cinema system is still considered “budget,” so a receiver like the A870 should provide plenty of power to those speakers.
      If and when you decide to get larger or more powerful speakers in the future, that’s when you might want to also invest in external amps, since the A870 is one of the last 7 channel receivers sold that supports Dolby Atmos AND has a full set of pre outs to use external amps. 👍

    Hello 2 questions, you are the first to actually have good information. I couldnt find anywhere what since receiver i needed with this system. So it has to be at least a channel receiver? Also what would happen if i dont connect the height wires? Is that possible i already have wires running but only 1 set of wires. Also can i mount the speakers higher up on a 10ft wall?? Thanks

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  2 года назад

      Yes, you would need a 9 channel receiver to utilize ALL 9 speakers. But you could get away with a 7 channel receiver and use just 2 of the upward firing speakers, since 9 channel receivers are much more expensive.
      And you could definitely just use the main speakers and not even connect the heights speakers. Mix and match all you want. 😁 And mounting is also an option. Preferably mounted on either side of your TV, but even a little higher if you want. Whatever works for your space and sounds best to your ears. 😁🤘

    Hi there! I just bought a Denon AVR-S760H receiver and the Klipsch HT50 Home Theater Surround Sound 5.0 System, but ended up returning that open box speaker set because it was missing the rubber feet for the stands. That said, would this setup be better than the HT50 setup? I can't believe this is selling on Amazon right now for $429.99! I currently have a set of 4 Bose Model 141 speakers, 2 Onkyo Model SKF-100's, a Bose video speaker as my center channel (only a single speaker though, not a real center speaker), and an 8" Onkyo sub. I have vaulted ceilings where my tv is, so I thought about the 5.1 theater set, but this Atmos set has a bigger sub and the other speakers are larger too. My receiver is only a 7.2, but would this system be good for me regardless? Thanks in advance!

    • @ealanosborne

      Yes! Since the speakers are larger than any online photo can capture, they would work well with your situation…at least if running a 5.1 (or 7.1, if you decide to use a pair of your current speakers). Since you have vaulted ceilings, the up-firing Atmos speakers won’t do anything at all, so I’d keep it at 5.1 or 7.1. But I agree! It’s one of the best complete systems you can get for the price! 🤘

      I would say most of what Klipsch offers is a downgrade being run and powered by McIntosh components. The particular Klipsch system is part of their lowest tier Reference line, so it’s a great bargain for those just starting to get into home theater who run their system with an all-in-one AV receiver.
      I know McIntosh speakers are also ridiculously expensive, so it’d be tough to get a complete system that way. But I’d maybe look into SVS’s new Ultra Evolution speakers or Aperion Audio’s Verus line if you take advantage of McIntosh’s HiFi stereo prowess along with a nice home theater setup. Or perhaps KEF, Focal, or Bowers & Wilkins speakers if your budget allows for it, TBH. 👍

    • @ealanosborne

      Setting the knob to LFE means it’ll be up to the AVR to send low frequency effects to the sub with movies and TV shows (which typically has a crossover of 120 Hz automatically). So you could set the knob to 100 Hz also, to match your mains. Typically you would set the crossover on the sub when listening to both movies and music on your system quite often. Otherwise, just leave it on LFE if it’s mainly movies and TV you’ll be using your system for. 👍

      Not completely. Those receivers are 7 channel, and to fully utilize all 4 of the upward firing Atmos speakers, you’d need a 9 channel receiver. But they are so much more expensive than 7 channel receivers.
      But in my video, I explain that you could still get away with an s760h or tsr-700 because the 5 main speakers in the system (and subwoofer) still sound great for the price. But you’d max out at only using 2 of the 4 upward firing speakers. But 2 is better than none! 😁🤘

I am having a pioneer lx305 9 channel AVR. The 5 main speakers in this bundle are a great value. But the upward firing Atmos speakers are just okay. And with 10 foot ceilings, you’re honestly not going to get a noticeable Atmos experience. 😕
      If your Polk speakers are too boomy, they might be too close to a wall. Or perhaps you can try to change the EQ of certain speakers by reducing the frequencies 120 Hz and below by about 3 dB to start, and experiment further, having the subwoofer take care of the low end. 🤷‍♂️

      @@menacordero1 Well, since you have yet to own a receiver, I’d assess what your home theater goals are. Are you wanting to have a nice budget system that will last you for years to come? Or are you thinking you’ll want to dive into home theater now as an investment? Like you’ll want to upgrade speakers and receivers piece by piece as the years go by?
      Getting the Denon receiver at Costco would be a great way to get a solid baseline system without breaking the bank. It can support 8K video and has HDMI 2.1, so it is set up nicely for future tech that will roll out.
      Getting the Denon x3700h, for example, would allow to utilize all 9 channels with this Klipsch Cinema system, but it’s also more of a long term investment. That’s due to the fact that it has a full set of pre outs on the back. That allows for the use of external amps to power your speakers. The Cinema system does NOT need external amps to power them. That might damage them. BUT…if and when you decide to get bigger, better speakers in the future, powered by external amps, the x3700h will be able to accommodate those upgrades without having to buy another receiver.
      Make sense? The 7 channel Denon is a great short term investment. The x3700h is a great long term investment. 😁🤘

      Usually if you have a choice between front or rear height speakers, you’ll want to try front first. But depending on how your home theater space is set up (or how large it is, furniture, etc) rear upward firing might be better? So I’d experiment with both just to be sure. 👍

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Год назад +1

      There are no silly questions here! 😁 The first number refers to the number of ear-level speakers. The second number is how many subwoofers the system has. And the third number refers to the amount of height speakers. So this system has 5 ear level speakers, 1 subwoofer, and 4 upward firing height speakers (the kind that bounce audio off your ceiling). But that doesn’t mean you HAVE to utilize all the speakers. You could still save money by getting a 5.2 channel receiver and just connect the 5 main satellite speakers and subwoofer.
      To utilize ALL the speakers in this system, you’d need a 9 channel AVR. But again - to stay on a budget - you could get by with a 7 channel AVR and just use 2 out of the 4 upward firing height speakers.
      Denon X2700H or Sony AZ1000ES would push it to the limit. But if you don’t wanna spend that much, the Onkyo 6100, Denon S760H or Sony DN1080 are less expensive options that are still solid. 🤘

I installed this speaker system in my office, which is just a small bedroom, with a Pioneer Elite VSX-LX505. I initially just used basic measurements and settings while setting up the system and it sounded pretty darn good. I then used Pioneers own mcacc to setup the system and didn't really notice much of a difference. I will note though, as you have stated, I was getting a lot of chuffing from the subwoofer. I went into the sub settings and set it to zero and controlled the volume directly from the sub and it sounded much better, no chuffing! I then decided to give Dirac a try and this is where I am floored. Holy crap batman, It really is a night and day difference from everything I tried with this system to this point. The soundstage is just amazing, really pulls you into whatever your watching, sounds very "spacious". My point is that, over the years owning many different AVR's, is that you can have nice equipment but if isn't setup correctly it will still sound like poo. Get in there and tweek tweek tweek, utilize everything the AVR is capable of doing, don't just rely on the AVR's tuning program. Get out a tape measure and mess with all the settings till you get it right. You will be more satisfied with the end results for sure. Tune it to sound like you want it to. Whichever gets the better effect in your home theater space. 👍
      But honestly, since you already have speakers, I’d suggest using 2 of your existing speakers and mounting them on the wall above the TV, on the ceiling, or even behind up high, pointing them down at your listening position. The ear-level Klipsch cinema speakers are fantastic! So using 2 existing speakers for Atmos would actually be the optimal 5.1.2 setup for now.

      I did touch on the fact that these cinema speakers have a lower frequency response limit, so they produce a bit more body and impact in the mid-range and mid-bass range than the tiny 3.5" woofers of the 5.1 Pack. It makes it sound bigger, more cinematic. The 5.1 pack speakers are a tad brighter in the high frequencies, which makes it seem like it's trying a little harder to be loud.
      Your TX-SR373 would be great for the 5.1 pack since it's 80 W/channel into 8 Ohms. The 393 isn't much different, other than the fact that it's newer and can process a 3.2.2 Dolby Atmos setup, which only some consumers will care about.
      I used the same Onkyo TX-NR787 for both tests, with the Cinema System utilizing all 9 channels, and the 5.1 pack only utilizing 5.

Me wants the full 21.4.10 Atmos. Hell I'd even grab up the thing to make it 48 channals. Lol. But yeah bruh if we are talking just basic home Atmos then we'd have talk at least the RZ 50. But back to the topic at hand. Thanks again for the info. Yeah I forget what else the 393 could do that the 373 can't. But I did read it's page. But again at the time I was more interested on the 3300 $ 3100 AVR that built in can do 7.1.4 Atmos like the RZ 50 but the thing is the RZ 50 needs an extra amp or something. The I think it's also an RZ 3100 could do it all built in. Any who thanks for the info. I never thought to use any of the harry potter films for demos. For brightness I use Godzilla 1998. I use the fish eating seen for the roar it does at nick before hitting him in the chest. That roar as a fun fact is what the 98 Zilla toys called the Tornado blast roar. If you have watched the movie like it or hate it just so you know the exact tornado blast Trend Masters used is the 1 Zilla does whilst hugging the Empire State building. It's the second roar.

    I used regular banana plugs on the receiver side and then got flex pin banana plugs for the speaker side and it worked great!

    What receiver do you recommend using with these speakers for optimum performance?

      Optimum performance, Onkyo TX-NR7100 since it’s a 9 channel receiver without pre outs, so it’s one of the least expensive ones out there currently (if you can catch it in stock, though). Otherwise, the Denon x3700h and Onkyo RZ50 are the next least expensive, even though they’re not cheap 😬

    First, thanks for the great review. Using the crossover settings you had indicated they (5.1.2 setup) sounded great without even doing any calibration. Wall mount instructions for these speakers indicate a minimum of 6" clearance from the wall. Given these are fully enclosed speakers without any holes in the back, do they really need 6" clearance? The wall mount brackets I am considering provide only about 3.2" to 3.5" clearance.

      Thanks for your kind words! And yeah, since these have dual front-facing bass ports, that "6" from the wall" rule (I think) can be adjusted a bit. I think you could still get away with a 3.5" clearance.
