Thanks for the update, Alison! I hadn't heard anything regarding this space since it was meant to be a Google campus. I'm glad it will not go to waste.
To me, it's so sad that mall life no longer flourishes. Prior to the internet, the mall was the hub for young people all over to socialize, have fun, have a meal, etc. If video killed the radio star, the internet killed youthful socialization.
Spot on! You are right. I'm lucky I got to grow up in the 70s and 80s. I couldn't imagine growing up today. I enjoy a lot of the technological wonders we have like the internet, but I admit it's pretty much the thing that crushed normal childhood forever.
I felt a pang of sadness seeing the theatres empty like that, but I'm glad to know some will be used for performance space in future, and the building won't be torn down. It was a favourite place to see movies and the mall was also a relaxing, but vibrant, place to shop. The new development sounds like a worthwhile repurposing, so thanks for the update. Loved the old photos!
remember the strawberry banana shakes next to the movie theater ... wp had the outside part of the mall before it was a thing. California great steak in the food court...the pavilion market in the parking structure ....suncoast vid... pacific sunwear ...
The outside section (Westside Too) was added on in 1991. It never caught on and was converted to the theatres around 2006. I remember driving right on top of that section and it felt like you were gonna fall right off the roof!
Absolutely fascinating! Thank you for the video. What a beautiful structure! I will hope to visit it next trip to LA!
Oneof my last times there I saw UP! Great to see it "live" again!

It's the negative effects of globalization greed, it destroys heritage, culture and community wherever it goes. Screw screen slavery.

Such an interesting story and a bright future. Uplifting.
Glad it lives on w/ great purpose! I bought "hip" clothes there in the mid 80s.

I do really miss the Asian buffet that was there. I only found out that it was closed when I went to go to one of my favorite local eateries.
