This group and this man ..John Wetton..has coloured my music for the last 30 years, and I must say..I didn`t waste my time!! The soundtrack of my life!!
Frank: I will ditto your statement! John Wetton has always been an unsung hero in my catalog of music greats since his days with Roxy, King Crimson, and U.K. I always thought his debut solo album 'Caught in the Crossfire' in 1980 went nearly completely unnoticed and it is a fine album with many star session players performing.
I find it a beautiful coincidence that Gravitas, John's last album with Asia, featured a similar dragon as their first album, a closing of a circle. He died a week ago and it feels like a personal loss, like a dear relative we haven't seen since childhood. I never met him (he waved at me at a concert in 2010) but he was not nobody to me either; he sang me through high school, army days, college and up until now. God bless you, brother. I wonder what melodies were waiting for you on the other side!
Dear John Wetton, you are my brother from another mother, this is music for my soul... Excellent and exceptionally are just modest words, just words... I am sure that God and all the angels are humming now with you...
RIP John Wetton.- Nadie Muere el Alma es Eterna, y Vos nos llenaste de Energía y Alegría. ahh y nos estimulaste para no entregarnos en el día a día. Gracias Por Tanto!!
Asia has always sparked my imagination. Will get to meet you one day, John Wetton. And I will say "Thank you, brother". The fantastic lands that grace Asia's album covers are incomparable to the lands you now walk.
I have always preferred the albums and songs with the original Asia line up with a few exceptions of course and now there will be no more original line up.😭 RIP John I just wish he could see all of the support and RIP coments
I enjoyed this more than I'd hoped. The Heat of the Moment we all experienced 30 years ago can never return exactly. But damn, this is a good album. RIP John Wetton
Asia - Gravitas - -From Wikipedia - -Gravitas is the thirteenth studio album by British rock group Asia, released in 2014. It is the group's final studio album with vocalist/bassist John Wetton before his death in 2017 and the only one to feature guitarist Sam Coulson. Gravitas was released on CD, deluxe edition CD/DVD-Video (featuring bonus tracks, the "Valkyrie" music video, the making of the album and three tracks recorded live with a full symphonic orchestra in Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and LP. A music video for "Valkyrie" was shot in January 2014 in Los Angeles. Production Asia began to work on the new album in the end of June 2013. As this time they decided not to invite an outside producer, it was produced by Wetton and keyboard player Geoff Downes. The instruments were recorded at Steve Rispin's Liscombe Park Studios, located in Buckinghamshire countryside west of Bedfordshire town Leighton Buzzard, where the group had worked on all their previous studio recordings since the reunion in 2006. The vocals were done at Aubitt Studios in Southampton, Hampshire, by Rob Aubrey. The album was mixed and mastered by John Mitchell at Outhouse Studios in Reading, Berkshire, from October to December 2013. "I Would Die for You" was written by Wetton and Downes in 1986 as opposed to the rest of the songs, which were composed in 2013. Gravitas was originally announced under the name of Valkyrie,[3] but the title was later changed. The cover artwork was designed by Roger Dean, who had collaborated with Asia since their debut album, released in 1982. Reception Matt Collar gave the album a rating of three stars out of five on AllMusic. He noted that "Asia have always moved back and forth between their radio-friendly pop side and more classical-influenced progressive side" and Gravitas "bends more toward the latter, showcasing Downes and Wetton's longstanding partnership as thoughtful songwriters and technically proficient arrangers". "Valkyrie", "Nyctophobia" and "I Would Die for You" were selected as three "Track Picks". Gravitas was less successful in terms of sales than its predecessor, but still managed to reach the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200. My husband was John Wetton. He was ASIA’s singer/bassist. He struggled for 2 years to survive cancer. It was awful. He was everything to me. And this album keeps me going every day. I’m sorry you think ASIA is dreadful. Now piss off.
Thank you for posting!, Sure I'm not 18 anymore, and" Gravitas" is definitely not their first album , even This kind of music isn't the kind of music I usually listening now. but I like this album, they're honest to themselves... maybe is because we all getting old, so don't have to pretend anymore. None of my friend like Asia, but I like them, some works good, some bad. but that's life. Go! Asia! :)
What a great album. Strong Asia sound, after listening to it a few times.. Sam Coulson does a really good job filling in here, and has a presence on the album. good sound. top 5 best asia albums.
I personally prefer the albums featuring John Payne, but original Asia can't be underrated, and in my opinion Astra and Gravitas are the most remarkable albums which Wetton and Downes composed. In fact, nowadays I'm still diggin' this record. By the way, Sam Coulson is a terrific guitarist and Wetton was an exceptional singer, his voice never aged. I never get tired of listening the intro to "Heaven help me now". Heavenly music.
Yes you're right. That album is a piece of art. I couldn't choose between "Battle lines" and "Arkangel", I think they're his two stronger solo releases. My faves are the tittle track and "Right Where I Wanted To Be", very catchy tune with bits of gorgeous electric guitar..
Alpha was their best Album, when I first heard it in 1983, I thought that it was a Greatest hits Album, found out days later that it was their Second Album, Amazing.
Excellent album. Gravitas is a very well done piece. If you want early Asia these guys can play it as well now as when they started. Why do fans want bands to stay the same and never change? That's called boring. I saw them right after this album and they were as good as ever, and I've seen them many times. But John Payne Asia is not Asia by any stretch.
Roger Dean was in talks to sue Cameron over the use of the floating mountains, which they obviously borrowed the idea from him. Unfortunately, nothing came of it. I wish they'd had at least made him an artistic consultant for the Avatar sequels.

Does anyone else feel like this was a good bye album on John's part. if you listen with that kind of impression a lot of these songs sound like they were written with the intention of being his last songs.
alot of the complaints about new vs old people don't realize that we have lost so much because of the digital era not gained. SO much music today is so flat and loses that "forcefullness" for lack of a better term because it's done on something like protools and not tape like the old days and they're also not in room playing together. Just something about the computer age where the music has lost that edge......good for electronic music and THAT style, but pop and rock have lost that edge and emotion tape gave.
you can thank digital technology for making music sound worse than it already does but the same can also be said for analog...however, it's very hard to tell when something is digitally vs analog recorded...it really is...the only way a person IS going to know when the music sucks is when it is judged by somebody who knows how to listen to the flaws in the recording process...I don't think it really matters if the music is recorded digitally or thru analog or a combination of the both but come on, you can do a lot w/ digital vs analog or both and the music will not suffer unless you really don't know what the heck you are doing w/ the equipment...it all comes down to the equipment and how well you know what you are using and that takes time and patience to understand...
Maybe that's why I'm just as satisfied to listen to RUclips here as to bother putting on a CD I paid for. When I was first introduced to Asia, in 1982 or 1983, the very first album I heard was played for me from a Japanese premium vinyl edition of some kind. Yes, it blew me out of the water! Incredible! I don't know enough about it, but I took the person's word on it, that particular vinyl edition was superior to anything else except being in the middle of the band. I'm old enough now I can't hear well in the middle range, and maybe better quality would be wasted on me now.
Genre: hardrock ??? This is of course miles away of hardrock, and it isn't that progressive anymore as it used to be. Is good, decent AOR, even if this album remains quite below the expectations. I'm more or less slightly getting used to the introduction song, which is not the same as saying I like it. The poor quality of the video clip that went along with it didn't help at all. Gravitas (without the long intro) and especially Heaven help me now, I would die for you and Nyctophobia are enjoyable, but the complete output isn't what it should be. Don't put the blame on the new guitar player, he's doing an OK job, it has rather to do with the decline of the quality of the songs. It also starts to sound too often as déjà entendu... In the meantime still no news of the album Asia feat. John Payne announced some years ago apparantly.... OK, I gave it the thumbs up, but not with the same enthousiasm as with the previous albums since the return of Wetton. But with the clear message, next time better songs please !
Having listened now about 200 times to this CD, I admit it begins to make more and more sense. The melodies took me more time to appreciate than those on the previous CD's for one or another obscure reason. By now I've listened several times to each instrument separately too, and for sure, the contributions of the new guitarist are quite good. No idea whether he invented the solo's himself or whether Wetton & co just pushed him a sheet music under the nose, voilà, but it are fine solo's for sure. So I've upgraded my total score for this CD from 7/10 last year to 8/10, some songs reaching an 8,5/10.
First wring that mastic out of your ears - did no one tell you you're not supposed to store it there - and than listen again. It contains ballads for sure, but they"re all but boring. They might not be top notch, but Gravitas certainly rocks and Nyctophobia too has plenty of merits. The rest may be less good than the previous records, but they're no dried horseshit either.
Hearing this album, sadness comes over me, one of the best musicians of all times...
This group and this man ..John Wetton..has coloured my music for the last 30 years, and I must say..I didn`t waste my time!! The soundtrack of my life!!
I wish I knew more people who feel this way about this music.
Frank: I will ditto your statement! John Wetton has always been an unsung hero in my catalog of music greats since his days with Roxy, King Crimson, and U.K. I always thought his debut solo album 'Caught in the Crossfire' in 1980 went nearly completely unnoticed and it is a fine album with many star session players performing.
had the pleasure to meet the man many times after gigs .really feel we have lost a wonderful voice so full of tones and textures RIP john .
Without You. The deep noble voice of ASIA has passed. RIP John Wetton.
I find it a beautiful coincidence that Gravitas, John's last album with Asia, featured a similar dragon as their first album, a closing of a circle. He died a week ago and it feels like a personal loss, like a dear relative we haven't seen since childhood. Very elaborate, wonderful, unique music. Thank you, ASIA. RIP, John Wetton.

Asia has always sparked my imagination. Will get to meet you one day, John Wetton. And I will say "Thank you, brother". The fantastic lands that grace Asia's album covers are incomparable to the lands you now walk.
True to Asia style... the music makes you feel in a big place, like a beach with perfectly blue sky
I grew up listning to their music because my dad loves it
RIP John Wetton...
I have always preferred the albums and songs with the original Asia line up with a few exceptions of course and now there will be no more original line up.😭 RIP John I just wish he could see all of the support and RIP coments
What the heck is wrong with you people ,this is a fantastic album in true classic Asia form ,I absolutely love this album .
I enjoyed this more than I'd hoped. The Heat of the Moment we all experienced 30 years ago can never return exactly. But damn, this is a good album. RIP John Wetton

Thank for you music
a great guy, a wonderfull person. R.I.P.
This album is gorgeous...deep with tracks that are all hit-worthy. It cant be compared to most of the shite these days.
Dharmadevil hahaha, asia is dreadful.
are u crazy?
The whole album is good, particularly the first two tracks. Not a bad song on the album. Song 3 drags a bit but that's about it.

UK, King Crimson and Asia et al. John Wetton lives on in music. RIP
Heard the sad news earlier today - RIP John Wetton.

Wow. Can't believe I've kept putting off listening to this band. I'm hooked. Asia fans, what are the essential albums in your opinion?
I just heard about John Wetton! Heartbroken!
It's more progressive, and minus pop. Greats harmonies and melodies. The best album. WONDERFUL.
I personally prefer the albums featuring John Payne, but original Asia can't be underrated, and in my opinion Astra and Gravitas are the most remarkable albums which Wetton and Downes composed. I have "Voice Mail" album, which must be the same as Battle Line?
Considering that it has been a long time, this was good. Now it is the last Asia album forever with John Wetton since he just passed away.
JW + GD id some writing last year and GD has said he hopes to record it at some time in the future.
Great music,great artists,Wetton gone,my life gone...
Big Asia fan there music is like art.
I belive this is not one of the best of Asia. but... it´s ASIA. shut up and take my money.
best by/ for who ?
Great Album!!!!

if you listen to this album enough you will understand the man JW
really dig the title track. as great as anything Asia has ever done -- and they sound like they're all 30 again. ;-)
Отличный альбом! Как-то раньше слышал его...а жаль!
beautiful álbum
RIP John Wetton !!
Excelente trabajo de estudio, aunque tal vez Asia y Alpha nos siga gustando más...
The album cover reminds me of a scene from the movie 'Avatar' - floating forests and a dragon. Nice stuff, good music.
If you look at old Yes albums, you'll find out where the "Setdesigner" at Avatar got his ideas from - pure rip-off. (ok movie imo)
That's true. Roger Dean designed the album covers, didn't he.
Roger Dean was in talks to sue Cameron over the use of the floating mountains, which they obviously borrowed the idea from him. Unfortunately, nothing came of it. I wish they'd had at least made him an artistic consultant for the Avatar sequels.
Well said!
David Cameron is the ex-prime minister of Britain. I think you mean James Cameron.
excellent.
I love John
Thank you:)
Solo te adelantaste. Si Dios así lo desea nos vemos pronto!!
Жаль старину Джона Уэттона. Благородный голос. I'm said... John Wetton...
ohuennaia muzika!!
O começo da música gravitas lembra muito a musica final do filme heartsdragon
What does the lady say at the end of VALKYRIE song?
NK - KN I don't think anyone here will be able to tell you it is to quite in comparison to the music and frankly the last bit you can kinda here sounds like a different language.
Cedrick Newsom - True. Despite it being in another language, it sounds quite sad. But thanks anyway.
I am downloading the audio file and will mess with the EQ and try and figure it out different language or not now you got me curious
Cedrick Newsom - Ya, I've always wondered what was being said and your 'curiosity' has certainly made me smile. T/C.
She says something like "Due to a strike of the luggage handlers, all voyagers will have to carry their own luggage. The taxidrivers and pilots too are on strike, so unfortunately we're not sure what to recommend you. By the way, tomorrow, the announcers too are on strike." :)))
R.I.P John WETTON
R.I.P. John Wetton. This is sad news (:
rock progressive quality
I bought this, but it is so much more convenient to come here than to mess with folders, files, or CDs....
I'm really sad about John Wetton, Glenn Yarbrough, Karen Carpenter...some losses are timeless....
good
Does anyone else feel like this was a good bye album on John's part. if you listen with that kind of impression a lot of these songs sound like they were written with the intention of being his last songs.
Like Valkyrie. A valkyrie is a maiden of Valhalla sent to the battle field to ferry the souls of the dead to Valhalla.
Idon' t agree, i think 30 years later the disc is also pleasant to
listen to the firsts that rare in general the bands often lose
alot of the complaints about new vs old people don't realize that we have lost so much because of the digital era not gained. i disagree...
ho hum ... boring ballad after boring ballad ... why did they even bother making this record?
Gerry Kay - Why listen then? No one is compelling you to do so....
I gave it a test drive ... I like the first 2 albums.
Ha Again, I say the same thing, the first two Albums were the best.
