    I Loved this, the only thing that upset me was how awkward I felt Judd and yourself were when you had to tell the person that Harlow was working and that they couldn’t pet her, You shouldn’t have to feel awkward or scared for someone’s response, but I would feel exactly the same I feel I’d be really scared about others reactions to me simply saying that my dog was working. I hope soon enough it becomes common knowledge to not even ask unless Harlow is out on her play walks etc but I guess she is a gorgeous dog and people can’t resist. Well done for both standing your ground xx

      I cannot understand how anyone can look at a CLEARLY marked service animal, that's wearing a vest that says "Do Not Pet" "Working", absolute TOTAL strangers, and ask if they can pet anyway! What the?!?!?!?!?

    • @katiestanina813
      @katiestanina813 5 лет назад +7

      I felt like it was awkward too.

    • @kirstencourtney8792

      I felt it was extra awkward because she also interrupted Jaquie while she was vlogging about the poutine. I felt this when she was just asking Harlow's name. I didn't hear her ask to pet Harlow but assume that's the reason they said "she's working." But I sensed the tension before that because of the interruption. That's just kinda rude in general, like walking in front of someone you know is taking a picture of something or even just interrupting someone who is talking. I've noticed it gets worse as people age, they just seem more oblivious, but maybe that's just my experience.

    • @Miracle4missing
      @Miracle4missing 5 лет назад +7

      Kirsten Courtney yes, that’s exactly when I noticed it, so rude interrupting someone’s lunch with their husband for their own wants..

      I feel it is okay to ask to pet dogs but if owners say no to respect that and keep going about your day. I’ve always grown up with dogs and I’ve worked and boarding for the past two years. Going away for college and not being around dogs like I used to has been awful. I will always ask to pet someone’s dog even if I can tell (due to my professional handling skills) that dog is very friendly and has already come up to me looking for pets. If a dog is working they have a job to do and the tasks the perform could be the difference between life and death. If a dog needs to not be distracted while working that’s okay. It’s really at the handler’s discretion.

    This reminds me of a service dog in my area. I was a volunteer at a petting zoo and they would visit to get the pup used to all the other animals and the extreemly loud kids. It was so cool to see the progres that she made after a while!

    I've been training my service dog for about 9 months now. He's easily distracted but we are slowly doing better. Even though I know training a service dog takes time and they do have some behavior problems your story about Harlow and the fountain makes me feel better. Gives me more motivation to continue the hard work so we keep making progress.

    When people ask harlows name you should give them a fake name, that way if they say the fake name, there no chance of her responding

  • @kirstencourtney8792

    I just got this idea about a "thumbs up 👍/ paws up 🐾" movement. It would go kind of like this: along with teaching about service dog etiquette to the general public, instead of just teaching/ saying "do not pet, the dog is working", add this with it: "If you see a lovely, irresistible service dog doing an excellent job working and you feel an irresistible urge to compliment, ask questions, or pet it anyway, take a "paws" (pause) and give it/ it's owner a quiet "thumbs up" instead. Remember this team is working yet probably still got stopped for questionong 20 times before you came along, and maybe even petted against their will. Please join the movement to just give a thumbs up instead.
    People could even make t-shirts and brochures/ cards about the movement to help get it going. They could say "Take a (pause) 🐾 for service dogs and give a (thumbs up) 👍instead" or something like that.
    This would give people a chance to express themselves in a non-verbal way and also something to do with their hand besides pet. Maybe it would help reinforce the idea so it sticks in the brain better.
    Of course there will still be ignorant or hard headed/ rebellious people, but at least it might help somewhat reduce them. Just an idea.

      When I see a service dog team, I just say- to the HANDLER, not the dog- "Oh, you have a gorgeous/beautiful/etc. dog!" (whatever adjective pops out of my mouth at the time) and then go on my merry way. I definitely try to assess each situation. If the handler looks like they're having a hard time for whatever reason, if they're talking to someone else, etc, I don't bother because there's also nothing wrong with just admiring a dog from afar. I feel like if people just apply common logic when they see a service animal and their handler, things will go so much more smoothly. Unfortunately, you're right in that not everyone seems to understand :-/.

    My SD LOVESSSS to greet her friends when we go to meet ups. She only gets to see them about once every couple of months so it’s hard. I usually let her say a quick greeting before we start our day. Revisiting past issues and changing your approach is always a good idea! ♥️♥️♥️

    The cupcake wrapper reminded me of the time when me and my sister were probably around 4th grade and we were all sitting at the table after dinner. Our dogs were eating and my mom and sister were throwing a paper towel at each other. My sister turned and threw it at our golden who was still eating and she must of inhaled it bc we never did find it after that.

      Maybe try the "good boy, take it" game someone described in one of the commemts here. Maybe work up to
      sticking it on top of his nose and make him wait to "take it." If he gets to play this game every once in awhile and the game helps him learn not to beg, maybe that would help calm his craving? (If not, watch the video about Ryker the epic service dog failure someone posted. It's hilarious. You can at least be glad then that your dog doesn't pull the whole refrigerator out of the wall. 😂)

    How did Harlow do on elevator the first time? My SDIT is struggling with them. The first time he walked in no issue, but then it moved and he shut down and doesn’t want to go on them anymore. My goal is to take him to a place that has one that is not used often.

    • @MrBitiscaudalis
      @MrBitiscaudalis 5 лет назад +1

      My SDIT is not a big fan of elevators, but I have been having her lay down as soon as we get on them, and have to put her in a down sometimes while we go up and down. I just act like everything is normal and only praise her calm behavior. She's doing so much better than she was!

      Ashley Murray Hey, my Assistance dog trainer gave me a cool learning game to play. Hold a treat in your closed fist and wait as long as it takes for your dog to stop biting, slobbering and touching your hand then say “good boy, take it” and give him the treat. Make sure to wait three or more seconds before the good boy to make sure he has definitely stopped trying to get it. Once your dog has that down, get them to do the same with a treat on top of your flat, open hand. Close you fist if the dog tries taking it and then open when good behaviour is shown (sit or down is handy for making them think that this action will get them something like food or an open door). Again, once your desired behaviour is shown, tell them “good boy, take it”, “take it” is always used as the release key and “good boy” is used when they are doing well and you want to tell them that but you aren’t giving them the treat just yet. Make sure they understand that whatever they are told during the wait “take it” is the only command that will let them get the treat. This game can be used in so many ways with treats, toys, distractions, multiple treats, moving objects. It’s such a great idea and my dog picked it up super fast! Hope this helps!

      I get the feeling they don't like being interrupted at least, like most people, especially while filming.

    Judd, I used to be a person who had to clean those hand prints off doors ect. I still to this day don't understand why it's fun for people to do that. expain please.

    I guess this makes me the third person to comment. What's the big deal with that anyway?
    10:09 I guess he should know the punishment for a transgression like that. ;-)

      R.S. G if you were a service dog handler, you would understand. I cannot walk through a store with my service dog without being stopped at least 40 times to be asked about my dog. It’s very hard and it often can bother our dogs. Please take that into consideration.

      I don’t think she sounded horrible to the woman. They answered her questions politely and when she asked if she could pet Harlow she told her no because she’s working. Think of it this way, if someone came up and asked someone if they could touch/see/use their wheelchair, cane, walker, oxygen tank, an in-use asthma inhaler from a person or rather yet just snatched it from them would that would be incredibly dangerous. Harlow is a service dog, when she is out and with Jaquie and in work mode, she should not be distracted, that can mean Harlow may miss signs that Jaquie is having an allergic reaction, or any of the other tasks she does for her. There was an instance where someone distracted a working service dog and missed that her owner was about to pass out. She fell, hit her head, and received a traumatic brain injury. So politely saying “no she’s working” is not rude. Especially after answering her other questions. It can be a matter of life or death. Not only that but it is illegal to distract a working service dog. Harlow has plenty of time to play and relax and she is well fed and well loved as evidenced by their interactions in other videos. Hope this changes your perspective.

      R.S. G they weren’t rude, they politely explained that she was a working service dog that’s all. Jaquie even apologized. Judd is human too so he’s subject to feeling annoyed same as the rest of us

      I don't think they were horrible at all. I felt the annoyed expression was more because the lady was totally interrupting them, while talking/ filming as well. My mom has a bad habit of interrupting and then if I interrupt her back she gets annoyed and says she didn't. So sometimes I just give her the annoyed look and she realizes she interrupted and apologizes. Kind of weird I know, but my mom is sort of a talking addict or something. Anyways, I was getting those kind of vibes in this interaction, not just the whole service dog thing.
