Guys, the Daniel Weller is made with "Emmer Wheat" which is a strain of an old style Egyptian wheat grain that isn't common any more. It was mostly a bread / baking grain back centuries ago, and is in no way a standard ingredient. Like making a dish with Saffron, WAYYYYY expensive. But I agree...that $499 is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy outta my league.
The use of heritage grains is an interesting development in whiskey production. New Riff just released 2 bourbons made with heritage corn varieties that I was able to purchase and can't wait to try.
I have to wonder how available this will be, and if stores will jack up the price beyond $500. I'm always on the lookout for something unique, and $500 is a lot of money but not totally out of line for me, as long as it is a top quality and unique experience. I'm not going to hunt for it or anything else, but if I stumble upon it for $500 and I have extra money on hand, I might splurge on it. Heirloom corn is finding uses in many whiskies these days, and the prices can be very good. Mexico is a place worth watching. I've had a couple very interesting Mexican corn whiskies. Hopefully more will appear in the future - I think there is great potential in the indigenous corn varieties and traditional techniques for processing corn.
@@heatherharrison264 there’s a spot in Texas called IronRoot Republic that uses a bunch of different corn strains new and old to make really interesting stuff. Promethean is a really delicious product in my opinion
Great video! As a side note, proof in TTB filings is usually a placeholder and is default at 80 proof, so I bet the old overholt 10 year won’t be 80 proof!
Love your videos guys. I’m a Brit 🇬🇧 now living in the south, and have taken a big interest in Bourbon (funny as I don’t like Scotch or Irish Whiskey) and use you guys as my teachers / educators 😂 great week keep it up 💪
I'm a blue collar guy. Won't pay crazy money. I did hear 1924 might be coming out in July. But you're more in the know. Fingers crossed 🥃 Cheers and Happy Father's Day 🇺🇲
As a 25 yr old who is head over heels for whiskey, I love watching y’all’s channel and it helps to have someone in my age range to watch who’s as knowledgeable as I try to stay and always learning more, it just makes it feels less stuffy and makes me feel less uncomfortable in groups of whiskey drinkers. I can’t place why, but nonetheless I appreciate it, another great video fellas!
I seen an article talkin about it. I was hoping it would come around here. Had no idea it was $500 until the other night someone at a tasting was talkin about it. Hard pass for me at that price, even if could find it at msrp. Going to be more like $2000 if you actually see one cause secondary is crazy
Great Video gentleman. Noticed a great, subtle, happy/proud look from Father to Son @16:27 . I give my 4 year old the same look all the time. Currently my favourite whiskey is Seagrams 83 with ginger ale. Going to make my first educated purchase on a bottle of old forester 1910.
Not sure if someone already mentioned this, Trenton said the Sagamore Maple was finished for 2 months in Maple Barrels. It's actually 2 years. Huge difference
I'm shopping for more of the common man priced bourbons. Always willing to try some of the stuff that's out of my price range, if someone else offers it. My opinion thats been formed by doing so is that expensive buys aren't always the best, taste-wise. That be said, I don't do a lot of hunting, I just stay in my wheel house and be happy. It is interesting to hear about the top shelf stuff though. Great show guys!
Watching the releases of the Jack Daniels 10 and 12 year recently, I have no faith that the Old Forester 1924 10 year will be anything different in terms of availability and price, which means out of reach for most. Ideally it could join the rest of the Whiskey Row line between $50-60 but I don't see it going that way.
It would be a huge departure for JD to raise the price on their special releases. They have consistently been the most bang for the buck in special releases, in my opinion. Right now, I'm just keeping my eye open for the JD SiBBP Rye that is supposed to be an available bottle, haven't seen one in Colorado yet.
80% of these mentioned releases are not available on the shelf in Texas. None of them are worth Secondary prices, so I will just wait for y'all to review them and live vicariously through that experience.
If i can only get ONE bottle this Fall... is Thirteenth Colony Double Oaked (Batch #2)... i truly hope the rest of you are taking a nap on it, and there's literally cases of it when I get down to Georgia.
I am in Michigan Grand Rapids area , I went into bourbon street yesterday and they had buffalo trace , half gallons and fiths on the shelf , that is the first I have seen in quite some time
Love the video, I've heard the Old Overholt 10 yr CS proof is just a placeholder for now because they don't know what the actual proof will be until it's ready for bottling
I love to use a rye to make an Old Fashioned and the Sagamore Rye maple barrel finished sounds like it would be great for that. Hope to find a bottle or try a pour when it is released. I look forward to the reviews on some of these bottles when you get them.
Was finally able to get my hands on a ECBP A123 last week… it’s great! Got my hands on a B523 today… not so great lol. Very drying just like Trenton mentioned last week.
Learning so much from you guys..would you comment on how long a bottle is good if it is on the shelf for a while, and does it make a difference if it has been opened? Thank you. JC😊11:30 DST
The Hardin’s Creek Clermont has released at Total Wines around the Lexington and Louisville area. 190 after tax. Picked up a bottle and it’s as good if not better than the Jacob’s Well.
I’m not a rye fan but I have to agree that the Jack Daniels Single Barrel Rye is very good for a rye. The Old Forester 1924 is also on my list but yes, it won’t be out until 2024 for the 100 year anniversary. I’m also looking forward to the Jack Daniels 12 year and 10 year Batch 2. I was able to get a bottle of the limited release Jack Daniels 100% American Single Malt and it was fantastic.
I’d love a video on “ways to find allocated bourbons” just for us new people into this about how you guys have come across these bottles. Whether it is lotteries, knowing store owners, etc. Just to give people direction on how to go about finding allocated bottles
Best thing to do at the beginning is making friends with the people at your local liquor store. I've spent a good part of this last year talking with and getting to know a couple of the guys that work at mine and just two days ago when I walked in one of the guys went into the back and brought out a Little Book Chapter 7 and a Remus repeal Reserve IIV. I of course bought both, but it just takes getting to know them. Lotteries are another way and if you're willing to pay secondary pricing.
Cellar Aged Makers, OF 1924, 13th Colony DO …those are what I’m hunting until the end of the year. The KC 7yr Rye is Beam finally putting an age statement on all of KC’s products except the smoked maple
I was able to get the Hardins Creek Clermont in Louisville and it’s really solid. Price is $170 msrp. I think availability is limited but I heard people have randomly found it all over the country. I am looking to compare last year’s release with the release’s this year.
Definitely looking out for 2023-02 to keep the series continuing from 2021-01 when I started my whiskey journey (collecting) 🤣Definitely interested in the OF1924 as well. Sound delicious like all of the Whiskey Row line.
Great video guys. Charlie’s batch is pretty good, waiting on Apprentice but I haven’t heard good things about it. Waiting on Hard Truth wheated and 13th Colony DO. Cheers
2016 bookers was amazing. I use to buy a 1/5th every other day of it, not much actual tasting but it was $55 a fifth back then. Been kinda hard for me to buy another bottle of it, it was an amazing 55-60 dollar bottle, knowing that it’s hard to spend 100+ on it for me. And right there with ya on the weller. Lol looks amazing, love to try, but the price tag is probably why I hadn’t heard of it
Bookers, single barrel knob creek, any Four Roses barrel strength single barrels, Russell's 13, and Old Forester Single barrel rye is on my list. I'm not wasting time on tater releases.

Hoping to see the Sag Maple in my area. Sag prices are not overly crazy - never seen one passing $100. Aside from this one and Knob Creek 7, not looking for any of the other bottles because I can assure you they will be at least $299 in my area.
Jason at Mash & Drum just reviewed Booker's Apprentice. Swing and a big miss for him. I'm looking forward to the Maker's age-stated release, and also the Old Forester 1924 10-year.
Love the video like always. Here's an idea stolen from the Bourbon Junkies, build the best bang for your buck collection for $250 each and see who gets the better setup. Would like to see your guy's twist on this.
Don't hunt the new Weller. Buffalo trace needs to pay for that terrible idea. The crown apple 23 was a better idea. 500$ MSRP they need to humble themselves a bit jeez.
Thanks for doing the work for me about the Jack special release! It's an interesting idea, but I'm not a huge rye fan. I'm planning on getting a SBBP rye for the collection, so I'll see how I like that before deciding whether to hunt down that special release - although part of me thinks I will anyways just because I don't trust myself not to.

Makers Mark is hit or miss with me. I love the MM 101, and the FAE wood finishing bottles were excellent. "I'm a Wild Turkey kind of guy." That is an understatement of the year
TTB filings sometimes use placeholders for proof so I wouldn't necessarily count on the Old Overholt cask strength being 80 proof.

I am still trying to find that Widow Jane Decadence. Coincidentally enough, I am sipping Knob Creek Smoke Maple right now... the first maple-anything whiskey and holy cow... it is insane.
I am on the hunt for Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye Batch 007. I am about 35 minutes from the distillery and they're not thinking any of that batch is distributed in Indiana... so I am keeping my eyes open.
New camera or upgraded lighting?
Thanks for the great info. Go on with your bad self!
