    As I see it ACT is not about eliminating hurtful feelings but it sure does work to tone them down. Amazing!

    I attended an ACT therapy group for about a year, and although it was, at first, a bit hard to wrap my head around the concept of acceptance as it relates to anxiety, I can now say it is absolutely transformative. The real trick is to keep this idea in your mind and not beat yourself up for not "noticing" and accepting the thoughts and patterns that can hold us back, and indeed start to try to learn not to "beat yourself up" at all, as that's part of the damage that comes from constantly dancing with anxiety without mindfulness and acceptance. Notice and accept even the compulsion to engage in negative self-talk ABOUT noticing and accepting! It can get very meta. It takes time, but it's so effective. Thank you for your work in this area!

    What you are talking about at 3:12 drives adhd , ocd, and compulsive and that you have to do it there and then…. Then theres something else then something else goes on and on….. and they all build and get too much in your head and crushes you! This is how i feel with feeling guilt from past actions i feel like i need to work it all out to feel ok! To rid myself of the burdens and upset. Its too much to even explain

      Same here! But I'm getting better at it every day. I'm hoping to make a video or two about strategies for interrupting procrastination soon! (and yeah, birds chirping is maybe my favorite accidental background noise).

    This was a great video. I have severe ADHD so I liked that it was short and to the point. I am also studying for my CADC - to be a drug and alcohol counselor. I think ACT is PERFECT because rather than dealing with the emotional pain, they ran and self-medicated now those who suffer from addiction can low to deal with their pain. After all, MAJORITY of addicts BEGAN using substances as a way to avoid/escape the pain.
    Not only clients I had but millions of other addicts around the world. After all, who can blame them? It sure feels so much better to self-medicate than think about the pain. I don't say this in a funny or mean way bc I as well was an alcoholic and also had an addiction to pain pills...it was easier and felt better to drink and take pills where I didn't feel the physical abuse from my brother abusing me or when he would get angry and psychologically and abusive, the alcohol would allow e to just laugh at him and make him think I didn't give a crap abt him acing like a "violent toddler".

    Thank you for explaining. At first I thought this meant that I have to like be ok with the Idea that others have hurt me or be ok with beeing in a bad relation or life situation but its really about acepting any emotions and feelings and thought that I have.

    I looked this up after seeing a research study that recommended ACT therapy for auto immune disease sufferers which I am. Interesting that it lowered cortisol which in turn helps the disease.

    I bought Dr Russ Abbot's book "The Happiness Trap" - it's a tops seller in ACT but, it didn't speak to me. Does anyone recommend any other books. I really like Dr J Hibberd's "The Imposter Cure" and Ryan Holiday's "The Obstacle becomes the way". Amazing video, such emotional empathy and intelligence!

      It can be so hard to not seek reassurance from others, especially when we are feeling stuck or scared or second-guessing ourselves. I think it's wonderful you went to therapy and remember that we all struggle to focus on what is in our control. It takes practice and making tiny small steps forward. Best of luck to you!

    Acceptance is a word that turns a lot of people off, but therapists use it with the hurt and depressed anyways. How do you accept that someone in your life is always hurting you?

    • @SjorsHoukes
      @SjorsHoukes Месяц назад

      You accept it by recognising that you’re feeling hurt, and that this someone is the cause of it. You accept the feelings, not the fact that someone is doing it to you! The next step would be to take small steps of targeted action in the area where you have control, where you are able to change something, whether it be in stopping it, or in changing the way you react.

    as I see it there's a lot of shit I can't control but that's a different animal from acceptance. Whether I can or can't control it is the same thing. With acceptance I look at that annoying politician and view him/her almost like viewing a tv screen.

    People who use ACT or try to explain it really stretch the definition of acceptance.

    • @theacttherapist
      @theacttherapist  Год назад +3

      It definitely is different than the traditional definition. I tend to use the term "willingness" with my clients because I think it's more aligned with how we use it in terms of willingness to come in contact with painful stuff in order to move towards what matters to us. I think acceptance is one of those terms that means different things to different people so it can be tricky. Thanks for commenting!

    • @KeithGChannel
      @KeithGChannel Год назад

      I disagree. Terms evolve with time. Definitions of words change. Accepting things as they are Not as I want them to be Is the 1st step in facing what is occurring and then making changes in the directions That I want things be. As a CSA I don't accept what the person did. I accept that it happened and I need to do something about him

    • @smokeystacks420
      @smokeystacks420 5 месяцев назад

      The part a lot of people confuse is the difference between accepting you need help, and accepting the cost of it. But the first stage is called acceptance because both need to be done. Without acceptance of self, you can't accept the change needed to proceed.

    No complaints about the content but your videos are SO edited. Every few seconds I can tell that something was cut out or changed because in the video your position on the screen doesn't play totally smoothly. It's obvious that something stopped and started again. Very annoying! And I don't see the reason for so much of it in a 4 minute video.
