You are so right in this! Even in Europe, the way a singer looks is more valued than how they sound. The tradition of 'prima la voce' has been lost to shameless peddlers of pop culture and its attendant obsession with movie star looks. Now they stock operas meant for large, voluptuous voices with much smaller, lyric voices. It is unsatisfying, but even the public is losing the awareness of what great singing of fuller roles should sound like. Brava Barbieri!
I disagree, the voices are simply not there anymore. The culture which natured such voices is dead.
@@photo161 exactly. No good voice teachers.
Well, another problem what big voices face nowadays and why they can’t make it through- all the YAPs/competitions have an age limit of 30-32 years old ... Normally huge voices demand way much more training and “their time” is supposed to start after 30 If properly coached (and especially in case poorly coached and successfully recovered)... And during the training period people are supposed to eat and pay their rent that they can’t do that “only by singing” . As a reason, people switch professions ... I know in person a couple of good singers who could make it but don’t want/don’t have enough time/need to make their living/ support their families with a more stable major ... And, not a secret, after 30 people don’t want to run around auditioning and competing, that’s a priority of youngsters, people want to get settled ... That’s one of the reasons the opera world is like it is nowadays. But trust me good voices DO exist !
@@photo161 Bingo.
but you have to admit, the female opera singers of the past were hotties/baddies vocally and physically 💁🏼♂️
Everything is so consistent in her voice- I love it! She was a tiny bit flat on the high A, but who cares - I'll take control over range.
Thank you for this priceless testimony of the great Barbieri's artistry.
Immensa, eccezionale artista e cantante! Grande Maestra Barbieri! 💖💖💖

grande artista !
She's a Mezzo Soprano. period. having all rangeses, but that doesn't make her a contralto or whatever else. She has the COLOR of a Mezzo Soprano.
I agree.
Ella es soprano
@@daniel_5606 È un mezzosoprano a tutti gli effetti.
Fach classification isn't defined by vocal color per se.
contralto shmalto: What is the difference what you or other want to call her. Pigeon-holing singers in voice categories is so silly and fyi italian opera composers never differentiated.
Thank you for sharing this - my absolutely favorite Azucena thrills in yet another selection. BRAVA!!!
Great voice!!....thank you 😚
immensa
Excellent! She certainly knows what opera is about!
Simplemente espectacular.... Voz maravillosa.
Stupenda, meravigliosa anche bravissima❤
Her Laura to Callas's Gioconda is unbelievable. There confrontation scene full of passion & fire.I have never heard or seen another Laura with her intensity, she matched Callas note for note and flung it at her.
After listening to Barbieri I can't help but realize that today we have the likes of Garanca.
Una cosí grande artista... Grazie!
Barbieri was the best in the world and at all time Amneris in Aida
Supreme Fedora
Grandiosa!
Glorious
Grande Barbieri!!! Questa maravigliosa voce di petto!!!
Questa meravigliosa voce messa bene
❤❤
@cinciscott
she's incredible. I was just having the same thought about the space. I could run around in that sound for days~!
I agree with that and of course I know what you mean. Strange, that this kind of singing seems to be lost today, especially with Tenors...
Show them how it's done.
Cantar godendo
Beautifully put cinciscott. For my part, I think quality has been overtaken by the brash, vulgar pace of commerce. Singers these days are more concerned with the fame than the music or the voice, and the cost of living often means that many try to force a career out of their voices before they have the chance to develop said instrument. Tragedy. Fedora is amazing here, though.
Barbieri's voice got darker over time and the placement naturally sat lower over time, which is typical for contraltos. She possessed one of the most innately built and robust chest registers, and for that obviously the upper register receded.
She had a High B as late as the late 50's, squeaking it out at the end of Carmen's Seguillida aria.
she was a mezzo
+Dadacomero A contralto without a comfortable High Bb5 or B5 is no longer a mezzo.
jmiller05 well that's a matter of technique and other things.
To me what defines a contralto is the passaggio and the timbre of the voice.
Listen to Clara Butt singing Deep River or Marian Anderson singing They crucified my lord and compare it to Barbieri singing whatever. To me it's pretty clear.
Also true contralto voices are extremely rare (especially among italian women)
+jmiller05 i love you and your comments but she's no contralto. the timbre is far different and how the voice behaves throughout the registers. i've one heard 3 trained real contralti, none quite good. its a particular voice i think a good mezzo might muster more depth with strenght out of the voice. its not just about being cavernous.
Very interesting comments about
The great. Fedora. Barbieri voice.
Very well said,I agree. Viva LA

In the first audition, the possibility mezzo, brought this area. This one of the most bastard area to sing. Or you are are strong mezzo sure direct to the grand Opera, otherwise don't touch it
Don't you think she sings playback here? No wonder, there are no tensions...
There unfortuntaley and surley is some truth in your words. But studying at a music-academy I know some young singers that still have some interest in the art of singing and in composers etc. But it seems that too often those singers get lost in time-shortness and these modern conflicts. Maybe there is not enough space left for this kind of celebration today?
At one point.. like the late forties, early 50's she was a mezzo who had high notes.. Have you heard the duet with Callas from Norma in 1949... she has high c's in that duet.. She is in fab. voice then.. I think she lost her high notes from all that chest voice.
kgarmaker123
Noooo. She lost high notes because she didn't know how to hit them correctly. In 3:33 you can see the way she tries to sing the high note and how the sound is constricted because of the mouth position.
There is a fantastic video in 'This is opera' channel where it is perfectly explained.
Diego Vázquez Real , don't you know what happened to this channel?? No video anymore there
@@yuliana703 I know. It is a pity. But it's not the first time. Sometimes they close the channel and come back after a few days. Barbieri's video was still uploaded. Unfortunately, the rest of the videos about chest are not available any more. Now they are focusing on falsetto. Wait for some days
Diego Vázquez Real but why do they do it? I started using this channel for learning not long time ago but now I'm afraid😆
