Only Covent Garden, but she is English right? Baker's repertoire included Mozart, Handel and that's it - typical lyric mezzo. She had a wonderful polished voice, but great - that's an overstretch. If you ARE great, top opera houses run after you. That was not the case with Baker.

Obraztsova's voice is not only a voice for the ears, it's a voice to feel with your body, your sternum. You can feel the vibrations going through your sternum. How can one resist to its wildness and violence ? This sure is one of the most erotic emissions I've ever heard in opera.

Yes WHY? Because they lack "musical intelligence"....they can have pretty voices like Netrebko, but it takes more. It takes a love and an understanding of the Music! A pretty voice and temperament isnt enough! Thank you Elena for all the wonderful interpretations you have left behind.
I am a singer myself, and after many years in the business, my guess would be that today, everyone's so busy "making it" before everyone else, that they simply don't have the time/the money/ the patience to make their voices mature enough to sing this kind of stuff the way it is supposed to be sung. Too many singers fight over so few jobs, and not accepting an offer though not really able to sing it, can seem impossible. And at the same time, a lot of teachers have become afraid of voices naturally big - and instead of gently encouraging their pupils to nurture and strengthen their vocal skills, they try to squeeze them into a tiny box as it seems to be more safe. In other words: They wont hold them selves in any way accountable for their pupils developement unless it's a good one. But here's to hoping that the few brave pioners there are, will help turn this opera-voice-fright around. Big is beautiful and healthy when sung properly.
SO true!!! I am a "baby-wagnerian" myself and have to take all kinds of crap while waiting to do the parts I am really supposed to. No one says it's ever going to happen, but I keep working hard in the hope it will. But you can't go around and wait for 20 years, and therefore in the meantime, I do anything I can get my hands on, even non-classical stuff which I love - and eventually, hopefully, it will all fall into place :o)
