    That is definitely gorgeous. This year I finally picked up my D-35 Martin and still owe money on it. It is 1/3 the price of a D-45, but I wanted that specific model for the 3-piece back.

    3Stew Mac has an arrangement with Taylor, who bought the last of the Brazilian Rosewood. I was looking at back and side sets today and it is $1250.00 per set and it was not the best for that price. I am either going to build a dreadnought out of Madagascar Rosewood or African Blackwood because I am a new builder. I have the top put together, sanded and the rosette is in. I am waiting to find the right set.

    Way too much bling for my taste. Does sound great.
    I currently own a OMC, D-35 and a D12-28 and have owned other Martins.
    I have played a lot of nice guitars and not found any that really sound noticeable better once you get beyond that $3-4k price point.
    The law of diminishing returns applies. Huge cost increase for small performance increase.
    Flash on stage.
    Through a stage PA the audience can't tell if it is Ibanez or H&D.
    They just hear our music.
    If we are honest, we buy bling for bling sake in many cases. Status flags.
    As to dumpster finds, I got a 1963 Epiphone Cabellero a neighbor found in a dumpster and I restored it. Did some research. There were less than 800 made in that year in Kalamazoo MI. All solid mahogany, student model in its day, cost about $80 new. Needed extensive repairs, new bridge and nut, new period open tuners. It was originally a left hander, so likely less than 50 of them but restored with right hand configuration since a new bridge needed and I play right handed. It also has the Pre-63 small headstock even though the serial number dates it as 1963 on the original factory sticker in the body. Loose braces (ladder braced) and cracks repaired. I take it out to play once in a while. 60 years old now.

    That is a beautiful guitar. It is remarkably similar to my son's. Brand new Martin guitars all seem to have high action, usually over 100 thousands, my son's was worse than that. I know it doesn't change the neck angle, but just by adjusting the truss rod, took 20 thousands off of it. I was happy because I didn't have to take as much off the saddle. It use to make me a little nervous working on it, because it is one expensive ax. Not anymore, despite being expensive, it's still a guitar and I am able to do set up work on it. The one odd thing is that a straight edge coming off the neck does not make it over the top of the bridge and I still have good action on it, and could still take a little more saddle off if I need to. Knock on rosewood, it's been stable.

    • @zapa1pnt
      @zapa1pnt Год назад +3

      FYI: Do Not use the truss rod, to change the string height, at the 12th fret. That is Not what it is for.
      The truss rod is Only for adjusting the up/back bow of the neck.
      If you have high action at the 12th fret, check for belly bulge at the bridge Before checking the neck angle.
      I made that bad mistake, of checking neck alignment, with the bridge, first and ended up doing an unnecessary neck reset.
      String action Always gets adjusted at the saddle and the nut and is measured at the 12th fret.
      If you have any questions about that, ask Randy. 😁✌🖖

    • @jthonn
      @jthonn Год назад +3

      I know, did you even read my reply. I know it does not change the neck angle, but if you have way too much relief, it does affect the action. I would have had to take 40 thousands more off the saddle to get the action right and it would have been screwed up because of the relief. If you were to adjust the rod after, you would have been in a world of hurt, well not really, just would have to make a new saddle. I have learned to always adjust a truss rod before you take measurements and do any other work. I've seen Caleb set a guitar up without checking the relief, he may have gotten lucky, but that isn't the right way to do it.@@zapa1pnt

    • @zapa1pnt
      @zapa1pnt Год назад

      @@jthonn: Well, as long as your neck is flat, that part is good.
      "The one odd thing is that a straight edge coming off the neck does not make it over the top of the bridge and I still have good action on it...."
      On this issue, I would say, check for belly bulge, before anything else.
      As I said, I made that mistake.
      I found out the hard way how important that is. "Awwww, F."
      So, now, if something someone says is not Really spelled out or extremely obvious, I just put out my schpiel, to make sure everyone knows the process, so they don't make my mistake, because fixing it is going to be a B.
      Nothing personal in my original reply. I've posted that many times, since My F' up.
