I have done this before on probably 100 or maybe a few more weapons of mine and friends of mine over the past 20 plus years. Some people think it looks tacky as hell....but WHO CARES!!! Looks cool on my weapons and l have never had any complaints from the people I have done this for.

Hi, greetings from the UK, i hope you all are keeping safe out there. I have watched many videos on colour filling the AR type platform rifles and am considering doing this to my M&P 15-22 but haven't had the confidence ......up until now.
Your way is by far the best with the toothpick method. Your instructions are so clear and easy to follow and the finished product looks like it was done at the factory.
    Well done mate, 1st class.
    Neil.

I've watched a few videos like this and I think your approach of filling the design with the toothpick as a paintbrush is the best. Most people have such an excessive amount of paint to clean off that it doesn't make any sense to me.

Another tip is to use a hypodermic needle and push it through a piece of paper. I like to use automotive color match pens. Two colors works good if you run a hardener between color coats to stop migration and wipes up clean if you mess up. Nice work dude, looks wicked!

This is a great set of videos. Very intuitive. What I found that works good also and makes the red stand out more, was to do everything in white first, clean everything up, and then cover the areas to be done with the red again over top of the white. The white behind the red makes the red stand out more bold.

I have looked at so many You Tube Videos on how to color fill and yours has to be one of the best I have seen,I especially like that when removing excess paint there is no residue paint left around the engravings like I have seen on other videos..I have a couple AR's,300 Blackoutt and a PSA AR-10 I am building that I want to do and when I do them I will not have any of lower part kits installed so it should make it a little easier I think especially around the safe fire engraving...

Great tutorial Bravo1, a job well done! I really liked the resolution of your camera too, what is it?
Pretty much do mine the same way you do except I use a Japanese artists brush that only has a couple of tiny bristles on it so it makes very fine lines. The other differences are:
    1. Sealing it all with a satin clear coat when finished.
    2. I use a credit card edge to drag across the trademarks or letters while still wet.
    3. To make colors really stand out I use a white base coat and when dry fill the rest in with color.
    4. I use Hoppes No 9 instead of mineral spirits to clean up any paint not in the grooves.
I too have a Vortex Strikefire II red/green dot (with 3X magnifier) but haven't used it yet. How do you like yours? I also have an XD Service model (4" bbl) in 357 Sig so I guess we have the same tastes in weapons and equipment. :o)

Then use some non acetone nail polish remover w/ those "smooth papers" and wipe off. No need for toothpicks and such.

@@bravo1xray522 The paint job I did on my receiver went well. I'm a little more familiar with small detail painting than you are due to scifi and fantasy miniature painting I've done in the past. I used a fine tip paint brush through out instead of tooth pics and got a very good result doing it that way. Red for FIRE and White for SAFE just as you did. White for the serial number too. I wanted that to really pop out. And then I used Gold for the rest. The Gold was difficult to work with. Instead of fine pigment it uses flakes of metal to provide color. I had to very carefully clean and apply two layers of Gold to get the desired result. It was a little more time consuming and the timing of when to start cleaning (it's much shorter) between applications is much more important than with the solid color pigment paint. In all it was a good exercise in patience.
I have a friend who is an honest to God gunsmith with a manufacturing license no less who helped me out and supervised the rest of the build. As a result I have a very nice looking long range AR-15 target rifle. I'm really looking forward to taking it to the range. :)
      Cheers from the Buckeye State!

If you want to paint white and some other colors, use Markal Laquer- Stik's. Quick easy paint sticks no mess! www.markal.com/solid-paint-markers/lacquer-stik/ Brownells and Amazon carries these. Just Rub in a circle, the paint liquifies into a laquerpaste. Wipe off the surface carefully on top and your done in about 3 minutes. 'paint cures in 2 or 3 days permanently. Use model masking tape from a hobby store like Tamiya Brand if you do multiple colors. Way better than testors which I have use only for a custom color.

Me: I think I'll do my Lion Crest stamped lower to show off my "Oly".
lower: stamp quality is too poor to paint

What happens when you are cleaning your rifle after shooting the solvent or oils won’t take the paint off ??

Depends on what you're cleaning it with. But for the exterior nothing but mild soap and water would be all that I would use. And that would be for a extreme cleaning. Good question! 73!

It's just they have a lot more colors. I use a little bit more Golder, Brown on my clocks.
