Land Rover Discovery 3: How we replace brake lines

  • #Landrover #LandroverDiscovery #LR3
    Our LR3 did not pass the German TÜV inspection because of the rosty break lines. See in this video how we replace them. We also show how to flare the ends. This is the first of three videos of this big service job:
    1. How to replace the brake lines (this video)
    2. How to do corrosion protection on the chassis (soon)
    3. How to service the electric parking brake module EPB (soon)
    Our videos are not intended as a "how to guide". Working on brakes and underneath of vehicles may be dangerous and our approach is for entertainment only and not intended as an instruction. Work safe!
    Do not stress your wife more than necessary when doing such repairs. Excessive work on cars together with your wife can result in mental stress and a divorce. Do at your own risk.
    Your wife may complain more than Vera during the repairs. This is a completely normal behavior - don´t worry. I cut out 3/4 of the complaining and it may seam harmless now. Take your wife shopping at least once per repaior job or join her doing her favourite things at least twice during a repair - this makes things easier. Let her drive the car more often and compliment her. Let her do the talking and you should be fine.
    Driving a Land Rover Discovery 3 requires a certain passion to this vehicle. Do not buy this car if you got two left hands and an expensive dealer for repair jobs, unless you are rich.
    Thank you for watching our videos. Check out the wheel bearing repair and you may end up buying a LR3 and get hooked. 9.5 l/100km or 29 mpg of Diesel.

    Hi nice work and well presented again
    Copper brake lines should not be used because vibration will cause the copper to work harden and fracture
    In the UK cupronickel is popular as it has superior corrosion resistance and does not fatigue fracture like copper

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  3 года назад +1

      Hello Leslie, I agree. Land Rover should issue a Bulletin to allow use of copper nickel lines. Many other manufacturers have that done already. Thanks for your comment. Have a good start in 2021.

    From a proud Discovery 3 owner. By the way, I’ll never be performing this kind of work on mine. Instead, I put large quantity of anti-corrosion oil twice a year (on April, just after Winter season, and on October, after the Summer season, due to the beach yard corrosion) and my Discovery’s under body seems shiny brand new!

      Hello Angelo, sounds like a good way. Regular maintenance is of most importance on a LR3. We neglected some areas as they are hard to reach and this resulted in extra work now. There will be a video soon how we painted the under chassis.

    • @monstereisa
      @monstereisa 3 года назад +1

      The big corrosion generating culprit in Germany is that they salt the roads in winter. I live in Australia and despite being close to the ocean and even beach driving there is no rust on our Landcruiser after 22 years. I think Italy don’t salt their roads.

    You know, in the UK we are allowed to use copper brake lines for the MOT (TuV), it would be a little safer to only allow steel and cheaper. Loved the steel brake line tools you had! You are also amazing at bending those pipes so well.
    You know your joke ...same procedure as last year. Would be totally lost on most Brits. We don't get to see "Dinner for one" AKA "90th birthday" every Christmas like you do in Germany and for sure Sweden where its all part of the Christmas experience. Sad really, that we don't get to see Miss Sophie and James getting wasted (drunk) like you do. Keep those videos coming!

    There is never a dull day with land rover issues that lead to repair 😱 my line began to leak once I also touch the rusty line in the plastic line holder and I replaced all rotors and pads the pad holder with slide pin seized then snapped off then caliber boots started leaking , land rover have many secrets that come to light that none talks about that you discover while doing simple repair , my lower dash cigarette 12v power plug wasn't working good so I bought a new replacement 12v power plug I removed lower dash unplugged 3 connection for some strange reason I was going to start rover it would not start so I got out my jumper no start I left battery on charger all night , next morning battery fully charged still no crank no start in thinking WTF.. .... So I thought I finish the new 12v plug reconnect the 3 plugs to the 2 12v plug put dash back new plug works good then I thought I see if rover will start now , somebody shut the front door she fired 🔥up like new money , just learn if the lr3 land rover has something unplugged or not in its normal condition with all plugs in the rover won't start , it like having a smart car , you never bought , next time I go home the brake line job is next to do 😰

      Google A005989642009. This is a Mercedes Benz part number. This stuff is actually made in the UK! It requires a special air nozzle to spray it on. This is a protective layer only. As a primer, I used a product called Rostio (made in Germany). You could use any high end primer, for example out of the farm equipment world.

    I am always happy to see your videos because you have an LR3 and so do I and you bring the right mood, I try too!
    My LR3 is from 2005 and with 316,000 km I just noticed that the cardan bearing needs to be replaced, why do you have to change the cardan shaft and not just the bearing? Good luck. (Google translation) Belgique

    :^)) 'Same procedure as every year!' is a seasonal German reference, as this is the last line in the much loved 1963 'Dinner for One' tv sketch starring Freddie Frinton and May Warden, shown every year since at New Year on German tv (and in many other countries).

      Exactly! A great reference and I use it whenever I can. The strange thing is though that almost no-one in England knows about it - unless they worked for a German company.....

    Copper brake lines are so much better in my mind! I've replaced the majority of all of my old ones on my old series Land Rovers with them. Why is it that they are not allowed in Germany? Apologies if you mention this later in the video, I'm halfway through watching while writing this. Regards, Ted UK 🇬🇧

      Copper brake lines are legal now in Germany, but were not back then when we purchased our parts. This video is at least 2-3 years old.👌👍🙋‍♀️

    just replaced the gears in the brake unit because its was faulty red light flashing on dash , opened the unit its and the c clip on the slipper clutch gear had come off in mine , and the slipper gear had siezed on its self , replaced the gears and opon fitting the unit back on noticed the brake pipe line leaking in the excact place as yours , thinking maybe a common place to check very very tiny leak, nothing really what would really notice on the roa,d but if its that brittle and had snapped could be another story, worth checking guys in a very hard place to spot can probley see why it may get missed under a MOT test,

    please tell me the small jack is rated for the Land Rover, its a heavy old beast, I saw someone working with one but it wasn't rated to lift a Discovery, scared me to death thinking if it failed

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  3 года назад

      Don't woory, we only used it to lift the car for a short moment to put the jack stands underneath. Usually we use our big jack, I actually don't know why he didn't use it. I am personally very afraid all jacks and jack stands, don't trust them a bit. And of course it will be my fault when something goes wrong 😂. Thanks for your comment and take care. Vera

    Christian, there is an ecu brake bleed program that will make your brakes much better by getting rid of air that you can't remove through normal brake bleeding. Do you have a gap iid tool?

    • @cmondons
      @cmondons 3 года назад

      I ran the program as I thought my brakes weren't as good as they should be and it took 20mins and replaced a litre of brake fluid. I think it replaces old fluid stuck in the abs pump. It was black! And I bleed my brakes regularly

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  3 года назад

      Hello Jack, I only have a regular Obd2 tool. The regular bleed procedure will not replace all fluid. Maybe I need to get me a gap tool because I get this question a lot. It’s quite expensive so. Thanks for the hint and have a good start into 2021.

      @@Vera_and_Christian thanks Christian, I think it's the best accessory you can buy for the disco! I had to use my abs one time to avoid a collision and after that my brakes were really bad, hence why I used the gap tool and procedure and it was a big difference.
