Four friends and I drove 338 miles to go to In-N-Out Burger and three of us had this same reaction. I think we had built it up in our minds that it was going to be amazing and then it was just okay. Honestly I felt like them, if I hadn't been so hungry by the time we got there I wouldn't have cared it I ate it or not. I'm sure glad I was with friends and we had fun or I would have been really bummed.
I know quite a few Americans and most of them seem to just eat fast food every day so I think eating processed food constantly has killed their tastebuds. Their food is full of sugar and salt. My american friends either dont know how to cook or just don't want to. I'll be hated on a mass level for this but I stand by it hahaha

It's the hamburger of our childhood before quarter pounders. Just a small burger, fresh slice of onion, lettuce and good tomato. That is what makes it wonderful.

You're reactions are spot on. It is overrated and always was. That place is too damn crowded. I suppose the staff are there to handle the crowd, and the food is fresh, but it still takes too long to get a burger from a place that has such few items to being with.

I think part of the fun is ordering through their drive-thru (very efficient) - and I like the history & hype. We had an In-N-Out mystery here in NYC this Summer. It was in all the papers! I recommend White Castle and Shake Shack if you’re ever on the East Coast.
Being from California…you have to consider price to flavor ratio. In-N-Out is the best for its price, plus it just tastes like home. 5 guys is great but I always say it is $5 more than I want to pay for a burger.
You should come to Texas and have some GRADE A Burgers from Whataburger!!! And the reason it’s named In-N-Out is because it goes In one end and comes Out the other end

In all fairness, the first time I had real British fish & chips (in England), I was horribly disappointed. I think I built it up so much in my mind that my expectations were too high. Same goes for the first time I had proper Yorkshire pudding, sausage & bang (etc) while I was there. It just didn’t live up to expectation
