HvZ is a lot like Tetris, you are guarantied to lose, no matter what you do but that is what the games are about, at least you can hold off as long as possible before the end.
That is a VERY good way to describe it!
It also makes it more realistic
It allows your character to grow and develop before the end

"You don't need range/power for HvZ". Absolutely- I've seen people make it to Final Stand with Tek3s back when they first came out, or SSPBs. Play style will always be more important than range, power, and RoF.
"You really need to go into HvZ assuming you gonna get tagged". I was tagged at Endwar *before* I had all my gear on standing at my car. Partly because I didn't fully grasp a rule about car safe zones. Was I mad? Absolutely, but you must get past it. I feel like it is mandatory that people go into HvZ with the mindset of being turned zombie is NOT losing. People who can't accept being zombie should not play HvZ. No matter how much gear you bring, how expensive it all is, how good you think you are... the chance of you getting tagged is super high.
Other tips I think help:
- Don't focus so much on looking "cool" or carrying at ton of blasters. 1-2 is all you really need, and more importantly, 1-2 reliable builds. More ammo > more blasters.
- Play how you want. You don't have to go full zerg rush, or be the squad that does the dirty work. Don't let anyone tell you how you should play.
- Off of that, there is a role for everyone. Don't run well? Be a walking distraction zombie or side-mission search group for humans. You'll find your place.
- Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen- see Hawki's NvZ Vlog Part 4 at 11:43 for what could happen lol
- Listen. Things can get chaotic- but listen to those who have played before and what they are saying. I've seen groups get demolished from flanks because people didn't move to that side before it was too late. Keep your ears open and relay messages when needed.
- and obviously, fun is the key. If that means hanging with friends all night, sleeping through the first mission, and focusing more on people instead of the game, do it!
Those are just off the top of my head :)
On a blaster note, test in a war and run it HARD. For some reason I’ve had problems that pop up only in war conditions, you may think you can simulate war conditions you probably can’t. Testing can reveal problems but there’s no substitute for war conditions, you may do something that you don’t realize is causing a problem but is and you don’t want to find out during first contact that you blaster has a problem.
Some of the greatest stories and friendships of HvZ are not as one runs from the horde, but as one becomes the horde. One of my favorite HvZ stories I was proud to be a part of was at a HvZ in the state of Ohio. I was a zombie and the game masters had missions for the zombies. One mission was create a chant, we came up with Join us! Feed us! We have Capri-suns! And that became a running joke. Now even three years after we go back and take caprisuns and as zombies we hand caprisuns out to new members of the horde. It’s about the fun you have, not how far you get because close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

And if you absolutely can't be a zombie for physical reasons then you can always assist the auxiliary Patsy or assist in other non-com duties like making sure people stay hydrated. There is always something that can be done that will ultimately be greatly appreciated by our fellow members.
i have been watching your, Drac's and Walcom's for videos for about a year now. The three blasters i own (proton, vigilon and a hammershot) are just for shooting stuff around the house. I never got the chance to join a community, and you guys videos are just flat enjoyable especially your story time videos. Even if I found the time and money between real life and my main hobby i would most likely only play with stock blasters, that said the mod tips are interesting. so to summarize "Thank you for helping this Normie enjoy the hobby in his own way"

4:06 yeah, I did a mini HvZ(12 people in a small building) and lasted to the end carrying a 6 shot revolver(which I never even fired) and mainly using a stock Rival Knockout.

Since running is something I can only do in short bursts, I plan to bring a cart to schlep New Zombie's stuff back to the F.O.B. and fresh water back to the engagement area.

I actually was given the privilege of writing the plot for my school’s HvZ with the help of a really good friend of my. My own personal philosophy for creating the stories and missions was to create something the players would have fun with, not one that was geared toward one side or another winning
good luck to those that are going. if I went it would be stock all they way just to be safe.
I play HvZ with UMBC HvZ twice a week. What I learned in my time here is that mods don't matter. I'd much rather use a reliable, unmodded furyfire over a modded rapidstrike. You only need one dart to stun zombies after all.
Personally, I find it fun to get a group of friends together and charge the zombies, fighting them against impossible odds.

at a local nerf war we did a mini HvZ event last season and i was the last human alive but all the kid zombies kept me on my toes and boy that was fun cause i turned around and spammed darts and went down in a glorious blaze of fire it was awesome

Not sure if a jolt has a big enough plunger tube for that to be effective, but a big shock would work.
You can't expect to make it to the last stand with me, the captain, as I will be in the last stand.
I think it is very important to have a reachable, yet not very likely win condition for the humans. If, and I say if because I never actualy played an HvZ, is just a tiny little bit like pen and paper role play, a win condition is key for the fun. There are people out there who have fun in a tetris like game ending, where you can only reach a high score but not win the game. But in pen and paper at least, most people I know of have only fun in "tetris round" one or two times, and are just getting more and more frustrated afterwards. Every fight a tiny little bit more, and that will frustrate them off in the long term.
There is always a win condition. Last Human standing "wins."

Myself and Corporal Armor just played an HvZ here in Minnesota. I was dubbed Tactical Vending Machine at said war... Sigh~
I had a great amount of fun, and gave my life at the very end of Mission 2 making sure that the Humans completed the objective. And then I proceeded to have More fun as a Super Zombie.

So, which is scarier in an HvZ? The slow shamble of the original Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 zombies? Or the fast, capable of running, zombies from Left 4 Dead?
I haven't read that. Hmm, I might have to give both types a go when/if I get to play an HvZ game or two. Also have fun at the events you are participating in, Captain. Bangarang.
Don't be me. I went into HvZ for the first time without fully understanding how it worked. I didn't pack nearly enough ammo and my blasters wee not exactly optimal. Do your research, learn the game, pick efficient blasters, and don't ruin it for others. That's all you really need.
I am so sad and disappointed car trouble is keeping me from joining you on the field of battle this Saturday. I can only hope I get another chance next year.
HVZ sounds like so much fun but there are none near me and I don't have time to go to any of the big ones :/
HvZ games at Grim up Nerf are HEAVILY one sided, they have a 5 second stun timer, so the rounds go very, very quickly if you don't strategize perfectly.
My squad (The Northern Knights) have a strategy for these games that allowed us to last a very long time, in which we find the most defensible area, which for us, would be the back of the chapel car park, set up s sheild wall, and have every single man we can muster stand behind it. In our favoured spot, there's only one way in, one way out.
Yes, it's s double edged sword, as if we get swarmed, we are all going to die, but in fairness, with the 5 second stun timer that makes no difference.
Now personally hate playing a zombie. (With GUN rules that is) as they're broken, if multiple zombies attack one human, they have no chance at all, especially if they can't run.
Secondly, I have a really messed up knee, which I shouldn't at only 18 years of age, and that severely cripples my ability to have much fun as a zombie, especially as I can't rush anyone. Anyway, it's a shame, as id like to be able to be able to enjoy playing a walker, but it's tough to do that knowing how hard it is for most players to fight against something that after 5 seconds, comes at you again.
Everything on this comment may have been confusing, so for a TL;DR
We have a killer strategy for survival of a HvZ round, but due to broken zombie rules, a good 60% of players I've spoken to don't enjoy those games, which is a shame.
That sounds super super bad. I am planning to do a HvZ here in germany and one of the first special zombie rules I created was "I will give slow zobies shields that are big enough to be very protective but not tall enought to protect the whole zombie from getting tagged.
You could also play as a tank for the zeds if your game has that

Some do, some don't. If they are I recommend carrying one. Swords don't run out of ammo.

Most HvZ's don't allow melee at all (for obvious reasons) but if they do, and you actually know how to safely and effectively use melee weapons, then yes, it can be effective since swords don't run out of ammo. The downside is you have to let the Zombies get VERY close to you and thus even a minor mistake will cost you.
@@CaptainXavier Thank you. Say I live were there is not mutch if a nerf community so I cant say I have been to a hvz game so I dont really know the rules exept for what you just covered. I do hope to start a nerf community though because through your vidioes I have seen how fun nerf can truly be, and a lot more exiteing than just 5 people runing around with nerf blasters in free for all games. Yeah...I'm going to have to disagree with you on one specific point: The games where the humans have no win condition are not "Humans Vs. Zombies"; they're "Zombies Always Win"...and "Zombies Always Win" is incredibly boring. The Humans not even having a chance at success sucks all of the life out of the event, in my eyes. "Humans Vs. Zombies" implies the chance that the Humans can actually win, which adds considerably more drama and excitement to the event. "Zombies Always Win", on the other hand...you already know how it's going to end, so why even bother being there?
(I may be taking this too seriously. Please let me know if I am...I've never had much of an imagination, when it comes to role-playing. I'm a NERFy tinkerer, and not much else.)
Yes, those are arguably two completely different games. If there is a "Human victory condition" then that is the objective. It is clear and attainable. In games with no "Human Victory Condition" the objective is to be the last Human standing. It is still clear and attainable. And I enjoy both games. But every body does. If you are absolutely sure that you would not enjoy one or the other of those game types then reach out to the game organizers ahead of time and ask which type they are running so you can avoid the game type you don't enjoy. :)
