Both are great musicians but actually they took the riffs off Eddie James's "Death Letter Blues"... Zeppelin on "Celebration Day" and White Stripes on this cover "Death Letter" (including the lyrics). White and Page transformed the blues riffs into great sounds but the thing is they don't share any kind of credit or tribute not even a mention to raise the name of the real master mind behind their songs... if Jack White is "the Magician" and Page is "the Wizard", Eddie James is mother f***** Merlin...

Chaz Hegstrom The simplicity meshed quite well with Jack's style of playing. In fact, it was good enough to launch Jack into the mainstream spotlight, and when I compare what he's doing now to what he did then, he just sounds way better before than now. Just an opinion. And I'm not saying he's lacking anything now a days.

Fine musicianship. A bizarre combination of Son House songs. The narrator (in the original) is close to suicidal by the end of the song. I've sung "Death Letter Blues." It only works with the traditional North Mississippi pulse. I wear sunglasses when I sing it because I don't want the audience to see that I'm crying (literally). I want the audience to remain quiet, I want them to cry. I want them to experience pain and agony, if only second hand.
The narrator of the song screwed up his relationship with his woman, and now she's dead. He assumed that they would get back together. Eventually. He took their relationship for granted. He wasn't there for her when she needed him the most. That's the blues.

I got a letter this morning
What do you reckon it read?
It said the gal you love is dead
I got a letter this morning
What do you reckon it read?
Said "Hurry, Hurry because the gal you love is dead"
Well I packed up my suitcase
I took off down the road
When I got there she was layin' on the cooling board
    I packed up my suitcase
And I took off down the road
When I got there she was layin' on the cooling board
It looked like ten thousand people standing around the burial ground
I didn't know I loved her 'till they began to let her down
Looked like ten thousand people standing on the burial ground
I didn't know that I loved her 'till they began to let her down
You know it's so hard to love
    Someone that don't love you
    Won't get satisfaction
    Don't care what you do
    So hard to love
    Someone that don't love you
    Don't look like satisfaction
    Don't care what you do
Well I got up this morning
    The break of day
    Just hugging the pillows
    She used to lay
    Got up this morning
    The break of day
    Just hugging the pillows
Where my baby used to lay
