    ABOUT
    I'm Shayla, an earthy mountain mama to 6 wildlings, & a blessed wife to one since 2004. We're a big, Jesus loving, God fearing family & we love to laugh! Hubby & I are second generation homeschoolers, & have been homeschooling our children from the start-since around 2009. We were raised unconventionally, and our parents utilized homesteading before it was trendy, and it was a goal and dream of ours to do the same-but it's only been recently that we have been able to bring this dream to full potential. Last year the Heavenly Father brought to life our dream that we've had for over 25 years and enabled us to begin buying a mountain homestead fixer upper, so join us in the adventures and fun here at our new homeschool/homestead! On the topic of having family and friends interrupt homeschool, that may have been my biggest struggle! I had to unplug the telephone during school hours. Which now the equivalent would be setting your cell phone to do not disturb. I had to post a laminated notice on both of my doors that we were homeschooling from this hour to this hour and do not disturb. Some people still thought that that notice didn't apply to them and they would bang on the door anyhow 😳. I learned to pull the shades on the doors and ignore them. This all might sound drastic and mean but seriously people were interrupting all day everyday. At 3 when we were done school the notices came down, the shades went up, and the telephone got plugged back in. 😁

    I planned July 17th, We made it through morning binders, math, and ela. And I was done. Tuesday was the same. I want to do a full day's worth of work, but we're starting slow. We will go harder when public schools pick up. We have a small home, in poverty you can say, our living room is our homeschool room, and the dining room is the living room. I had 5 children, and we homeschooled 4 of them, during the pandemic two of our boys died.. We took a lot of time off to process that.

    I can’t thank you enough for this series. Mom of 8 here… my oldest is starting her senior year, and my youngest will be five soon… we’ve been homeschooling the whole time, and it has been… a journey! I have thought many times about sharing our journey on YT but I can’t wrap my mind around how I would manage that while actually still getting things done. So kudos to you. You surely have learned to manage ADHD better than I have.🤪 So thanks again for this series!

    • @mountainhomesteadfamily
      @mountainhomesteadfamily  Год назад

      Awe, thank you, Shannon! It is because of Him I'm able to share. So many times I've met older women who went through this kind of lifestyle , and when I'd ask them for advice they had forgotten so much. Sometimes I'd find one that remembered enough practical information that was helpful, but they seem far and few between. One day I realized the most helpful and encouraging women I knew were the ones in the trenches with me and the ones just several years ahead of me. I realized they were not so far removed from this lifestyle to forget how to navigate the thorns! That's when I realized I needed to share.
      As for the adhd, it's like a double edged sword. I don't know that I'd be able to do all this without it, but I have to be careful too that I manage it! Thank you for being here and becoming a member!

    I always made my own homeschool planner / journal. That way I could have my records exactly the way my state-required them. I would use a 3-ring binder. I would put in one section of just lined paper where I could write the date and journal what we did for the day. Then I would have one blank calendar for each month where I could write in our work goals for each day. In pencil because they were always changing. Then I put in a section for books read under each subject. Then I would add activity logs for any course that was tracked by hours. Oh and I almost forgot, I added a section just as daily attendance where I could put a check mark and then total up the days that we did School. That made it easy for me to see when we hit the 175 days that were required by my state. Another tip is I would cover my maps on the table with a clear shower curtain. That way they were right there and waterproof.

    I LOVE the Well Planned Day original planner. It’s for homeschool families and includes daily life stuff. There is one for large families as well. They’re pricey, but I’ve never found a better one. And it runs July to June, so maybe you could fit it all in one. (If I try to juggle several planners, I get SOOOOO messed up. I haven't finished the video yet but I so appreciate this! I'm looking into the simple plan undated planner this year too. I've used a couple of dated ones from them over the years and last year I bought a cheaper dated one so that I wouldn't feel so guilty about blank pages. It finally dawned on me that an undated planner is probably what I've needed all these years. Such an epiphany after 10 years of homeschooling. 😂 We also school year round and I need to be able to make adjustments throughout the year and not feel guilty because some of the planner was wasted. I love the task planners for the kids! Those are exactly what I've been looking for. Those will be so helpful.

    You are not alone! I'm also a second generation homeschooler teaching all 9 ( soon to be 10) children, have been the whole time. I make my own planning pages put in a three ring binder and use a three year monthly calendar to refer to dates. I have a master 12 year plan for my children, so helpful! I loosely plan a Charlotte Mason style term with a more detailed 6 week, Sabbath school rythum plan. Week 7 is either a catch up/grace or off/R&R week. I really appreciate the year at a glance calenders that have all 12 months in one sheet. I use it like you do. We also have a fairly solid weekly rythum to help get all the things done. You know, laundry on Monday, town errands on Tuesday, garden on Wednesday, office work Thursday, clean on Friday, bake and extra kitchen work on Saturday, church and rest on Sunday. No matter what time of year or season of life, this weekly rythum stays fairly solid, so I don't have to think about the emphasis for that day.

    My state doesn't require plans or paperwork to send in (or anything), and so I never used a planner other than the first two years that I homeschooled (starting in 2010). It is strange that I didn't because I am goal oriented and organized. Your planners are beautiful.
    I like hearing "delight directed learning" which is a phrase I have never heard of.
    I used Teaching Textbooks for math in the later years, which was so great.
    I always heard a lot about My Father's World, but I never used it. I used such a mixture of curriculum and made my own history lessons using a lot of library books and my own research. I definitely learned what worked for us and what didn't. With the infant I am about to birth any day, I am sure some of the things I really liked using, won't work this time around either. I guess I'll check out what is new too. I've already started working on compiling ideas, even though it will be 3 years before I start teaching my infant homeschooling things.

    I'm sorry this question has nothing to do with this particular video. In an older video you're using a wooden dry dust mop for your floors. I can't seem to find the video now and I really want to know where you got that dust mop!

      Hello Maria! I got it off Amazon but it's not available anymore, sadly. I did find one similar though, it has decent ratings too. You can find it here amzn.to/3oxvnqW

    Loved this in depth look at your planning routine. However, your math for the school days doesn't seem accurate. You subtracted June and July, and then subtracted 52 Sundays and Saturdays. You would have already subtracted all the Sundays and Saturdays in June and July. So you shortchanged yourself. You should only have to subtract 42 Saturdays and Sundays at that point. You really have 20 more days than you thought!

      Hello! No, it's right, we are doing summer independent lessons for June/July, I should have made that more clear!
