      Thank you Paul , a chap has mentioned here in the comments that there might be a bearing spinning on one of the crank or conrod journals, causing the crank to stick. I'm keen to get a full, free rotation of the crank!! Its raining today, so I'm not bothering with it until the weather clears up.

    I can't believe someone said to you to step back from that car. You are just the sort of person that should be doing these cars. Someone with a bit of passion determination and persistence who is doing it for the pure love of it. You'd think you was doing a 1940s Mercedes the way they are talking lol it's just a 60s Capri for God's sake. My grandpa used to say that people who don't make mistakes are the ones not accomplishing anything. Keep up the good fight and don't worry about the naysayers. It is your car and your adventure learning and trying to fix it. It takes plums to tackle something that you aren't completely sure how to do. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your endeavor so far and I'm an engineer and mechanic of many years. It reminded me of how I started out and made me remember all the things that I had to learn along the way on my own journey to where I am now. Looking forward to you getting that baby going. Good luck along the way, I'll be watching from here in the US, cheering you on.

    • @c5back9

      Danny Tigz: in ‘69 the Mustang would blow away the Capri but by ‘75, smart money was better spent on the Capri V6. With better build quality and handling than its cousin of that vintage, and robust V6 with well fitted manual trans, it would leave the Mustang driver in clouds of dust.

      You know there is a Tesla that outperforms ALL supercars in the world for acceleration up to 140mph.. thay are still not 'hot', sexy or cool, but they have got some serious acceleration!
      The thing I'd miss with one of those would be the smell, sound, and the idea of a 'fire' inside the engine.
      But I guess electric is where it's going, which, if its produced efficiently, is better for everyone.
      I trust that we'll still be messing with our old motors for many many years to come!

    back in the day, before I discovered PB Blaster, I made my own mix that worked really well for many stuck things. It was used motor oil, used trans fluid, parts washer fluid, and used thinners of various kinds. The final piece of the puzzle was a big a$$ breaker bar on the crank nut. Also, as I watched this video, your bearings are not seized, it the rings in the cylinder bores. so even when you get it to turn completely over, the rings will most likely be frozen in the ring grooves. Or not, you'll know if you get compression. My thinking is unless you are planning an engine swap, it might be worth your time to do a quick and dirty "rebuild", just tear it down, clean it up and re-gasket the whole thing. But at the end of the day, it's your car. Will be watching to see what happens. Cheers!

    It's a Capri, mate. People all over the world love these cars and there isn't much on YT. I just found this video in my recommended list. I haven't seen Part 1 and haven't finished watching this. Rebuild that engine and hopefully it'll run well. Oh, the theory is that hot oil is 'thinner' and can, therefore, get down between the cylinders and walls through the ring. BE GENTLE WITH IT!!!!

  • @baylessnow
    @baylessnow 5 лет назад +2

    I used the same technique on my first car, a HB Viva when I was a lad. Now that had only sat for a week or two with the head off and after putting it all back together it needed new piston rings and a good glaze bust of the cylinders! It ran great afterwards, my mate even bought the engine and put it in his HC Viva. So I'm expecting your Pinto to smoke like a steam train when it fires up. Fingers crossed for a better result though.

    If am wrong please forgive me. 1969 capri was fitted with a crossflow engine (ohv over head valve) the engine you have is as we see overhead cam. Ohv engine had motorcraft / ford / lucas parts. Your one has orange distributor cap (bosch ) it should be black. Starter and alternator are bosch. Should be lucas. seen on the o/s inner wing what looked like a regulator box. Theses where fitted if an dynamo was fitted. Year suits this. Only from memory but it's worth a checkout mate. Someone at some point done an upgrade. Great stuff. Looking forward to seeing more 👍👍👍

    Good show, you're getting there. If in doubt, call a friend, that's my motto. I thought with Part 1 that your crank was rusted solid. Just a tip, you need the oil to go down the sides of the piston, a blob in the middle of the piston won't help. What I could see from afar, your cylinders looks OK, it was just a bit of surface rust.

      Hot Diesel Fuel will always release Pistons..Heat the Fuel in a Can and pour 50 ml. on to each Piston.never use Percussion for that problem..

  • @stanwilson8089
    @stanwilson8089 5 лет назад +1

    Automatic transmission oil works better than boiled oil.Seeing as you will be changing the oil and oil filter,you could fill the engine to the top with diesel,leave it overnight and drop it out.Some of those old fords used to 'bake' the tappet adjusters,so them is a good idea before you replace the head.

      @@Classiccarbscouk Yes I saw a mint restored 1971 Mk 1 1700 XL that was sold for about 17,800 euros lately in Germany. It doesn not mean that you need to have a 3.0 litre Essex engine under the hood or a GT version equipment. A matching numbers car with good condition a good working order should do at least 12,000 euros which is about 10,000 GBP. Cause Classic Enthusiasts do not drive faster that 65 miles per hour anyway with it. That can be achieved also with a 1300 Kent from an old escort !

    You have a working starter, the oil pump works, you have got the pistons moving. But you need to keep turning the engine forwards, (not forwards and back) if there is something stopping it, it may be an indication of a slipped shell, or loose cap (main or rod). Continuing to smack the piston crowns in now redundant, as you have proved they move. For the limited mech advantage, continuing to thwack the pistons; risks damage to the piston crowns (tops), skirts and GPH. (Gudgeon Pin Hole). Try putting a ratchet on the crankshaft pulley and turn clockwise. If there continues to be interference, you may have to drain the oil, remove the sump cover and see what is fouling downstairs. May be the oil pickup pipe in the way. Could be a loose bolt allowing a conrod cap to hold up continuos rotation, but please NO more hitting, Rough arsed engineering damages stuff!

    • @Classiccarbscouk
      @Classiccarbscouk  5 лет назад +2

      Agreed.
      Admittedly, watching back at the footage, it is a bit cringeworthy seeing all the hammer blows and dirt in the bores etc..
      The idea that there might be a spin bearing causing the crank to stick, is scary!
      I've almost wore off the flats of the crank pulley bolt... I might have to refresh that before turning it again.
      Thanks for your insightful comment and tips.
      Keep watching.

      I agree with hoppinonabronzeleg, get the sump off !. I cut my teeth on pintos, they hold a special place in my heart. The pinto engine WILL take some serious abuse, but she is an old lady, you wouldn't smack your gran with a hammer to get her moving !.....treat the pinto the same, help her out of her undercarriage, treat her to some tea, maybe a nice bunch of Sweet William, then warm her up a little and give plenty of lube, then gently turn her over with a ratchet !. She will perform for you......Great project, I wish you the all the best and I am so jealous, I am hooked where's part 3 ????.

    • @therealzipp0r
      @therealzipp0r 5 лет назад +1

      i disagree, the engine needs to be turned backwards and forwards against the point where its stuck, with lots of oil in the piston to bore gap. the bores are rusty thats all. but yea, no more hitting on the pistons.

    Thanks for my moment of fame HaHa ... I'm glad you realised that solvents were not the way forward and lubrication is key. You started to impress me until you connected the negative jump lead to the positive switched terminal. I nearly had to go on another rant there :) ... But seriously though, I have to say I admire your tenacity in sorting this engine out .. you keep this up and we will have to put you forward for "The Old School Mechanic's Club" :) :) .. Oh and getting the pistons past TDC ... you might try busting some of that old carbon from the top of the cylinders with a bit of wet and dry and utilise that hole you made by removing the starter to use a screwdriver through the ring gear to lever the flywheel round .. It's amazing the amount of torque it gives without stressing the pistons. You will find that at TDC or BDC there is nothing that can be achieved by hitting the pistons as there is no counter balance and they wont move any more ;) ... best of luck my friend and it's good to see you happier :)

    Well your my first newbie in a long while. Clean it all up as dirt makes for a poor connector. While it is being cleaned by you on and around the terminals, place the battery on a charger to freshen the charge in it. Put the starter back on in reverse of how you took it off. Put the battery back in the case for it but don't hook up just yet. Follow the instructions on how the timing belt goes on to the tee. it does fit. Make sure the tensioner is working correctly and spins then tension the belt so it doesn't slip. No. one flug is the first fiston in the block take the cap off the distributor and figure out where it is pointing.If the intake valve has just closed and the piston is on top dead center, put that plug wire on the plug corresponding to that cylinder.The firing order should be on the intake manifold.while the cap is off , pay attention to which way the distributor turns when you turn the motor is turned. Not all distributors turn clockwise. If no firing order is present, going slow, watch to see which intake valve opens next and put the next plug wire on it following in order of the first one. You only have to figure out which is next and the last one will figure itself out. The intake valve is the one closest to the intake manifold. Tighten all the bolts after a good scrub in fuel oil. Lubricate and don't overtighten. broken bolts are rough to do when you don't have experience

    Those old Capri and Cortina engines had problems with the cams,and apart from the case hardening on the cams being too thin,the oil pickup pipes to the camshaft were too small a dia.The lack of oil to the camshaft caused the cam followers to wear into the camshaft.
    It is a good idea to check the oil pipe pickup filter in the sump,if it gets partially blocked,it restricts the oil flow to the cam.I bought a Cortina once,and someone had used cooking oil in it instead of engine oil,the pickup filter in the sump had what looked like a digestive biscuit blocking the oil flow.

    try cleaning the rust from the bores with a bit of wet and dry 240-320 grit and some kerosene or light oil to give the rings a smooth surface to run on as the rings could be trying to ride over the rust and its making the pistons rings tighten up in the bore as they rise.

    Excellent! Btw was confused re OHC Pinto being in your early pre facelift Mk1 (thought OHV (or V4/V6) until '72 facelift) but then noticed car is LHD- maybe LHD cars had pinto option earlier than UK ie instead of 'our' pre-facelift ohv 'Kent' OHV and 'Essex' V4/V6' cars? Or maybe your engine from later car (carb looks modern too). Good luck whatever and thanks for sharing your projects progress with us all out here on our sofas!
