"Alle Menschen werden Brüder" -

Fernando Villegas Yes it is so different from anything written before. VJDanny1979 I'm a Huge fan of the 2nd movement its almost impossible to write a piece with they dotted figure and it not sound like Beethoven. The first two movements are epic to me. The 3rd movement not so much thought it is beautifully written and is huge in terms of length follows the same structure of the 5th symphony slow movement and has the same lyrical taste of the 4th and 6th symphony although one can argue that these themes are much more romantic in sound and of greater interest then any other slow movements of his contemporaries. But that's just my opinion.

Its amazing how Beethoven composed his 9th symphony when he couldn't hear a thing. He dedicated his 9th symphony from a poem called "Ode to Joy" by Friedrich Schiller who inspired other composers. This masterpiece will last for all eternity. What the Enlightenment and Romantic Period produced was pure intellectuals and beauty in the Arts. J.S. Bach would have been impressed to hear Beethoven's masterpieces. One of my favorite periods in the history of humanity.

@@BleakVision not too fast. Beethoven left us metronome marks for all of his symphonies because he was worried people would play them in the wrong tempi. This tempo is pretty much what Beethoven indicated - of course there's still a lot of room for interpretation. But nevertheless Beethoven wanted it fast

Have never heard the last notes of the second movement played like that. We always hear that cheeky little coda played loudly, definitively, with a definite note of finality, as if, game's over, that's it, I'm done, joke's on you. But here it ends softly, almost gently. It's bloody wonderful! Many years ago, I actually bought a book of the score of the symphony, thinking that one day I would play the symphony and read along with it. But without any musical training, that was never going to happen. But the book is a wonderful thing to have all the same, and just now I plucked it off the shelf and went to the end of the second movement. As far as I can tell, it's actually marked "p". P for pianissimo!! Who would have thought!! So perfect. Very grateful for that dynamic performance, brilliantly directed, with truly superb performances all round. And also - how good was it to see the entire chorus singing without books! God, it's a piece of music, isn't it? Forza Beethoven!! I have listened (on my iPod) to that entire symphony standing at Ludwig's grave in Vienna. Now THAT was a pilgrimage!

These days on my part, it takes considerable effort to sit through another performance of the Ninth -- indisputably the Everest of symphonies -- without feeling the onset of ennui after a few bars as one's interest begins to wane, either because of the lacklustre proceedings or simply, it being a question of having listened to too many Ninths in the recent past to warrant yet another so soon. (Or perhaps, after Furtwangler's Ninth which set the benchmark that many other conductors since then find it difficult to match, let alone surpass, we are hard put to find one able to meet all expectations, save that of Karajan's, and therefore willing to give our whole-hearted attention without prejudice?). But somehow there comes a time, rare though these barren days, when there appears a performance of the Ninth, or for that matter any other piece of music worth its salt, which rivets one's attention right from the first bar of the music to the last. And this is such one. Amen.
