It's amazing how compressors can sound like a volume boost to a new user. You may not think your compressor makes a difference standing next to your blasting amp but it makes a huge difference to the tone your FOH and audience hear. This is a top shelf one but a cheap mxr dyna comp can give a very decent outcome especially country and cleaner players.
In a way compression is a volume boost it smashes the frequencys together then boosts them making it a more level signal. The thing with using guitar comps on bass is the lower frequencys can disrupt and cause issues. Hyper luminal has a hpf(from 5 or off to 500) (accessible in the dark glass suite)
LowMan Josh how do you manage this - I would expect a bass signal would benefit even more from compression to ensure you’re cutting through at the exact freq you’re intending? Comp would assist by cutting out the low and hi transients and giving you a more even signal I would think?
@@Atttuner yes and no too much compression eats up the tone makes it sound like you have dead strings. You want to retain some of the characteristics. But that's the beauty of the blend knob it allows you to have a high compression and still retain tone with a level volume as well. But you can with the blend knob all the way left (dry) use the level knob to treat it as a boost VS a comp
Dan Brian no, compression does not have anything to do with high vs low frequencies. Likewise, a transient isn’t high or low, it’s just a volume spike. Compression helps you sound better in the mix because your volume is more even, but it doesn’t do anything to get you sitting in the mix regarding frequencies.
Please make a video where Dave shows his approach to recording and mixing bass. All the metal bass tutorials results in a dissappointing somewhat bodyless tone. Or if there already is a video about that, would be muh appreciated if someone could link or refer a video for me.
Superluminal generally refers to something moving faster than light. Hyperluminal would either mean moving much faster than light, either by at least double or an order of magnitude. The definition is a bit arbitrary and obscure.
Is the placement of the compressor critical in your effects chain? I do not have an effects loop on my amp so I go from my bass to the Harmonic Booster, then to Vintage Microtubes, then to a Boss BB-1x, then to the amp. I have a Hyper Luminal on the way and want to be sure to put it in the correct position if it is crucial. My first thoughts were to put it at the end of the chain before the amp.
Mixes the clean and effected signals . Totally left is clean. It is placed before the outpout control so it can be used as a transparent booster blended to the left.
Thanks 4da video!! How do you power this Darkglass Hyper Luminal Hybrid Compressor? The manual states it requires a regulated 9 volt DC adapter with a current draw of 250 mA. I'm having difficulties locating one online. What do you recommend?
Samuel Parra you can use any AC adapter that is rated at least 250 ma. Just don’t use one that supplies less than what a pedal is rated to use. No issue with over supply just with going under. Hope this helps you find something
I think so too but some compressors do have bass versions of them, for example origin effects cali76 compact bass, diamond bass compressor or others. That's why I wanted to ask.
The cali76 bass variant is only a high pass filter as far as i am aware, i bet you can do without it just fine.. Never seen the diamond one though. But any compressor can do the trick if you like the sound of it. I Prefer a fet into a optical, like say a cali76 into a effectrode pc-2a. No bass variant needed. But Again, there are no rules.
It's easier to use a bass compressor for a bass and guitar as they act in different frequency ranges which can cause inbalance in the volumes. It's not as sufficient to use a guitar comp for bass but it works quite well to use a bass comp on a guitar. However if you use high gain (distortion or od) comp isn't absolutely necessary for the most part.
It's ironic that a video demoing a compression pedal, has a vocal track that is absolutely *dying* for compression. Rabea is loud, Dave is quiet, but their laughter is loud, and their sibilance are like screaming S and F and SH knives stabbing through the speakers.
Tell Dave to look at the camera. He suppose to be conveying the message to youtube ,Not you.Sorry,Just thought it may help him on his connection with youtube. What do I know though.lol Cool beans Rabea
Ya they work well and they look ok. Not really the point though. If I told you the circuitry was also cheap what would you say?? It's the fact that you're paying $250!!!
Noooo. Touch screens hate me and the feeling is mutual. I want my blackberry back haha. Seriously loved the manual keyboard. Touch never makes anything more accurate so why do it on a pedal where you want accurate and fast. Guess I need to file my finger tips to points.
I considered this pedal but ultimately decided to buy a Super Symmetry... I love to just turn knobs and try to steer away from anything that relies on software that will in time be obsolete. The hyperluminal sounds good but I prefer staying closer to analog.
This guy seems to have little understanding of what the knobs are doing or where to turn them in order to best demonstrate the range of effects this pedal can offer. And what happened to keeping the blend knob all the way to one side so we can hear just the compressed sound?
Superluminal = faster than light. Hyperluminal = much faster than light. (Much like supersonic vs. hypersonic.)

Love the new album and are excited to see you in London!!!
I like that I could also see the effect of the compressor on the waveform on Bea's monitor. Nice pedal!
Also, I impressed with Dave's playing skills and highest level of using different technics)
Darkglass is just gold
💯%
Speak the friggg up Dave
He needs the compressor on vocals
Please make a video where Dave shows his approach to recording and mixing bass. All the metal bass tutorials results in a dissappointing somewhat bodyless tone. Or if there already is a video about that, would be muh appreciated if someone could link or refer a video for me.
Sure dude. Check out his recording and production course on Musicisum, he covers all of that in there!
Rabea Massaad oh cool! Thanks mate!
Thanks Dave for explaining settings, aprecciate)
sounded great guys!
Great review guys and I discovered your music because of this! Really digging Dorje's music! Cheers!
I'm digging Dave's new cut.
Dave. Also, nice pedal! Very flexible sound.
question for your next Q&A... Who was doing the dialog in Fire by the Silos?
Love the new record! Listened to it, in full, this weekend, on my 7.1 system.

What are you trying to achieve?
Try both at the beginning and end of your chain and see which works best for you. A lot of people swear by either placement.
You should do the make a song in 1 hour challenge! I'm really curious what you would be able to come up with!
Demo line 6 helix stomp for guitar and bass
Metal Fusion/Progressive Metal Underground Rocks!!!
So, is the Compression control analogous to the threshold control on other compressors?
I just don't know how to explain the difference between Comp and Ratio can you help me ?
Hey bea, I was wondering really quick what your timeline settings were?
The blend knob seems to work as a make up on a compressor is it ?
Mixes the clean and effected signals . Totally left is clean. It is placed before the outpout control so it can be used as a transparent booster blended to the left.
Wich power supply are you using? I don’t want to Ruin my Hyper Luminal..

Frost River, thanks for the info. I will be ordering the MXR Iso Brick to power this Darkglass Compressor.
Bea! try this pedal with a regular guitar. Im curious.
Can this pedal be used for guitar as well?
Why not? Its a compressor. There are no rules.
I think so too but some compressors do have bass versions of them, for example origin effects cali76 compact bass, diamond bass compressor or others. That's why I wanted to ask.

Thanks man. I'll see if it works out.

Please do a video on your Moog
Yes!

Dave's plosives are aggressive why he speaks so Light I'm the same way I hear it and speak with a soft voice.
How are YOU talking about weird and awesome names, Abomasum, ataraxy, phoneme ANTROPOCENE?
Soft spoken, Loud fingers.
Beazzaal love the new album 🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼
Hyper luminal because it’ll show all the details of your playing.
he looks like rob chapman :)
Hyper luminal, its mega bright innit?
Mega fast!
DAVE
Just bought a Keeley plus and you do this to me.
Me, too!!!
You still have an amazing pedal to play with !
What's up, Rabea?
Hyper Luminal as in really f***ing fast attack, maybe?
Yes
Oohh yeeah!
Tell Dave to look at the camera. He suppose to be conveying the message to youtube ,Not you.Sorry,Just thought it may help him on his connection with youtube. What do I know though.lol Cool beans Rabea
You need to clip a microphone on Dave...
i don't know if this pedal rocks or its just dave
Just Dave, compression pedals doesn't change your sound, it just makes it more smooth without any crazy spikes of volume.
youre here for 16:40
Never really found much use for a compressor, all they seem to do is make things sound louder.
Reduces the dynamics, as in the overall volume difference. Really useful for clean stuff, clean tapping, but also heavy riffing
Yea me either
It kind of bothers me that a $250 pedal uses the cheapest possoble knobs, found on all joyo pedals...cmon
They just look good
Ya they work well and they look ok. Not really the point though. If I told you the circuitry was also cheap what would you say?? It's the fact that you're paying $250!!!
It’s really rare to hear Dave playing clean.
Dave.

I'm the same way how ever I own this pedal and I have no issues using this pedal.

what happened to dave lol
