I'm so confused. You make unbelievably musical, well produced and especially played demos and have very few subs, while there's a ton of guys out there with less skills (bass most importantly, but also production) with busy channels. Keep it up and I hope the best for you!
@@OlavSchneiderreally???? Just for bass players??? I use one and have played guitar for Ray Charles, Stephen Stills, Loggins. So before you dis ANYBODY. Think about being kind, helpful, positive and productive...like our host here. Thank you
Amos, man, your demos are informative and entertaining; and I LOVE that you play outside the fuzzy percussive space occupied by most Darkglass demonstrators. This is the first live-use compressor that I haven’t just wanted to turn off because it’s killing my dynamics.
Thank you. Glad it was helpful. Between the modes, GR meter and mix knob it’s really easy to keep the dynamics of your playing. I was surprised by this one.
I bought this pedal after watching this video. Thank You so much, I absolutely love it. I was sold on the FET mode after watching this, but after messing with it, BUS is actually my favorite set at 4:1. Blend, Compression and Output set at 2 o'clock, and time at 10 o'clock.
Hey @AmosHeller, great demo, thanks! I think you've misunderstood how the sidechain works though. It takes a copy of input signal, applies a high-pass filter on it and uses that to trigger the comp. All your low-end is still compressed together with other frequencies. The benefit of this is that the very loud low-end and sub-bass frequencies do not trigger the comp too early. A neat feature to have on bass, used a lot in the studio work AFAIK.
Killing it Brother!!! All of your videos are inviting, well produced and your playing and production are top notch!! The variety of examples that you've taken time to share has enabled me to hear very clearly how a number of these creations can and will fit within my own world of music. Thank you Big-time for all of your info and much continued success to you!!
That Musicman setting was lush. That alone is the reason I’m going to get one of these pedals. The all in is pure punch your face in tone. Love it. Thanks Amos
I’m finally getting back into bass. Got a DG AO, ordering this to compliment it. Thank you for this amazing breakdown and your great channel - I’m now a subscriber :).
Finally got my HL the other day after watching your video countless of times before the purchase and during the waiting time 😅. Thanks a lot Amos for a great review, it helped a lot. I'm very impressed with the HL and I can't wait to get more and more comfortable with it 😎
Ah another Souls fan, I see. Big fan of your work, always very informative without being overwhelming, great playing that is a bit different from what most reviewers/demoers play, and a few quirks and funny bits for good measure. Didn't mean to review a demo channel but I guess I just did.
Ooooh, the Time knob on this is the same as the ATT/REL knob on a Cali76 Compact Bass. I honestly avoided the Hyper Luminal because my Super Symmetry has both an attack and release. If it is similar to a Cali76 Compact Bass, then that may change my view a little bit. It's a little late though, as I just moved to an Empress Effects Bass Compressor because my Super Symmetry had started to make noise as the gain reduction LEDs turn off , and... whoa boy, that thing is a dream come true. If you ever come across one, Amos, give it a look!
I don't know a lot about compression and I have a couple that other than sustain I can't tell much difference.I bought the Hyper Luminal and what I can tell is that it makes my sound better, just more substantial with better definition.
Thank you Amos. Compression is very confusing to me and you have helped clear up alot of confusion on my end. I'm glad I purchased this pedal as I've bought and resold many before. I think I have found my "soul" compressor. ;-) Cheers!
Thank you for the great explanation. I purchased this pedal and had a hard time "getting" it. Ive got a much better educated grasp on it now. Subbed, thumbs up etc......P.S,you forgot to mention same pedal also doubles as a guitar compressor too via DG website
Nice review!! It would have been more helpful though if you used the Music Man and dynamic playing on FET to compare the 3 comp modes. It would have shown way more how the BUS and SyM work. I own the HL and 2 years later i am still discovering new magic working on it!! So many possibilities!! Keep posting your amazing reviews!
Hey Amos, Big deal here! What's best in your opinion: the Cali76 Compact Deluxe/Bass, or the Hyper Luminal (given that the Darkglass emulates the tone of the 1176, which is the inspiration of the Cali76)? Anyway, thanks for the demo, YOU have been amazing ;)
Excellent demo. Which is the setting to rule them all? This pedal is just too good - I have it on SYM, turn all the dials to 12o'clock, set the output to match, ratio 2, and have a phobia of even opening the DG suite. However that FET 'all-in' setting in this video just sounded so good, I may have to step out of my comfort zone and start tweaking.
It had me is Hyper Luminal... The Alpha Omega Ultra replaced my beloved MXR M80. Could this be coming for my M87? Is compression at the front of the chain and again on the way out plain crazy talk?
I mean-if it sounds good it sounds good. It’s not hard to imagine a mix engineer doing something like that. For live sound I doubt you’ll really need to compress twice (and this is before whatever FOH has going on)...try it and report!
Amos! That intro though!… wow man, that sounded great. As a bass player who uses a handful of effect pedals, do you suggest putting the comp at the beginning or end of the chain? When I use a rat type pedal, I will ride the bass volume so I understand that the comp will affect that aspect of that, but otherwise, what are your thoughts? Also, where does one find a VU meter that’s easy to use in this situation? Did you mean an analog ,enter or something in an application on the computer. Thirdly, if the root word of computer is comp, does that mean that it is also compressing something? Thanks for the great content! I always look forward to seeing what you’re up to. I need a Mr. know it all in my life like in the rocky and bullwinkle cartoons.. I have so many questions
So this is one of the Great Bass Gear Questions: comp at beginning or end? Personally? I like the end. It “glues” the sound together, can help make impactful effect changes stay at useable levels, and you get all the dynamic richness of a drive/fuzz/distortion reacting to your playing, but still get a nice push back. I love playing into compression. There’s certainly upsides to putting it first, too, depending what other effects you’re using (especially delays and reverbs, as compression after these can affect feedback/reverb tails). In the end, if it’s not too much trouble, try it both ways and see what you think!
@@AmosHeller Amos, thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. I kinda figured that the comp at the end of the chain would make more sense… at least for what I’m doing anyway. I have the big box limited edition origin cali76 and it cool but I wanted to try something different to compare. I’m still trying to figure out the differences between that one and an optical comp and which would feel better. Thanks again 🫡

I also am wondering this. I have an x ultra, which i use in red mode, into a vintage microtubes, into an Alpha Omega. I just orderd the HL and plan to put it at the end of this chain....am i crazy for this? My highs are already compressed, but then i slam the signal through other pedals (not always on but sometimes i do have all pedals on). I intend to make corrections at the end of the path. Please someone let me know if I'm insane for this.
Pls, when you comment a pedal/amp/speakers, use the same bass and play the same riff. So we can really hear the differance. Its a bit of a guess now, is it the bass? The style? Or your urge to showing off your bass skills. Greetz from Holland.
Always confusing when you turn a threshold down by turning the knob clockwise. I understand that pedal makers want to make easy-to-use compressors but they make them more confusing when up is down.
