I had no idea THIS would be the video! Ha, well done and great jamming with ya again!
I have a crazy sketch of a guitar that would for sure would be a one of one called the Kaiju Manavore I completely free handed the shape of the body and headstock I’m going to add more details soon would it be possible to get an email to message someone about getting it built or you guys could take the idea 💡!
I've been playing for 35 years and I've never heard anyone cover this song! Seriously!
ive never even heard of it until now
100% thought it was another mustang sally joke
ifykyk
@@skinbagmusic9530 BIG rock hey?
@@DMSProduktions what does that mean
@@skinbagmusic9530 The 1 you grew UP under!
Why do I feel like they went down to the "Crossroads?"
probably a fetish thing
Same here man.Just a hunch I guess.🙃😏👍
They were tryin to flag a ride .
Yeah they were taken for a ride alright.
Whatever. Great song.
Prolly all the ones in the 27 club
9:29 me onstage when the high e breaks with a floyd rose:
❤❤❤❤
Been loving your videos lately Tyler. Thank you! Im gonna try your super system out. 🤘😎🎸
I even covered this song without even knowing it!
Just went by ear!!
It’s just the perfect song to plug n’ play!
That is what makes a great piece of music!
Very entertaining! I enjoyed it to the end. Nice work! Thanks for sharing
Nice job and some interesting ideas, thanks!
During my years on stage doing covers, this wasn't close to Mustang Sally. The added benefit was the floor immediately filled with lovely ladies. Ride, Sally Ride indeed.
Agree that Mustang Sally is definitely covered by bands more than any other song. Period. A close second would be Brown Eyed Girl. Those are the cover band staples.
Robert Johnson, his skill and the mythology, had a huge impact on Bob Dylan's transition from folk to rock.
Incredible video. You made my day bro,🎉❤
Something about unexpectedly seeing you and Corey Congilio in the same video just made my day.
"I don't require your soul, just 10 bucks" 🤣 soon, I'll sign up and pick up the guitar again!
Great video, really interesting.
Im from Drew Ms. about 25 minutes south of Clarksdale. The air is thick, the humidity is 150% (in summer), and the devil walks with you every step. That's why the blues was born there. For some folks mister devil is their only buddy. I believe the RJ Crossroads legend. Thanks as always for your great content.
High humidity is a hell on Earth.
Tyler this is awesome. :)
Hey, want to see more of your band playing out, do you have another channel where you post those??
The white crossover vehicle totally rolled through that STOP @9:05
Also, Busted!. I've been playing 40+ years and have never learned that universal song all guitarists know. (hangs head in shame, like that driver of the white crossover should)
Still beats Brown Eyed Girl or Sweet Home Alabama both of which were the bane of my bar band-playing existence.
Playing freebird, personally, has to be the worst
Our band leader send us a new set list he wants to do, and it includes Brown Eyed Girl. I think I might be out if that's the direction we want to go.
Wagon wheel would like to have a word.
@@mikeomatic9905 The bane of every bass player's existence is Brown Eyed Girl. At least if you learn Sweet Home Alabama you can use the same bass part for Werewolves of London....Two seventies rock staples for the price of one, I guess.
Yeah, then there’s like 1000 other songs that have the same progression as those songs.
The Joker, is like reverse Sweet Home, and it gets old quick, unless the band is cool about extending it a little. 😄
Cool Jams, thanks.
That 'crapton' slur at 02:23 cracked me up!
Really enjoyed this video! Great title 'hook'
Thanks brother!!
✌️❤️🎸
I’m 54 years, play blues and rock, have seen a zillion bands and blues jams. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone cover crossroads.
I am a 52 year old musician that has played in several cover bands. I am baffled that I have never even heard of this song until this video
There have been several movies about it. One for example is “Crossroads” starring Ralph Macchio as a guitar student and featuring Steve Vai as the Devils guitarist.
Haha! GREAT VID! Love the different versions of solo's part. 😄
What do you think is the most overplayed cover song in rock history?
It’s gotta be an AC/DC song or freebird.
I feel like it's "Brown Eye'd Girl"
Sweet child o' mine.
Yesterday
Free, All Right Now…
🤘😆🤘
In the UK we used to bury suicides/murderers (and suspected Vampires) at crossroads. Thinking was that the crossroad served to confuse the spirits and stop them from returning to thier village/town. A perfect place for the Devil to collect lost souls.
This is pretty funny.
I was in a cover band in the late 90's called Crossroads, and I bet you can't guess one of the songs we played in that band🤣
Eugenes trick bag? 😉lol
@@martinstrang1st174 You guessed it👍🤣
Absolutely love this vid. Also, your 335 is gorgeous.
In my experience, the most covered song is Mustang Sally followed very closely by brown eyed girl.
Let's not forget Big Yellow Taxi. It seems like everyone and his brother feels the need to cover that stupid song.
On Bass, doing a 2nd substitution - Playing B instead of E (or F#) is very nice. Works on the guitar part as well.
Th JohnMayer effect..... Great explanation!
Oh man, that Prs is beautiful that Tyler is playing... surprise surprise.😜👍
The "laid back feel" section has Sheryl Crow written all over it. 🤘
I love your song have heart, my favourite
Fun video. That ending tho 🫣
Fabulous. Instant tone change triggered on pedalboard, Right? The transition is so quick.
@@Te_legram_me_officeMusicIsWin Anything by blues artists. I'm basically a metalhead but the blues riffs will outlive us all.
This is great
My skiiiiin wohooooo 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Love the ending..😅
Best thing to request when a cover band asks if the audience has any requests: "Play an original song."
Great episode. :-)
I never heard of this song, ever. I was expecting you to say Wonderwall or Yesterday, but instead it's some random song I never heard of.
In the UK it feels like the most covered rock song ever is definitely Mr Brightside! Every band, in every bar, forever! 😂
is it wonderwall
I thought it was Wonder wall too! 😂 I never heard of this "crossroad" song.
3 of those samples were from the rock n roll hall of fame Rush all star jam
Clapton’s version is also a mashup with Traveling Riverside Blues.
I thought it would be revolution 9
I don't know if you've ever heard of Lex and Terry (it's a morning radio show) but they play the John Mayer version of this song as their outro every day. I've never actually heard it before (except the little bit they play on the show) and didn't know what it was until now. I only know it's John Mayer because they've mentioned it.
I admit that the Cream version is what got me wanting to play guitar cuz I wanted to play like young Clapton. Personally the definitive version.
They definitely went down to the crossroads
1.) Cowboys in late 1800s Southwestern United States when I'm disrespectful, as a newcomer in their local watering hole.
2.) Having to pee when I'm on an elevator.
@3:14 Beato!!
Had no idea this was the song when you mentioned the most OVERPLAYED song in rock history! First, because it's a blues song, second, it's a 1930's song/track! But it has been among my favourites for at least 2 decades, I love Roberts music and listen to it regularly
The story of how the crossroads myth came about is fascinating and instructive.
Edit: You'll have to find it out for yourselves though. I'm in a rush.
Believe it or not, I didn't know this song till today...
you may be going to the bad place for the "crapton" slip up 🤣
You had me at “Crapton…” 😝🤣. Or to loop in the “My drummer” comment… “Oh Crapton, My Crapton” ☮️❤️🎶
If you haven't heard "I Killed Robert Johnson" by The Stone Foxes you absolutely should....it's told from the perspective of the man who supposedly poisoned Robert's drink for flirting with his wife. Its a blast to play too; really fun main riff!
9:05 I see the California Roll has migrated west to Nashville.
Robert Johnson almost certainly had Marfans syndrome and most likely died from a thoracic aortic dissection , a painful thing which explains him “on the ground barking like a dog”.
His long fingers are typical of the arachnodactyly found in Marfans and Jo doubt helped his guitar dexterity.
According to the documentary “Devil At The Crossroads”, it was likely Johnson drinking a poisoned bottle of whiskey given to him by the husband of a woman Johnson was seeing that caused the thoracic aortic dissection. Not disputing the Marfans Syndrome thing, mind. There’s also a theory that both he and Paganini may have had Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome as well as Marfans, which could explain their abnormal amount of flexibility in their hands and fingers.
@@atraxuswraithe6031 What "poison" would do that ? The most effective and available poison to lace alcohol with is methanol, but that doesn't cause aortic dissection. A more sensible post-hoc medical analysis leads to the conclusion that it was a collagen disorder that would lead to a dissection, supported by the photo showing his fingers.
I don't know if I ever pictured the crossroads being such a busy intersection...
Proud Mary is the most played. I walk out within a couple of chords. Been listening to lazy bands cover it since the 90s
You rock Tyler. Im sorry someone threw a bottle at you, but man does it look tough 🤙 keep on rocking brother 🤙
was wondering where that goose egg came from...
Last time I looked it up, Hey Joe was more covered.
Crossroads IS high on the "how often covered" list though.
Where’d they go???
I guess "I went down to the crossroads, and took some guitar lessons from some guy", just does sound as catchy.
I highly recommend anyone reading these comments to check out the RUSH version of this song off their feedback album. Actually.... check out the whole album. ALL KILLER COVERS
You are never going to tire showing off that shiny, new purple guitar are you? And why would you? ;D
🤘🏻
I have been in cover bands for over thirty years and I've never played this song. I never even learned it!
You don't have to learn it, it's a straight twelve bar blues. Watch out for the ending though. A few bands play the "classical" IIm-V-I-I chord progression for the last four bars the way Robert Johnson did it himself, others use the more "modern" V-IV-I-I blues ending.
I like the RUSH version one of many.
It was overplayed until John Mayer pulled out his version.
That whole album is on the same level - the drums, the bass, the production...
Probably what made this exact song so nice to listen to as well - nevertheless, best version of all times.
Thanks to Cream, by the way, but their part in this was like 5% of the whole story in this :)
I was going for "We will, we will, rock you"
I don't know. I personally don't consider Oasis to be a rock band even though they are classified as such, but every single a-hole with an acoustic guitar plays Wonderwall.
Never heard it. You ever see that movie with the karate kid and some weird dude playing guitar? Its pretty sweet. Not sure why i thought of that. Play that song.
The octave Lines remind me of Summer Romance by Incubus
Guilty. However the version I played was based on the Jeff Berlin/Paul Gilbert version from 86.
I remember trying to find that album: Pump It and never could locate it, then the masters were destroyed in that fire a few years' ago, but at least more versions of it are online.
The Beatles landed on Ed Sullivan theatre, and a million boys started bands. Cream released Crossroads, and a million guitarists started to jam. It was all different from then on.
First song I thought it would be is Mustang Sally.
Do more forbidden riffs at the guitar store ❤❤
These days the go to is Superstition among the rock guitar players when they jam. Satch, Vai, Collen, etc.
I fell down on my knees . But we can still buy a house baby , by the Riverside .
6:43 Crossroads if it came out in 1995
Just for fun I so every now and then look for covers on you tube. Last time Motorhead's Ace of spades. I found every sort of music from a "rap" version to jazz and even a a banjo version.
Robert Johnson didn't sell his soul to The Devil. Stories say he disappeared for about 6 months and when he came back, he was awesome. Some people call that "Wood Shedding ".
Never ever heard of this song before
John Mayer laid down the best solo on this song when he did it live with Clapton in Bryant park
Goin' Down. Probably number one in the overplayed song list.
Agreed, even a one man band in a one horse town with a wooden leg probably also covers Sweet Caroline.
Don't get ran over out there in the street...We need more content like this...
I don't know, maybe in US. I never learned that song nore heard anybody playing it around in all my years :)
In my youth, I remember a concert with a couple of band playing, we played Knocking on the heaven's door (guns version) and ear 2 other bands cover it after us... that was pretty funny and unfortunate.
Mayer does exactly the same think Knopfler did back when he was in Clapton’s band
ive been a musician for like 15 years give or take and i have never heard this song in my life, should i be worried about that?
Then you haven't heard of Cream either, which is frankly, unforgivable.
@@MongoHongos of course ive heard of cream, never got around to listening to them beyond white room *shrug*
turns out theres a fuck load of music in the world
Little wing by jimi hendrix is also the most cover song in guitar history
I went down to the crossroads, and all I got was a few lousy coins thrown into my guitar case.😡
Too funny, I’ve only not played this tune in the band im currently travelling with.
Maybe they went down and Old Luci spit them back, again Tyler thanks for another fun vid
I see you removed the Bigsby from your 335 .
I suddenly feel the need to go down to the crossroads 😂😂😂😂
love clapton's new name, craptoan
If you've ever been to a Blues jam or ran one, Tracy Chapman's "Gimmie One Reason" is also overplayed.
I have never played Crossroads, and live in person have only heard it played by Clapton
But it seems like an easy song to swap solos on
