    This is the honest review of the Trijicon RCR Closed Emitter Red Dot. The new Trijicon RCR was problem free and didn't have any issues. For a pistol optic, the RCR is among the best, but is it worth it? Should you buy the Trijicon RCR for home defense, self defense or concealed carry? Watch today's review from Nightwood Guns to find out!
    For my RUclips manual reviewer: I am a certified instructor and range safety officer. This was safely filmed at a private range. This is an unmodified semi-automatic pistol in its factory configuration handled by a professional. For the love of god I'm following your rules. I went from being just a sub to being a real fan of yours after your last live stream Q&A. Surprisingly, I watched a good majority of it, and it was great to hear your thoughts on the gun and guntuber industries. Just ordered my RCR and while I haven't got it yet, I will say from everything I have read and heard the optic, outside of it's price, is by far the best "duty grade" optic. 509T is second and the Acro and Steiner are tied for third. The things I hate about the lower 3 are the necessity for optics plates (which I don't like), or they require a cut that most firearm machine shops usually don't offer. When buying optics you have to factor in the cost of the cuts as well. The $645 price tag is pretty much washed out with slides already setup for RMRs compared to adding $50-$100 for an adapter.

    The issues I see with the RCR is the mounting (both the incompatibility with certain optic cuts and the weird mounting), the deck height is pretty high, and it’s very expensive. It seems like a solid offering, but I can get a holosun EPS, 509, or a lead and steel PB3 for far less.

    Question: How many have a closed emitter mounted on their pistol whose seal has failed?
    It seems like the failure mode of an open emitter (something gets on the emitter) is much easier to recover from than the failure mode of the enclosed emitter (seal failure) which requires a trip back to the manufacturer for repair. Tell me if I'm wrong?

    • @NightwoodGuns
      @NightwoodGuns  5 месяцев назад +2

      You are 100% right. I’ve personally never had the seal fail but I saw it happen on the first run of 509Ts and it seems to still be happening with ACROs. I don’t think it’s happened to anyone yet on an RCR and I haven’t seen it happen on an EPS. But as long as the seal is good, it is superior in that environment to an open emitter.

    I have one of these and a couple RMRs, along with a couple Holosuns. I try to put my Trijicons on guns that see more holster use and Holosuns on everything else, including my dedicated home defense set-up. I think both have their use cases….Trijicons are just bomb proof, but have pretty mediocre glass and limited feature sets. Holosuns are great optics for guns that don’t leave my house except for range days. Less expensive, more and better features, and I personally think the glass is clearer and I prefer the green dot.

    Buy once cry once. Buying trijicon, Aimpoint, eotech, etc. is never a waste of money, you probably won’t ever need another sight for life, and if you want your money back sell it for what you paid if you bought it at a discount, or at most you’ll lose very little money on it. On the contrary, Holosuns and other cheap sights have a horrible secondhand value, and good luck keeping them working for years of regular use. At the end of the day I see the people that buy Olights, Holosuns, etc. spend more money in the long run.

    • @NightwoodGuns
      @NightwoodGuns  5 месяцев назад +1

      You are 100% on about second hand value. For a while at least. RMRs go for cheap used nowadays. But Holosuns aren’t what they used to be. They’ve significantly stepped up their game and are way out of Olight’s league. Trijicon is certainly higher quality though, I just think most end users will see diminishing returns in their investment.

    Funny. I found an RCR at my local shop and I initially went to buy it. What stopped me was the weird way that you can’t mount it to a specific torque spec. The window also was a tad bit smaller than the Holosun 509T that I initially planned on replacing it with. For me: the extra cost isn’t really bringing anything new to the table. Unlike the RMR HD; idk why this doesn’t have the light sensor. Smh. That kinda frustrates me. Theeeeeeeeeen the price didn’t seem viable for me. Made in America is awesome but 80% or more of consumer electronics are made in china. So before yall try to crucify me in the comments… chill out. I’m not rich but I’m not poor either. I carry a PDP Match Steel Frame as my EDC. You can Google that and get back to me 😂

    Slightly off topic but: I've been shooting irons for over 20 years. I'm ok, requalify every year for work but I'm nothing special. Moved into red dots a couple years ago. I'm finding that (probably because I've shot irons so long) the co-witnessing sights is just distracting me.
    I'm seriously considering taking the irons completely off my range gun for training purposes. Does anyone EDC w/o irons? Because I could see that being a thing in a few years as RDOs get better and even more reliable.
    Depending on how my experiment goes, I might do it.

    Love tijicon. Ran rmrs and sros. But i dont like the allen key mounting for the hd. Wouldve rather them just adopt the acro footprint for the closed emmiter design for the hd and their closed emitters in the future. Open emmiters, rmr footprint, closed emmiters, acro.

    So I have not handled this optic or had it on a firearm or anything like that yet, but for the steep price, I see plenty of other optics that would take the place of this, and have more options available. And if you’re looking for a closed emitter, the acro P2 from everything I’ve heard in this video and other videos Would be more ideal and more features for a lot of people. It sounds to me like Trijicon it’s just trying to get as much money as they can out of people. Also, the fact that it’s been out as long as it has, and people are just finally starting to get them regularly, is a turn off for me. the mounting system and the fact that the mounting system is not guaranteed on all foot prints from RMR’s etc. puts me in the negative zone for this optic at least for right now!

It's a stupid reason to spend so much on Trijicon, but I've got 4 of them already! However, as my collection grows, like you, I need to throw dots on everything. And I’ve been meaning to bring my wife on the channel to talk about her perspectives. Just hesitant because of creeps. But she also struggles with on-body carry and when we’re together she opts for off-body carry (in conjunction with husband-carry 😂) When she’s on her own she’s been running the Comfort Concealment belt with a holster/DCC Clips. She was able to find a sweet spot that isn’t too uncomfortable, but concealment is a struggle in summer months. She’s going to try the Flashbang next. Once she finds something she’s 100% happy with, I’ll bring her on to talk about it 👍 Just know that you aren’t alone in the on-body struggle. One last thing I would like to add. I do like American made things and I do believe things should be made in America or at least more things should be. I think it should be politicians that change laws whatever they need to do to bring work back to America, including on intricate things like these red dots. However, I am almost 50 years old and from my experience in firearms, watches, cameras, knives and even some cell phones, foreign made products are usually better quality and better made with better parts and longer lasting materials compared to American made stuff. That’s just my experience, especially in Knives watches in Firearms so if America wants people to buy American made stuff they need to do a better job and make better quality things, even if it cost more.
