Prisoners going through checkpoints get automatically searched as they pass through. It counts as a search and will affect your prison temperature so don't spam them everywhere. Someone's already mentioned metal detectors. Use those strategically as well. You need to place them in locations where prisoners can't find a route round them (like using a different corridor or taking a shortcut through a room). I like to use a few pieces of wall at the side of them so prisoners can't slip through them diagonally (try a prison that doesn't do this in escape mode to see how easy it is to avoid badly planned detectors).
