ATTN: During the ASK AN AMP TECH segment, I was asked about where to tie the shield of the input cable on the AO-35 conversion amp. My answer was less clear than it should have been. I was confused in thinking the guy was asking which triode he should tie the input to, but he was asking which PLATE to tie the SHIELDING of the input wire to. Normally the shielding wire is tied to GROUND, not to a high voltage PLATE; however, during this build, I was experimenting with something I'd read that suggested using a HV source as a shield, rather than ground. For safety's sake, DO NOT use the tube PLATE as a shield, unless you're doing so at your own risk. In my case, yes, the results are a very quiet input signal, but of course there is more danger involved having HV so close to your guitar strings like that. So again, ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

The photo you brought up near the end was a band called the Ladybirds. They started about 1966 and performed topless. Not to be confused with a Danish band of the same name who also performed topless in roughly the same time period but had a lot more blonde.

Playing close to 50 years. Spent well over $100k but I've flipped a lot of gear and usually come out on top. Probably made more $$$ trading gear in the last 30 years than I did playing shit gigs for 15 years! Almost never spent over $500 for a guitar or amp until the last decade, and still haven't paid over a grand on one instrument, and I've had about every good brand except Martin. Sold some for over 1k though. Never worked retail, just traded locally in trade papers until eBay. Made great money off the pawnshops around here from the early 90s into the 2000s, and the pawnshops became Internet aware. Then the 2008 recession hit, and I've been sitting on a lot of gear for over a decade! I'm about to bust loose and sell a bunch of stuff from the 60s to 90s!

For what it's worth, I've experimented a good bit with the 'high voltage shield' method. I believe it evolved from the fact that a positive DC source is also an AC ground and perhaps is in a 'convenient' location on a 9-pin preamp tube. I have seriously good ears and am regarded as a tone snob by fellow guitarists, and I can tell you I can't hear *any* difference, gain improvement, or other tonal improvement between this method and hooking the shield to a good ground- note: *good* ground. So you are risking potentially lethal voltage going straight to your guitar strings with the high voltage shield method and if you've got a standard 68k resistor in series, you won't likely trip a ground fault interrupter- which means none of the fuses or other protection means will save you. So don't do it folks. It's all risk for nothing.

The "Gerald Ford" If I remember correctly. None of the elevators that are supposed to bring planes and/or ammunition up from below decks are working properly. So, if we think Gibson is stupid and wasteful, the military is much worse.

Speculation is that it was actually a bull shark because one of the attacks took place well upstream in a muddy swimming hole attached to a tidal river where it was pretty much fresh water, and bull sharks have a high tolerance for fresh water.

Just a note on the fuse plug holder the guy mentioned about on the Marshall amp. Over in the UK, the plug that goes into the actual wall sockets has a 13 amp buss type fuse in it. Every plug over here uses a fuse at the plug, be it anywhere from 3 amp to 13. This is for what is called a ring circuit. As the wires in the actual plug cord rated well below the normal main circuit breaker of 20 amps. I have seen them blow, have failed in understanding why they blew unless it was caused by some sort of current spike because everything seems to be fine after replacing. A simple lamp circuit as an example, you have a 40w incandescent bulb that has been fused with 3 amps in the plug. You do continuity test and ohms test, nothing wrong with any of it. You blow the fuse, replacement of the fuse was all that was needed. Very strange stuff man.

I would estimate that I have easily spent probably $20,000 (in my lifetime thus far) on lessons, guitars, recording gear, other equipment and there is more to come like a Kemper stage and a couple more guitars and even more lessons. I'm not young but I can't think of a better way to spend my money and feel good about my situation.

Spending on guitars, hmmm bought my first elec in '79 a real Fender Tele $150
(girlfriend was unhappy i spent the money broke up with me, I traded it for a Hohner acoustic i had for years was great)
Bought my first LesPaul a real Gibson in '80 for $375 at Freedom guitars in SanDiego
(I had no idea wtf to do with an elec guitar sold it and left town to chase a girl)
Bought my second and well almost last Gibson Les Paul in '81 for $350
( played that thing for years until i tricked myself into trading up for a custom guitar, the LP was really heavy)
found an Alvarez Tele/Strat style in a used shop in the late 90's, a good friend Larry Brooks was living in town and doing repairs( um yea that Larry Brooks) that day before I bought it I asked why is this cheap guitar so good, it played and sounded great! he said you know 10k guitars come off the line in Korea, one or two are really great (oh and the best guitar builder in the land set it up). um yea $175 for that one
(I just gave that guitar to a friend to play , yep gave it)
I like that Alvarez so well I started looking for another, tough to find, but with the internet starting to have used guitar warehouses selling I found a real Stratstyle Alvarez in Kentucky, yep , $70 uh huh, $85 with shipping, got here I adjusted the truss rod for fun, finest guitar I ever played, just sweet and unbelievable tones, took me a few years to even find another one for $225 for a stage back up.
What is not really really talked about with guitars that regular folks can afford is the role that local luthiers play in having anything worth a darn, I am very fortunate to have one of the best in the world live 10 minutes away.
It was interesting to hear you talk to Carvin's son, and then Dean is actually a good friend of good friends of mine, but those guys deliver guitars ready to play, set up and ready, imagine that mr. Gibson , $5k for a LP in MusiciansFriend.
I will finish with this, my roommate a couple summers ago was into those Chinese kits you could buy, and was trying some Tele's messing with finishes and wiring, one day he is showing me the website and there is a guitar on the side, an Les Paul with no headstock shown, it was beautiful for $225, WTF i sad well for that I can check it out, (I had no idea about the whole Chibson scene) so i ordered it, you can imagine my utter shock to open the box and find a perfect Gibson copy, well mostly, after a visit to the tech it plays like butter, I didn't even change out anything, wtf for the cheap stuff worked fine for someone who can actually play. I asked my tech about it cause I was dumbfounded, he said yeah Gibson gave the specs to the Epiphone guys who actually make Gibson guitars, ( oh yeah that's right that's a secret, Gibson's are all made in China) anyway once the had the CNC specs, somebody just pushes a button and out pops a guitar, if you don't know about CNC, well if you got the right one you can make space shuttle parts or a replacement heart for your mother, that's how accurate they are.
Anyway I digress, as far as spending $10k in your lifetime, I got kids, I ain't had or never will have $10k to buy guitars, that's why I am glad cheap guitars can be made to work, hell I went to the Keisel site to support them because the goldtopish single cutaway is fucking gorgeous, but I don't have $1500 to spend on a guitar. Anyway it is a nice daydream that guy at Fender is having. peace In the MiddleEast Brad. ;-)

Why? Because they are trying to protect what is theirs? The bigger picture here is why do these American companies keep losing these kind of court cases in the EU? I believe it is because the EU is trying to protect guitar companies based in the EU and by removing the threats of being sued by Gibson and Fender and PRS, those smaller companies can prosper and make the EU more money. This issue is now becoming more of a political issue than just one guitar company being a jerk.

The Flying V has been built by countless companies, large and small and everything in-between, in the style of the Gibson (as opposed to the, "pointy," more aggressive, more metalized V shapes) since the time of the first builds. So I can definitely see the obvious logic in denying the trademark that wasn't filed, nor actively defended, for decades.
The Firebird shape is less of a commonly built shape by other builders, but again, they didn't file, nor did they actively protect, the trademark of the body shape. Focus on building high quality instruments, using the best materials, utilizing sustainable practices, and being a good corporate citizen. Otherwise the younger generations will leave them behind. Many people of all ages have been so irritated and bothered by Gibson's decisions and practices that Gibson has already been left behind.

Gibson can’t go out of business soon enough IMO. There are way too many new guitars being made and enough good used guitars for every guitar player to own a dozen at least. How disrespectful to the heritage of a once top class company and employees past and present. I worked for an international chocolate manufacturer for 36 years, and when they closed the factory where I live(in the UK) they opened a museum where they placed every thing from old machinery to all the memorabilia they could find, to preserve the legacy and respect for all past and present employees. FYI!
Any time there is a DSL100 on the service bench, check the 16 ohm output jack. Look to see if the ground contact looks as though it has become hot at some time. If so, it will look darker than the rest. Even if it isn't dark, plug into a 4 or 8 ohm output and gently poke the ground contact on the 16 ohm jack. If the output crackles or sounds like static, replace the jack. The 16 ohm jack cuts out the 4 and 8 ohm jacks when the 16 is used. If the contact goes bad, it can cut out, blow output tubes and stress the rest of the output section.

My sister used to live in ( rent) an upper floor of a 3 story house in Providence Rhode Island that was formerly owned by a couple that were friends with numerous bands and apparently were promoters of many of the local night club shows. The basement wall in this house had hundreds of signatures from various musicians, lots of blues and blues-rock players in particular apparently stayed there in the basement of the house rather than having to pay a hotel bill. If memory serves me correctly, folks like James Cotton and James Montgomery and Freebo, Taj Mahal and the members of NRBQ and other blues-rock players in particular had autographed the wall. It was a concrete or stone foundation wall as I recall, but this was a long time ago and I don't know if it might have been painted over by now. I hope not!

I am a Memphis musician, and on my way to a regular gig I had at Rum Boogie Cafe on Beale St., I would always walk past the Gibson factory and look in the windows. It's strange to think that the people these instruments were created for, in a city literally KNOWN for it's music and musicians, pass right on by the factory doors KNOWING there's no way to afford one of their instruments. Having said that, even if I'd had the opportunity I would have just kept walking and bought a Taylor instead, BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT DAMNIT!! Lol I did manage to play a show for a local radio station in the Gibson "lounge", which ironically enough was the WORST gig of my life.

Just a thought for you guys wanting to get away from your Gibson purchases...In 1963/64, John lennon was quoted out of context, deliberately, when the Beatles arrived at Cleveland/Hopkins Airport, early sunday morning. While most families would've been at sunday church/mass at that same time, in that era, 4,000 ppl, mostly young girls, showed up and screamed for them as they debarked the plane from New York, to play Cleveland Browns Stadium. The mis-quote was: "They'd much rather come see us than go see God!" It made Headlines in alot of big city newspapers across the nation from that!! I was enrolled in Catholic grade school, at that time, about 7-8 yrs old. The next day, one of my grade school buddies (who was a big Beatles fan) told me about ppl getting together to burn all their Beatles records, dolls, lapel pins, magazines, rareties and ect., at a big bonfire, being organized by one of the AM Radio Stations in town, rallying everyone to join in and burn memorabilia, which kind of went on for weeks, after. I asked him if he had lost his mind. He looked at me as if I had lost mine, saying the Beatles and their junk had no right to be near God loving ppl! I said, "My old man would throw me into the fire as well, if I burned what he had worked hard to earn the money to buy that stuff, even tho I had earned the money doing chores, ect...!!" Then, years later, as the Beatles got so enormously popular, everyone forgot about all of that!!
    Do yourselves a favor...
Things and events have a way of going in cycles, turns, aboutfaces, turnabouts, ect...
And if you STILL really, really really can't abide the Gibson "lack of heritage" thing going on in this current group of beancounters, then,
I will buy all your no longer loved Gibson Guitars, Amps, Devices and Accessories!!
Of course, I will offer pennies on the dollar...
I mean, they've lost all their credibility, right?
It all disgusts you and need to get it out of your sight, RIGHT??!!!

I'd visited and toured the Memphis factory just after the two new guy's bought the Gibson company. I shocked, rattled & made the tour guide stutter (a craftsman take turns being a tour guide, I'm told) when I asked about the Bankruptcy. There was another question I asked and I can't remember now. He said he'd talk to me after the tour. He didn't stop freely and I had to about chase him down. He explained, the new guys and how the employee's were all excited. Things they were going to stop doing that was loosing money (a lot of electronic things). Honestly I don't remember him telling me they were closing the factory. Perhaps he did. Oh the other question they were packing up a literally a ton of grand pianos. I forget the brand. They had been sharing warehouse space and were moving out. Guess I was getting one of the last tours they made. OH AND I'VE SPENT IN 50+ YEARS WAY MORE THAN 10 GRAND AND HAVE SPENT NEARLY A GRAND IN THE LAST MONTH

PS, pricing example...I had a Valley Arts Strat made for me at the California location in 1983, before the fire and their subsequent move to Nashville. At that time, they were using Warmouth necks and bodies. I asked them to install a Kahler along with Seymour Duncan pickups (HSS), and custom paint. Serial number: 98. Price with case: $1,300. It is still a great guitar, but has not increased in value.
