  • Jan Kalivoda (Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda) - Concertino for oboe in F major, Op. 110
Diana Doherty (oboe), Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Werner Andreas Albert (conductor)
The Bohemian composer Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda (born and trained in Prague) spent much of his life in the service of the ruling prince in Donaueschingen. Donaueschingen was already known as one of the most cultured capitals among the many German states and Kalliwoda elevated its musical life to rank with the finest in Germany, residing there most of the rest of his life. He was capable of considerable inventive power, with fresh melodies and well-executed counterpoint, with truly inspired ideas in his orchestration. His music was widely played during his lifetime.
Kalliwoda was a prolific composer. His published works run to 243 opus numbers and there were nearly 50 others without opus numbers. He left at least that amount of music in manuscript form.

Kallivoda is an underrated composer. For sure, the does not reach the heights of Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann. Nevertheless, his music is very well written, his invention is rich and varied. This concerto for oboe and orchestra is quite nice.

      Thank you for comment.
You are right, but if we, the listeners, continue to listen to his music, perhaps we will show that our opinion also matters, not only the opinion of the musical critics.

For sure. RUclips is a way to bypass the musical critics and programme organizers and to express a voice of our own. Cheers.

I "discovered" Diana Doherty in 2005-2006 with her album Romantic Oboe Concertos (Molique, Kalliwoda, Hummel, Rietz, Bellini). I fell in love for good! 🙂

Why went the oboe out of style as a solo instrument during the romantic era? It is such a pleasant sound to hear!

I'm not a specialist in music hystory, but I think the oboe (slightly different to modern oboe) existed long before the classical era, and it was a musical instrument that was very successful. Let us remember only a few composers who wrote wonderful concertos for oboe or other musical genres in which the oboe was heavily used: Albinoni, Handel, Telemann, Bach, Marcello, Vivaldi, Quantz, Haydn, Zelenka, Salieri, Stamitz, Rosetti, von Dittersdorf, Kozeluch, Hummel, Bellini, Lebrun ... I have written these names at random .... but I do not forget Domenico Zipoli (I listen to his Adagio quite often and I like it very, very much).
I also think that the musical tastes are the ones that have changed and that's why the composers of Romantic period composed less oboe concertos and we listen to less music for oboe. I only suppose... But maybe a musician will read our questions and supposition, and he'll explain us about this subject.

sibarit101 I hope that muscian will come some day. My personal favorite oboe concerto is Besozzi's concerto in C major. It is very delicate and virtuosic, yet it is balanced and melodious.

During the Romantic era, so much Virtuoso music has been written ... so many instruments have been put "out of style".... But this is definetely the most "paganinian" Romantic oboe concerto, with a beautiful fusion of virtuosism, musicality and, last but not least, a nice orchestra score, too.
There are many "Romantic Oboe Concertos" CD with the same program: Kalliwoda, Bellini, Rietz and Molique, but Mrs Doherty''s recording is one of the best
But If you want to hear what you can do with an oboe, just listen to Pasculli's oboe works based on Opera's themes or Theodore Lalliet variations on "Venice Carnaval" ...but just sit down before you start listen ! :)
