These are such great tutorials! Thanks so much. :) Also, your cakes are BEAUTIFUL. Wish you were closer to Denver so I could buy your cakes instead of trying to replicate them!
Hi Whitney, thank you for your videos! Question: do you find it necessary, when putting the cake in the fridge to chill during it's crumbcoat time, to also put the buttercream in the fridge as well during that time?? Or can you you leave the buttercream out during the time while the cake's crumbcoat is chilling?
Hi Matt! When chilling the crumb coated cake, I usually leave the remaining buttercream out at room temperature, covered with a towel. If you're planning on chilling the cake for more than 30 minutes I recommend storing the buttercream in the refrigerator overnight before bringing it back to room temperature and mixing it on low for a minute or so before using it to frost the cake. Hope that helps!
Before doing the crumb coat, do you put your cake in the fridge for a little while after it's cooled, or do you start as soon as it's cooled down from the oven?
If you're in a hurry, can you chill the cake in the freezer? If so, for how long? I once did it for 15 minutes and my 2nd buttercream coat set too quickly that I couldn't spread it easily
Hi Fatima! I have never tried freezing a cake to speed up the process before, but you are welcome to try it. If 15 minutes was too long last time see how it is after 5-10 minutes.
Oh no! If your cake fell apart while you were crumb coating the frosting consistency is probably too stiff. Try thinning out the frosting next time by adding a little more room temp milk, 1 tsp at a time, until the frosting is more spreadable.
Thank you so much for this video!! I don't know why but my brain needed to hear "it's used to trap the crumbs into the thing layer of frosting".
