In the last of three exclusive Coaches’ Voice Masterclasses, Casey Stoney looks back on a 3-0 victory for her then Manchester United team against Everton in the 2018 FA Women’s League Cup.
Just a few months after they were founded, and still playing their football in the second tier of English football, the fixture offered Stoney’s side the chance to test themselves against WSL opposition. Here, Stoney reveals the tactical approach that saw United overpower Everton, scoring three unanswered goals in the first half.
She explains how her team set up out of possession to apply intense pressure on the opposition’s centre-backs and how, when in possession, they looked for chances to cross or to harness the 1v1 attacking ability of centre-forward Lauren James.
It’s a fascinating insight from United’s first manager, who has since gone on to manage San Diego Wave in the NWSL.

What I like about this trainer is that she actually points out the individual attributes of the players and their contributions to the teams wins. Sometimes, coaches address their tactics only from a general team point of view. But it's individuals who play their role within the context of the team that makes the difference. And realizing as a coach who best fits that role and why is what separates coaches. As well as being able to make quick adjustments of course

Would love to listen to more women coaches like Eileen Gleeson, Carla Ward, Kelly Smith (although she is only assistant coach for now), Emma Hayes ( although she is quite busy these days), Pia Sundhage, Sarina Wiegman 🤩 would be amazing

Wow...that is one reason why I love women. It takes a lot for here to be at this level so she of cource turned out to be a good teacher.
