It shows actually the herd mentality, and lack of knowledge and experience. This show has a lot of moments where there is a balance of learning, show expertise and executing under time restraint pressure.

@@jacomananzan312 There's season 6, for one. The final two could have gone either way and both deserve it. Same with seasons 18-20.
You can also watch season 10, but you'll have to endure the drama (not saying which team to avoid spoilers).
I'd say avoid season 9 (wrong person won, in my opinion, and it has one of the most arrogant contestants in history), season 13 (boring), and season 15 (also boring).

There’s also a hilarious prank in season 20 where Gordon and two inspectors pretend to discover drugs in the dorms and confronts the two finalists, asking them who it belongs to. Then, they open the packages up and it’s just their chef jackets.

Dude, the finalists were both so scared. They were both trying not to blame each other while making sure they made it clear that they knew nothing about the drugs. The first prank just shows how subjective food is, what is amazing to someone might be disgusting for others. Which is why competitions about food are so difficult to do objectively.

I love Keith on that first one. I think Heather and probably some others knew something was up but didn't want to insult Chef. Keith looks like he probably was taken in but also just..... likes that food and owns it. That's fine! I'm no food snob, I'm sure that what Gordon and any of these chefs can put out blows this stuff out of the water, but that doesn't mean these staple basics don't taste good. It's the difference between comfort food and "food as an experience", but people can enjoy both.
Gordon has just shown us now that you don't have to go above and beyond for a great meal, you don't have to spend so much money on restaurants the world has to offer you

To be fair, when it comes to the first dish, there is a ton of psychology behind how things taste, it depends on who is serving you, how it’s arranged, and your own personal biases just as much as it depends on the ingredients, likely more even.
It's the placebo effect, the conditions of the experience affect the way patients react

i think the first prank should have been framed differently. It seems as if they were all under the impression that Gordon himself cooked the food, therefore they didn't want to say it was shit because they didn't want to insult Gordon, or that because Gordon himself cooked it then that's the way that those dishes are supposed to taste (as in they are cooked perfectly because Gordon cooked it)
The contestants should have been told that Gordon did not cook the food, or at the very least that each of those dishes came from highly rated local restaurants and they are supposed to give their honest opinion.
