I think if they wanted to run with the theme of celebrating 100 years of animation, it would have been cooler to make the movie fully 2D to pay homage to where the company started. A lot of Disney fans have been asking for 2D animation again so it would've been a great opportunity. This style isn't bad but it does look stiff at some points.

I think they're kinda worried about "looking back," so to speak. When I was growing up, Disney got heat for not being original enough, and I could see them going back to 2D and people saying they backtracked/ran out of ideas.

@@missmadyreads I do love 2D as much as 3D, though! I always hoped we'd get a Japanese-inspired Disney musical with Hayao Miyazaki directing it. 2D would be perfect for it--then again, I'd be cool with 3D since I've never seen a good 3D anime but western CGI is usually great.

I remember when reps from Disney came to my university to talk about The Princess and the Frog. They had plans to continue making traditional animated films. And while the movie made money, I don't think it made Lion King money that they were hoping for.
When Glen Keane was the original director of Tangled, he wanted the whole project to be 2D because he always preferred that style.

It's not just the animation itself, the colours look weirdly dulled down as well. If Disney actually cared about their anniversary, they would have gone for the hand-drawn style with loud musical numbers and dramatic villains. But clearly they don't, as usual, they just want to make a quick cash grab and use the whole 'Anniversary' thing as a marketing ploy. This sounds very pessimistic but the studio hasn't given me any reason to believe or care about their projects for years

Exactly!! Disney movies don't feel like Disney movies anymore because they don't have as much effort put in as they used to.
Not to mention recently they've just tried to make everything political and woke with diversity which feels very forced which isn't what an animated movie should be.
(I love diversity but it should make sense and shouldn't feel forced,
For example; if a movie was set in medieval Norway, there wouldn't be any African people because back then it was a homogeneous country etc)
(This is my opinion as an African)

@@jonal5126 and I hate this so much. Asha looks so much like Isabela, having the same color palette, a very similar silhouette and the same proportions. Old Disney films had very distinct princesses, like you couldn't mistake Snow White for Mulan (or Ariel, if you wanna go with the same race) because they had different silhoettes and art styles (and I'm talking stylization, not just the style the film is animated in). Now every girl looks like Rapunzel but in a different pallette.
And also, back in the early 2000's, Barbie used to have these 3D animated films, they weren't the best animation wise and hte budgets weren't big, but most of the old ones used classical music and retold classic ballet stories. So they had The Nutcracker and Swan Lake and they wanted to finish off the trilogy with Sleeping Beauty but then Disney didn't allow them because apparently having a blonde girl in a pink dress would be too confusing for kids. And now we have Asha and Isabella. (Yes I know you don't own color palettes and all, I'm just saying it's a shitty excuse)

They tried to do a stylized Spiderverse aesthetic but half-assed it. Its like they wanted to shake things up but not too much less it offend some of their audience. So instead its like a weird hybrid look that pleases no one and actually makes the film appear unfinished. Coming off the heels of ATSV and the new TMNT, which were ridiculously innovative in their art direction, it feels positively quaint.
Disney rested on their laurels for too long, allowing the studio which made the freaking emoji movie to step up their game and take the medium to its next level. They may be celebrating a milestone anniversary but no ones excited for the bland, watered down product theyre putting out anymore. 2023 is Sony's time to shine; they beat the mouse at his own game and I think many of us are happy to see them humbled for a change.

I thought the same thing. They tried to do something similar to “Spiderverse”, but failed. “Puss in Boots 2” did a great job combining animation, pacing and style from both “Shrek” and “Spiderverse”, but Disney was probably more focused with pumping out their next generic money maker, that they didn’t really care about the quality which is why “Spiderverse” was so well received. Low-quality just makes the film look choppy and unwatchable, and ultimately cheap.

Greetings. This is the mastermind of the campaign which transpired 5 years ago during Into The Spiderverse's release and which started Disney and Pixar's downfall during Ralph 2's flop. These 5 years of war against Disney and Pixar are bearing fruit after the quiet years of anime destroying Disney and Pixar since 1986 onwards (Castle In The Sky outperforming and outliving Luxo JR and The Great Mouse Detective), 1988 onwards (Akira outperforming and outliving Oliver and Company), 1995 onwards (Ghost In The Shell and Evangelion outperforming and outliving Pocahontas and Toy Story), 2001 onwards (Spirited Away outperforming and outliving Monsters Inc and Atlantis) and 2016 onwards (Your Name outperforming and outliving Moana, Finding Dory and Zootopia). We would like to thank Chris Miller, Phil Lord, Guillermo Del Toro, Christopher Nolan, Makoto Shinkai, Hayao Miyazaki, the fanbase and the production teams of their films for making this war possible. The call for holy terrorism against Disney, Pixar and Barbie and the high bounty on the heads of Bob Iger and Greta Gerwig are still in effect. Now that Elemental, Kraken and Barbie are successfully done for by supporters of this cause, give the final blow by destroying Wish and make Disney and Pixar permanently shutdown on their 100th anniversary for not evolving their storytelling and character development. Let it be known that the cinema industry is changing so make sure nothing gets in the way of the cinema war of the decade.❤💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣

It looks incredibly cheap. There is no exaggeration or caricature or stretching and squashing. Yes, theres a little bit but it's so subdued. Disney company should feel embarrassed. This is what they consider high enough quality for 100th anniversary? A studio known for hand drawn fluid caricatured unique style per film featured animation? The Disney Renaissance alone had more diverse animation styles. The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, Tarzan. They all had very distinct styles and character designs. If you took a character from any one of those movies and placed them in another one of those movies, they would feel out of place with the other characters and the backgrounds. If you plop Anna and Elsa in Tangled, or placed Moana in Encanto, they would blend in seamlessly. And that's not necessarily a good thing.

I'm in the same boat. Watching the trailer yesterday morning, I found I was actually less impressed with the trailer. It looks unfinished in some spots, and I think that's because of this style they're doing. Like good on them to mix it up, but it feels like they aren't pushing the style enough, that this is something like a very light experimentation or a cautious exploration and they're just toeing the water instead of diving in. And because it's a itty bitty ripple they're making in the water, I don't want to dive into the film and immerse myself.
Hearing that they also went 2D with this film, I wish they did. I think it would look better if it went full 2D, and it'd be a nice way to shake up their usual style by delving back into 2D. I also just do miss western 2D animation. I am biased for the return to it. Sadly we're not there yet.

You can make the argument that Disney is finally trying the “spider verse” animation style, but I don’t think that’s the case. The “spider verse” animation isn’t just cgi looking 2d and 3d at the same time, it’s more stylistic in different ways. Like how Spider verse and TMNT (the recent one) look like a comic book and how the animation is used, especially in an action scene or such, frames drop and look like something you’d see in a comic. Same with PIB the last wish. Where it looks like a fairy tale and also used dropped frames and is very colorful with everything, especially the background.
Wish though, it looks like Disney is being lazy to where the movie could be animated the usual way Disney animation animates their other movies, and nothing would change. But maybe this movie will surprise everyone. We’ll just have to see

They also experimented with different art styles which helped make the movies feel so refreshing and distance themselves from previous animated movies, their animation choices also made sense and there was a nice balance between the characters and the background. I understand that Disney is trying to bring that magic back to their movies and trying to create something new, but you can't just slap a thin darker outline on the same 3D models and keep the same animation style and call it new and innovative. It's the compression rate on social media that is crunching down the quality of the video. The film actually looks REALLY good on the big screen. It looks like a 2D filter they overlayed on top of their normal animation, which leads it to look half-baked and unfinished. I know that’s probably not what happened, but that’s the vibe I get from it

I will say this though, when I went to see Elemental in cinemas and saw Wish's teaser on the big screen the animation looked phenomenal. You could see every single line and even what looked like film grain in some shots.

It actually looks worse due to youtube's compresion. The actual shots are much more detailed and lively, but the only problem I have is the dull colors. I think it should use the colors to more so set the mood, using duller colors whenever somebody like the king is around with sparks of neon green, but vivid and saturated colors whenever the main character is on screen.

I have seen films and shows that cleverly combine 2D and 3D animation. Films and shows that seem to strike a good balance and make you wonder whether it emulates 2D or 3D animation more. Unfortunately, the characters in "Wish" just seem like they're 90% 3D and 10% 2D. *edit:* you brought up Paperman as an example of blended animation done well and I couldn't agree more.

Yeah, literally my first thought when seeing the trailer was "oh they're scared" like they clearly want to make something stylized but they're too afraid to go for it, it just feels very very cautious

The biggest problem is that it looks unfinished. They're trying to be like Arcane or Spiderman into The Spiderverse, but they're not implementing what makes those animations look like drawings.
I'm sure the movie is good, but they're too implemented in the 'disney style' that they wont adjust

I'm not really surprised to learn that Disney were almost going to make it fully 2D before they copped out. That explained some things.

So the new trailer made me actually excited for the movie. It looks kinda generic but I actually love the art style. It's the first Disney movie I'm excited for since Encanto

Im so glad that I've been seeing people agree that the animation looks unfinished. Its like it's not fully rendered

This movie looks really weird. They really should have put in the effort and made this movie with classic habd-drawn animation.

I feel that they just wanted to hop in the "Spider-verse animation style" trend since they saw that many rival studios have been doing the same thing, but without risking the 3D animation technique that they've been using since the eariler 2010's, and at least for me, it's not really convincing, any 2D effect looks great but the 3D animation looks unfinished, like it belongs in a Disney Jr. show, and not in the good way

As soon as I saw the first add I just couldn't help but think that they aren't making the 3D animation look 2D, rather, it looks like unfinished 3D art. It looks like Sophia the First, a kids daytime TV show. Actually, it looks worse, like the Shrek 1 blooper reel. I just DON'T believe Disney did this on purpose, I think they simply ran out of budget to fully render this film. They are doing SO poorly they just couldn't afford to make it look better, but they're too prideful to admit it. XD

Asha's design has always reminded me of Isabella from Encanto and I wish her design was a little stronger. For example, simply having her braids a little looser in animation or maybe giving her an accessory would've helped a little bit with differentiating her.
For those who can't see it, she has a similar skin tone, hair color (despite Asha seeming to have African features), and hair length. She also has a very similarly colored and length of dress (with Isabella's dress actually having more designs according to her character). She's so plain looking to me for some reason and Isabella looks better despite their designs being so similar. Also, to say that she's plain because she's poor or something doesn't make sense to me because she's wearing PURPLE. A color for royals.

First impression and fully honest here, the first 20 sec of the trailer were met with "Oh wow I rly like the backgrounds!" followed by "but why are the characters so off?" to ""uhm.. it feels like they put a filter on it"
It gives off cgi from early 3D films, I understand what they tried, but clearly either they were too afraid to make big changes or they couldn't find a good way to make it happen. At this point I'm sure Disney tries to "please" everyone, but as we humans tend to be too, you can't please everyone, and if you do it, WHO are you truly in the end? As long es they don't redefine their vision and style, they will be stuck in their jack of all trades, master of none.

The backgrounds are indeed 2d old-school disney animation, and it has a mixture of watercolors. It looks nice but I think will need to watch it in the big screen to see how ti goes.

The trouble is that every artist has a unique and distinct style, so when the same group of artists design and animate everything it all starts to look very samey. John Williams will always sound like John Williams, for example, and Milt Kahl will always look like Milt Kahl. Hiring on or sourcing out to new animators could help alleviate the problem, or perhaps exploring different animation techniques, but some change is definitely needed.

My dude, Disney has always sourced out its artists. Not all the animation is made in house. If you ask me, they were at their most innovative in the earlier years. The shift to 3d is what killed it.

there's also the issue with princesses having the same personality. Anna, Rapunzel, Mirabel, Moana, and now this new princess are all "aWkWaRd and QuIrCkY" just give us a princess with a personality god damn

mirabel is only awkward and quirky when she’s talking to the kids because it’s an act. She’s actually quite sarcastic, dismissive and snarky. Not to mention she’s a lot calmer than the other ones there

I respectfully disagree. I thought the whole 3D era was very repetitive, with the films having all the same too perfect faces for their princesses. I find the art style of Wish very pictural, it looked like painting. Finally, Disney are taking risks with its animation, something we never really saw since Princess and the Frog.
