    You helped me a lot! I also had the same rotting grey vacuum line, but did not know where it was connected to. You showed it connected to heater lines control servo, and mine had a missing vacuum line. Also my 97 Ranger was running very weak. The primary coil pack( the one in the back) was not sparking. It turned out to be a bad connector. It looked fine, but the little contacts inside were not connecting. A new connector from Autozone for $36 fixed the spark problem. And I just passed the California smog test with 273,000 miles on the 2.3 Liter engine. Yeah!!!!

    The 1998-2001 Ranger has a 2.5, not a 2.3. It was a very short lived engine, but it was basically the exact same engine as the 2.3 but just a bit larger. Edit, never mind you corrected yourself. 😂

    Mines a 97. This is the only time I've had such a good view of the spark plugs on that side. They've always been an enigma. Between my hands and the plenum i couldn't see a thing.

    I have a 2000 Ranger with the 2.5, and I've noticed that it occasionally misfires while it's idling. But it operates perfectly under load. It's not enough to throw a code though, so I suspect that it's the coil pack starting to go bad. I checked all of the plug wires and they looked fine, and I replaced all of the spark plugs a few years ago (which was a pain in the arse). So the only thing I can think of is the coil pack. Or it could be the MAP sensor. But those rarely go bad on these trucks. I already tested the head gasket to see if it was leaking, and it didn't change color. So that's good. My engine has over 170k miles, so I wouldn't be surprised if the gasket was starting to leak.

    • @ChristmanGarage
      @ChristmanGarage  Год назад +1

      Check over your vacuum lines these trucks are bad about breaking vacuum lines and a leak will sometimes cause a slight skip if all good it could be a coil however most the coils I’ve seen go bad skip worse under a load👍 maybe this helps good luck!

    Nice job! My favorite engine. I had an inssue with a crank shaft position sensor. No where does it tell that there are two of them. One on the passenger side and one on the driver side tucked facing backwards. Wiring harness connector gone to the bad!

    Know this video is 2 yrs old, but have a 1999 ford ranger 2.5 with a rough idle. It runs all right, but at a light it idles rough and have changed the plugs, wires, both coils, tps, maf sensor and both o2 sensors and it still idles rough. Could the injectors be bad? Plugged my hand held scanner in and from what I can read, but don't understand is the short term and long term fuel trims are both negative when it idles. And from what I can read both o2's seem to function right. Don't know if you can help or not. I thank you for your time. Truck has over 300 k on it.

    Excellent video sir. I’m having a little issue with my 1999 Ford ranger with a 3.0 flex fuel.
    I am the original owner and do my own maintenance. It’s got me kind of stumped and trying to determine what’s wrong.
    I’ve got 120,000 miles it developed a real bad miss, plugged in on scanner and it was cylinder number five misfire. “P305”. It was due for plugs and wires anyways so I installed new spark plugs, wires, compression test 150 psi, reset the code and the problem intermittently comes back with cylinder five misfire I’m trying to determine if I have a bad injector or coil pack. FYI, during replacement of all six spark plugs I had noticed cylinder number five spark plug electrode was extremely worn down, comparing to the other spark plugs. Please let me know what you think. Have a great day.

      First thank you for the detailed comment👍 good job! I personally would put a coil pack on it they are notorious for going bad. If you could swap two off the coil packs sometimes you can pin point a bad one before you purchase one. If all these tactics fail it could be an injector but they are not as common as a coil pack. Maybe this helps👍

      @@ChristmanGarage ok just changed the Coil pack and still having the issue. Intermittent Miss. I drove a couple miles this morning with absolutely no issue and after I stopped at my destination and started back up the Miss came back?? Any idea of a fuel injector causing this?
      So I’ve Changed Plugs, Wires, Coil pack, ran fuel injector cleaner and compression test.
      I’m about ready to either clean or replace the injectors I figured if I’m doing one I might as well do all

      @@ChristmanGarage I was checking vacuum lines and replace a couple that were very dry rotted as just suspicion in there rather cheap.
      I was debating pulling in cleaning the injectors or just replacing them in general their original from 1999. Everything mechanical one day will fail. I’ll keep you posted. Thank you for getting back to me. I appreciate it. Hope your holidays are going well.

      Ford numbers their cylinders 123 on the passenger side and 456 on the drivers side. #5 should be the middle cylinder on the driver side👍. Here is a link to what it should look like

    • @ChristmanGarage
      @ChristmanGarage  2 года назад

      Did you unplug the MAP sensor of the MAF sensor ? These engines are bad about the MAF getting dirty or going bad it is the sensor just behind the air filter on the intake hose sometimes you can clean it with some special cleaner designed for MAF sensors. I would try that first then see if it skips under a load, this truck only was noticeably skipping under a load👍. Maybe this helps

    Best performance upgrade to the engine is to replace the engine with a good one that wasn't cobbled together by monkeys in lab coats

    • @dogsandwich77
      @dogsandwich77 Год назад +2

      Yeah, i mean they only produced these (and countless other engines) at the Lima plant for 31 years. They were so terrible that they put them in like 17 different Ford and Mercury models, and also the later Mazda trucks. So slow they had to even make turbo versions, and so poorly designed its a mystery how they ever were able to adapt it to waste spark systems and fuel injection. 8 SPARK PLUGS?! That's sooooo haaard to count to. Should just go to Walmart and get an LS engine huh?
      Seriously, what does "performance" mean in a Ranger? They're tiny, slow, pickup trucks, and they best thing they do is start up and run every day. Then again, some people think removing an EGR valve is a performance upgrade, which is in fact the opposite.
      On top of decades of production, adaptability, longevity, and the amount of love every one besides you have for them, people build the 2.3/2.5's for oval dirt racing cause they're SOLID. IF I ever see one of them lab coat monkeys id shake its monkey hand and then probably try to convince it to come home with me.
      Take a lap.
