PSA for those looking to try:
Pack minimal luggage, or use delivery services. Local trains are mostly for transit, not for long distance travel. As such, travelling facility will be limited.

It's my once-in-a-year routine to do the route between Nagoya and Tokyo with two suitcases and a heavy backpack, it's not impossible, and onboard you can assemble your belongings in a compact and sturdy way (cables are useful), but the very short transfers when you have to use the stairs are tedious for sure.

I’ve done this route before. The ends at east and west have rapid trains, so they aren’t too bad as long as you can secure a seat, but the rural bits, particularly the long stretch in Shizuoka with multiple transfers and the Shinkansen passing by every few minutes to taunt those taking the slow route, can be punishing both physically and mentally.

I’d take the slow route for the experience. I’ve learned it’s better to slow down and enjoy the journey versus fast traveling and missing things. But maybe I’m just weird lol but I still think that way is a bit more exciting and worthwhile.

It was funny when you got bored after six hours. A 11 hour travel time for me is a flight to Asia in cramped conditions. But at least there is in flight entertainment. However, at least you have moving space.
Also was travelling east from Kyoto to Yamashina...at least Yamashina is only a short distance from Kyoto.
I seems like the main event was Kyoto! I have been there so many times but never been to the ramen arcade. I really should try it some time.

I use to take the special rapid from Kyoto to Osaka station. In Japan Express trains are premium, so they label free trains that skip stops "rapid", the "special rapid" means they only stop at one or two stations between cities. I don't really care for Ramen, but I would walk thru the Ramen area to get to the sky bridge all the time.

Oh, man! Those train rides sucked!! You should get a tablet, 2 or 3 recharging batteries and about 10 movies to put on it! That's what I've done and it works out great! May I suggest Hunt for Red October?! I hate to see you suffer like that! Good video! Thanks! 😃

Nice view of the hill with white fluffy stuff. You should use the rings to practice for the Olympics. ☺️

Seishun 18 ticket is the most useful ticket in japan. Now we can go from Tokyo to Kokura which is Fukuoka prefecture.but we use full one day
    for it.

I had once got lost while riding the local train in Japan because it suddenly stopped on a station that wasn't my destination unbeknown to me that was the last stop for the day... ended up walking out into a very quite residential neighborhood and walked for about 3km looking for a taxi lol!

It’s beautiful to enjoy the video while I’m going from Milan To Palermo with regional trains in Italy, this trip is over 1200 kilometres and it’s taking to me two night stops

when I went to japan in 2019, my family and I traveled to see Mt Fuji by local train; it took us half the day to go to the nearby town only to find out we couldn’t see it due to bad weather and then the rest of the day to travel back. I can’t imagine how this train ride felt, but I know it’s an adventure lol

I was unable to see My Fuji in my trip in 2009, too due to weather. I was very disappointed to say the least.

It would be good to do this trip, but take two or 3 days to do it. It's fun stopping off for a while in the towns along the way; they are much more "Japanese" than the big cities. No problem if you have JR Pass.
