This week’s film breakdown analyzes Los Angeles Chargers Quarterback Justin Herbert. Last year coming out of Oregon, I scouted Herbert and predicted he was going to be a bust, but.. boy was I wrong. After Herbert broke rookie records and won the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year, I wanted to dissect where and why my evaluation went so wrong. This episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze Los Angeles Chargers Quarterback Justin Herbert.

The draft is not an exact science. Even the so call experts (i.e. Kiper, Mcshay) have some head scratching type of evaluations that leave me wondering "what the heck were they thinking". I also didn't see JH notching the OROTY award. What evaluators can't see is inside the players heart and see their work ethic, determination or the drive to become the very best they can be. The biggest element from Herbert's Oregon tape that was largely ignored by analysts pre-draft was the total lack of receiving talent at his disposal. There wasn't a single draft-calibre WR in Herbert's senior year, yet he still put up excellent numbers across the board and led his team to the Rose Bowl.

Hats off to Herbert. I didn't believe in him either, but the improvement he showed from college to the pros is simply astounding. He made absolutely insane leaps mentally, and I think getting him out of that limiting scheme helped him too. The Oregon offense was so built around screens that it became easy to think that they didn't trust the guy to do much else. But as it turns out, he could. And hats off to the Chargers coaching staff too, who had him ready so early. Both them and Herbert himself made this happen, so all credit in the world to them for that.
I still don't really disagree with my own opinion of him coming out, because his college tape truly was all over the place, riddled with basic errors, weird mechanics and baffling throws, in addition to the amazing throws. Now he's cut down dramatically on the mistakes, cleaned up his release so he doesn't skymail as many throws, and he's processing things quickly and effectively. Amazing progress from him. Again, I'm just incredibly impressed by the progress he made between the end of the college season and the start of the NFL season. Night and day.

The kid is truly amazing and fun to watch. Yes, he has a bullet arm, or a canon arm, but man, that sucker has a built in radar for those missiles he throws. Talk about accurate. Dang. He’ll be near impossible to beat with a few more years under his belt and he starts calling his own plays. That’s scary right there.

What truly AMAZED me about Justin Herbert was his ability to stay cool when he would ball out and either put the team in a position to win or put em up enough where a comeback was unlikely ONLY for both to happen week in and week out. Missed FG’s, freak plays, bad coaching…Herbert stayed cool when so many QB’s rookie or vet would flip out. Imagine if Aaron Rogers was on the Chargers last season….dude he called his teammates out few seasons ago because they weren’t stepping up thus costing games lol!! This was on another level. Even Herbert’s head coach made it known that he hadn’t earned a starting role until he was forced to because of how insanely well he was playing. It was messed up how the Dr’s cost Taylor’s starting job BUT it is NOT Herberts fault for coming in and balling out.

I've always valued work ethic as one of the top QB (or really any position) traits. 90% of busts are either work ethic problems or tragic injuries. Cant really guard against the latter. If the player is willing to work really hard to get better, and if they are really devoted, they will get better.

I remember he threw a pass to Keenan Allen against the jets on a broken play, he had a split second to fit the ball in a window that wasn’t there but saw Keenan break back and I swear it was picked, but it got there so quick and next thing you know Keenan has it. Insane arm talent and processing, especially for a rookie.

One thing that I noticed when he was playing at Oregon is that his passing was too hot and hard for the calibre of receivers there in after they lost their top receivers. After half the passes were being dropped, the had him "turn down" his arm...And his accuracy and confidence suffered for it. There were a lot of problems with the Oregon offense..... Herbert wasn't able to drive there. He actually appeared to decline, but that wasn't because of him.

I remember before the draft looking into who the chargers were going to draft and seeing his name come up more often than not, and looking into him I was excited to be getting such a talented young quarterback. Of course my brother, who arguably is way more into stats than I am, was not pleased as he said “all Oregon quarterbacks turn out to be busts” but I had a gut feeling this guy was going to be our quarterback, that he was gonna bring the chargers into a better and more competitive place even if it took time.
And he beat any expectation I had, he’s a beast and I genuinely cannot wait to see just how much better he is by the end of this year, or in 5 years. Sooner of later the majority of the nfl will give him the props he deserves like they did to Mahomes.

Probably helped that once he went from being a student athlete to a pro athlete, Herbert could use all of his brain power to focus on football as he was getting top marks in his classes at Oregon which took out a lot of time and energy that most players would use to study film and do any extra off field workouts.

This is a nice video to watch. I saw every game he played at Oregon ,and even went to a game at autzen where he started. I had a ton of belief in his ability, and even I didn't see him being this food so fast. As much as I love Oregon, that university doesn't have clue 1 of how to get the best out of each qb they have , and his draft status suffered because of it . But people should have realized he had the intelligence to process defenses just by talking to him and know how elite academically he was/is. Your video was video 1 of the fodder people threw shade at as the top hater of him lol. So super good on you to not only accept the whif, but show why and show how it's made you better at your job because of it. Good stuff man!
