    This week’s film breakdown analyzes Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens offensive struggles. The team started out red hot in the first 10 weeks of the season, but after struggling these past several weeks, specifically against one particular coverage, the passing offense has gone cold. Since their 7-3 start they are 2-3 and haven’t scored more than 22 points in a game over that stretch. What’s going wrong with their offense and how much is their offensive coordinator Greg Roman to blame? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens offense.

    It's such an easy concept to beat. The Dolphins did it very well, cover 0 blitz, but the NTs are just there to occupy the Center and Guards, and they drop into coverage. So you can't throw a slant. All you need to do is throw speed outs, or even a streak to your fastest receiver Hollywood Brown as there's no safety help. Greg Roman is the problem in Baltimore, and yes, Lamar has been in a slump, but until the playcalling changes this offense will continue to be inconsistent. - Eagles Fan

    • @jxnr6
      @jxnr6 2 года назад +16

      Problem with that concept is that you need some time for those speed outs/streaks to manifest. That can’t happen when both our OTs are turnstiles. Roman can definitely be more creative with his play calling but I believe DeCosta deserves blame too for trying to go cheap with the RT spot with Villanueva.

      The truth is you can only hide a running quarterback's inability to read defenses and make quick decisions for so long...this will be the end for Lamar Jackson...I have been saying this since he was drafted. I love the tweak to Cover Zero where the DBs watch the QB instead of the WRs for the first second or two. And Banjo seems to create the possibility of a zone read from the QB, making him think they're not really playing Man. All this while the pocket is collapsing. Risky, but great upside.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 2 года назад +1

      Its a very callous and calculated risk. Fins ran it crazy in their game with the Ravens because the Ravens weren't beating it outright. It is risky if those wide outs DO get the quick slant pass, beat their initial defender and ran it all the way for a TD. Hell the Ravens had 10+ chances for every cover 0 blitz was ran on them and they never broke out of jail. In terms of risk management FLores and his Fins D had a good day at the office.

      @@t4d0W I get where you're coming from. Still, at this point I'd prefer to force Lamar to beat me with his arm while under duress from the pass rush instead of a standard rush that lets him bail and run for it.
      I think most teams rightly disrespect Lamar's ability to work the pocket, look off the defense, and run through his progressions. Introducing chaos to something he's not great at hurts him.
      Like you said, a calculated risk. But still, until the Ravens scheme for it, lots of upside.

      @@VinceLyle2161 that solution is sound as well but I look at it if you give Lamar the space in the pocket and give him time, he can still do damage with his legs as he has shown and you are playing into Greg Roman's game. So give him the simulated pressure and have him prove to the defense that he can outright execute and beat the scheme (given the defensive personnel of course as the Fins were confident in theirs). If he can then obviously the Cover 0 is off the table against him. If he can't then lay on the pressure against him since he's the one who has not shown the ability to adapt.

    Maybe when the ravens build up he offensive line and get their running backs back, they may have a better answer. Nevertheless, this blitz has cost us games. I wonder what the Ravens have in store to stop this next season. So far they haven't added any significant playmakers around Lamar, nor have they given him an extension. You would assume they would have it figured out, but I also expect defenses to adjust so they can still run this and force Lamar to beat them with quick reads and his arm. Ravens don't seem to have a tough receiver who's consistently willing to go across the middle, eg. Mike Thomas, Julian Edelmen, etc. All they seem to have are burner wide outs and tight ends. Admittedly, Andrews is a top receiver, but if you add a pure route running wide receiver, Lamar has passing options at every level of the defense in addition to his ability to get the first down via his legs.

    • @jacobfaughnan9795
      @jacobfaughnan9795 2 года назад

      The Ravens have excellent tightends. Their problem is whether or not they can consisently convert first down by the air when relying on crisp route running and ability to produce separation immediately over a short 3-5 yard route on 3rd down. Watkins and Hollywood Brown are good deep threats but any great corner in the NFL can just assume they're going deep and, in the off chance they go short, adapt and disrupt the pass as a result of their lack of lateral movement. If the Ravens could challenge every level of the field in the passing game, in addition to their running game, they would be ridiculously difficult to defend. If Lamar added to his ability to audible at the line, the sky's the limit.

Yes, the Ravens revised their offense to match Lamar's talent not "fit" them as if Lamar was a checkers player they needed to fit to play chess. That is a BS narrative from those who did not want a dual-threat QB (read Black QB) to succeed. The Dolphins, Panthers, Jaguars, and Bengals to name a few, were all in need of a QB mode when Lamar was drafted. Their ownerships failed to see the potential, and all but one of them is still in flux today. The problems don't really seem to be in the offensive scheme. The answers are there. The problem is execution. Cover 0 forces Lamar and the Ravens to execute, as you said, with precision, receiver and QB on the same page, and that's something the Ravens haven't been able to do since.. Lamar became QB. There may be other issues, but the fundamental one is Lamar just isn't a very good QB.
    The Ravens taking Lamar as their QB was a massive gambit to use a spectacularly talented player who was a very limited passer and using him as their QB. The reality is, they've pushed this concept as far as it can go and learned it can only go so far, and that's well short of the Superbowl. Given Lamar's threat as a runner is going to decrease every year of his career, the Ravens really have to ask themselves if it makes sense to continue the experiment, which had it moments, especially before the league adjusted, but doesn't show much promise for the future.

    • @complexrobb4528

      You do realize the ravens missed the playoffs 3 out of the 4 years before Lamar became their QB right ? Since then they’ve made it every year ? You literally sound like a hater and to be quite frank like a moron. You also realize they’ve suffered the most season ending injuries to starting players in the league ? Not to mention lost their best CB1 and 2 ? You make literally 0 sense. Any real football fan with even a remote amount of knowledge will tell you Greg Roman is the problem don’t be a stooge bud even with all the injuries and the last ranked pass defense they still manage to lead their division which is loaded with .500 and above teams you clearly need to do your homework.

    • @VinceLyle2161
      @VinceLyle2161 2 года назад

      Good analysis. The NFL has always been better at reacting to innovation than innovating. The read option had maybe two years until DCs started scheming against it. I think it's because there's no fakery involved. Play action does have fakery involved, so even though it's 55 years old, it still works. Same with RPOs. The defense has to wait until it sees a hidden ball to react. With the read option, the ball was always in sight, and a patient defense could just string the play out with the right personnel.
      In Lamar's case, the NFL has had four years to watch him. Doesn't it make sense that they'd know his game pretty well by now? Yes, he's an explosive runner. But in the pocket, he's not as elusive, standing inexplicably flat-footed at times. He doesn't look like Russell Wilson, who has been a great runner, but who also goes through his progressions, hides his intent, and can escape a sack while still intending to throw the ball.
      The things Lamar excels at are the things that come naturally to him. The things he doesn't excel at are the things savvy QBs develop over time. Cover Zero takes away any time to think and it also takes away running lanes in case he bails on the play and tries to run. The word is out on Lamar. This may not go well for him.

    Funny how the O.C. is pilloried, yet Lamar who can't see beyond his first option or understand defensive formations gets a free pass. Clearly the QB's pea brain is being exploited not unlike many of his predecessors with a similar style. They all seem to experience a modicum of success early in their career, but once defensive schemes change to neutralize their mobility, their poor decision making and mediocre passing accuracy become a major challenge, often too great to overcome.

    Harbaugh HATES Him! Man Finds ONE Simple Coverage to DESTROY Ravens' Offense!
    Clickbait joke aside, yeah... It didn't take Brett Kollmann's video or this one to know that Greg Roman killed any semblance of contention left after injuries destroyed their depth. The Ravens will still win a few and might even make the playoffs off of talent and Harbaugh's adjustments alone, but they'll hit a brick wall sometime in January that can counter their offense. I can't believe Roman made it this long, because there have been so many opportunities and reasons to fire him.
    Edit: I wanna make it clear that I'm not complaining about getting another video about this. There are more points of data now than after Brett's video, and his video was more aimed at explaining why the Dolphins specifically were able to get the upset. The Dolphins are still the best example just because of how devoted they were to Cover 0, but a more general approach is also insightful.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 2 года назад +1

      Injuries is one thing but a good coach and scheme can keep a team playing at a high (not elite) level while leveraging every advantage they can get including roster health, inclement conditions, etc. I still remember the game years ago where Belichick went to Baltimore on a rainy Sunday and the Ravens were hot and the Pats had no business trying to push their weight on them with not so good record. Bill took full advantage of the weather and turned it to a slobberknocker fight with the Pats walking away with the win after the game on low scoring event. So much for talent when a coaching staff can't take full advantage of it to make defenses try take it away or they will lose the game.

    • @thatonewriter8043
      @thatonewriter8043 2 года назад +1

      @@t4d0W I'm not really sure what you're disagreeing with me on. Harbaugh and his defensive staff have done a great job exploiting opponents' weaknesses despite having about half the defense they started with, but Greg Roman will be the weak point that gets them eliminated because his inability to counter Cover 0 cripples their offense so badly. The Ravens can bully some teams and probably still make the playoffs, but it will likely be someone like the Patriots running Cover 0, eliminating the Ravens, and reigniting that stupid debate that Lamar can't win in the playoffs.
