- The largest crane on the Eastern Seaboard was being transported to Baltimore so crews on Friday can begin removing the wreckage of a collapsed highway bridge that has halted a search for four workers still missing days after the disaster and blocked the city's vital port from operating.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the crane, which was arriving by barge and can lift up to 1,000 tons, will be one of at least two used to clear the channel of the twisted metal and concrete remains of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and the cargo ship that hit it this week.
"The best minds in the world" are working on the plans for removal, Moore said. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Baltimore District told the governor that it and the Navy were mobilizing major resources from around the country at record speed to clear the channel.
"This is not just about Maryland," Moore said. "This is about the nation's economy. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in America."
He warned of a long road to recovery but said he was grateful to the Biden administration for approving $60 million in immediate aid. President Joe Biden has said the federal government will pay the full cost of rebuilding the bridge.
"This work is not going to take hours. This work is not going to take days. This work is not going to take weeks," Moore said. "We have a very long road ahead of us."
Thirty-two members of the Army Corps of Engineers were surveying the scene of the collapse and 38 Navy contractors were working on the salvage operation, officials said Thursday.
The devastation left behind after the cargo ship lost power and struck a support pillar early Tuesday is extensive. Divers recovered the bodies of two men from a pickup truck in the Patapsco River near the bridge's middle span Wednesday, but officials said they have to start clearing the wreckage before anyone can reach the bodies of four other missing workers.
State police have said that based on sonar scans, the vehicles appear to be encased in a "superstructure" of concrete and other debris.

I live off the first exit from the Key Bridge. Whenever I was coming home from somewhere and I finally got to the bridge it meant I was almost home and I loved it for that. I still can't believe she's gone.
I could see it across the water from my house. On a clear day you could see the cars crossing. Devastating
How long is the reroute?

Thanks to the police for quickly closing the bridge to car traffic as they heard the ship was coming out of control.
This was planned and the officers rejected the memo to leave the bridge open, and closed it anyways. Ship makes MayDay call 3 mins b4 impact at the 6 mins make they were to close to the bridge. Obviously not a car in sight today. Uh Duh
They're bringing in 1100 engineers,
and maybe even a couple laborers.
90%of ships entering and exiting the bay have as little as 12ft clearance from the bottom, so the recovery will have a hard time making sure no future ships scrape any debris left behind.
@user-lm1li8eo1r ugh... who told me? The news did. I watched the news. These cargo shops are massive, and their displacement, when loaded, leaves the vast majority of cargo ships with as little as 12 ft of clearance. Before you JAM a shoe in your mouth, you really should take 4 seconds to Google something you dolt.
Thankfully I didn't travel on that bridge. Not too sure it was built too well to begin with. Prayers for the families.
Who is footing this bill? I hope the shipping company.
Even if the company pays for some of this, it will be years before the payout happens. Do you want tax payer dollars spent on this now, or do you want the wreckage to just sit there?
Oh no it's another opportunity for the WH to throw more money into the wind...they love it..its the goal
Sit there
The red tape process should be expedited. It has been before they just don’t want a crisis to go to waste, or an opportunity to take taxpayer money
Since the bill is going to be well into the billions, I seriously doubt that the shipping company has adequate insurance and assets to cover all the damages. Sure, we should recover everything from them that we can, but we're likely well into "getting blood out of a turnip" territory here. And litigation is likely to drag on for years. We can't afford to wait for that process to play out to get the port reopened and the bridge replaced.
What about a temporary ferry service? Sure it would be limited but it would be something.
Or can't Army Corps of Engineers get a floating bridge up fast? If it can hold tanks and huge army trucks it should be able to take cars and semis.
Excellent report 👌
I Retired at the end of 2022 after 50 years working at almost every port facility in Baltimore, When the Key Bridge was built in the mid 70's ships were nowhere near the size they are now. Containers were fairly new and pure container ships like this were not yet around. These ships now are many times the size ships were then. What are we supposed to do? Tear down and rebuild every bridge every 50 years?

What does Baltimore export ? Why is this bridge referred to as the only bridge in town hazardous waste can be taken out on ?
It's a port. It exports everything. And why do you care about local bridge regulation? Some conspiracy nonsense.
Try to act like human beings some of you. Those are innocent people suffering from this, finding it hard to get to their jobs, losing time better spent with families, their employers suffering harm as well and the impact spreading. I have never asked how the people suffering from a disaster vote. Some people though have no heart at all and that is also a tragedy.
You say "act like human beings" then talk about financial losses. like a robot. People died. "But think about how much money rich people are losing" you say
Looks like the electric poles had better protection than the bridge piers!
Hopefully they will get everything sorted out and this will become a distant memory. 😮
Good thing the bridge was insured and the boat has damage insurance. No reason for taxpayer dollars to be involved
Whos the guy running the ship?
So what has the ship’s company offered up for damages?
Fried rice
Looks like the power poles were protected by big barriers but the bridge wasn't.
Must be a federal roadway. They are the negligent ones.
Notice how the anti-collision bumpers around the power poles are much bigger than around the bridge pilings. In fact, the second set of bridge pilings are completely unprotected against ship collisions. In addition, the bridge was so poorly designed that taking down one piling destroyed the entire bridge instead of just the sections impacted. I only hope they don't hire the same company to design the new bridge. An errant ship if forgivable, but not a defective bridge design. Prayers go out to the good people impacted by this entirely preventable disaster.
How old is the bridge? It was described as “iconic” which I’d assume means old. Meantime the port and the size of the ships have increased many fold.
Some of the bridge needs to be inspected
What can't the people that own the cargo ship take care of the family's and the bridge because it the captain of the ship is responsible for what happens when he's driving where he tried to go under the bridge look like he's was in the wrong spot to go under the bridge my condolences go out to all the family's and friends that loss their life and the city of Baltimore GOD bless them all Amen 🙏.

Is that the Crimea bridge?
It’s in Baltimore!

Explain why the were paying for this? If I'm in an accident I pay. So why isn't the shipping company liable?
Your car isn't vital to the national economy. This bridge and shipping way are. The federal government has an interest in getting the shipping way and bridge back to normal as fast as possible. If the shipping company is found to have been grossly negligent, you can bet they're gonna be ordered to reimburse the government.

It would have been a good investment to upgrade the bridge with fenders around the pylons as container Ship grew in size by a factor of 10 since it was built. A similar accident happened in Florida in 1980 and a lot of older bridges around the country have been upgraded since the accident. Not good planning to defy Murphy's law.
* Who was steering the ship approaching the port? A local, or the ship's own captains?
* Where were the tug boats?
* MEDIA had reported about sonar detecting multiple automobiles in the water. Was it factual?
As has been reported, the ship was under control of a local, licensed, harbor pilot.
As has been reported, the tug boats had withdrawn from the ship after pulling it away from the dock, and could not get back in time,
The media is repeating official reports of sonar detected vehicles, some entangled with the bridge debris, consistent with the videos showing that only the construction vehivles were on the bridge when it went down.
So what is keeping you from recognizing all this?
As reported by a media house at Mar 28, 2024, 5:07 AM PDT: The Baltimore bridge cargo ship asked nearby tugboats for help just before it crashed. It was too late.
So no one is going to blame the company that owns the ship?
when the ship had power was going the wrong way Yes or No?
Outgoing ship, lost power, strong tide pushed huge ship, inertia, mass hit bridge
Gonna need more than 1 crane to get that mess out of water anytime soon to get millions of goods an thousands of jobs going again. Be interesting to see how 1 crane how long an fast it can get that mess cut an lifted on to scrap barges.
I thought that too but I think at this point they are still looking for the missing bodies underwater so it isn't big time removal time yet.
Where did it say they're only gonna use one crane? I missed that part.
Saying you're going to bring in the largest crane on the eastern seaboard doesn't mean you're not going to use other cranes as well.

No, there is other recycled steel closer to Texas, but at least you are trying. No you can't reweld what has gone bad, you can reinforce some parts that did not fall that might though have had some damage.
