- Today, the Coast Guard took WMAR-2 News out on a boat to get up close to the Key Bridge wreckage site. Pictures don't do it justice. What was once a massive structure, is now broken into mangled pieces of debris. Portions of what once was a roadway jut out of the river. Thousands of tons of wreckage sit on top of the Dali, with the 23 men crew still inside.
We also got up close to the salvage work. We were able to see crews cutting into the the steel pieces of the key bridge sticking out of the Patapsco River. Engineers are using exothermic tools to cut the metal into “bite-sized pieces," as the Army Corps of Engineers puts it.
Lightning paused those crane operations most of Tuesday and Wednesday.

The cutting is done by construction / bridge builders. Engineers calculate and design and certify structures These construction workers are the backbone of America, Please give credit where credit is due.
Politicians want all the credit. If this tragedy wouldn’t have happened, the politicians would take credit for patching the potholes on the bridge.
@@geedubb2005Agree 💯….Moore hasn’t shut his mouth since this happened, and he has zero input on how the salvage operations are being coordinated.

I fully agree, excellent job guys !!!! Thank You for all your dedicated work, it means alot to everyone...

I was at Ground Zero the week of 9/11. Try to imagine steel that weighed as much as 1 and 1/2 tons per linear foot. That is what we dealt with: a 70ft tall mountain of twisted and broken steel girders. This is like a Ground Zero in the middle of a deep murky river. Everyone out there is risking their lives. I can't begin to imagine the difficulties. God bless all the brothers down there. Still America Strong.
It's not about NYC 🗽 right now. Get over 9/11 already it's been 20 + years. No more pity for yall.
Thank you for trying to help people understand that this is a little bit bigger clean up project than hauling off your average tornado-wrecked mobile home.
Disregard the idiot, and know we are behind these people 💯 percent... Baltimore strong!!
A cubic foot of gold only weighs bout half a tonne… gold about 2.5 times heavier than steel…
@BLOXKAFELLARECORDS They are not asking for pity. They have empathy for everyone involved in this tragedy, having gone through it during and after 9/11. Tragedies like these leave lasting scars. We will never 'get over it'.
Side tidbit...when you think about how each one of those multi-colored, rectangular boxes on the deck of the boat is the container that is hitched, via trailer, to a semi truck that we see as "big rigs" on the freeway in traffic next to us, it gives you a better perspective of how much they carry, and how big these ships are.
They can be and are moved that way, but standard semi trailers are 13 feet longer than that and a lot less of the trailer is structural steel.

When cutting, care must be taken to ensure that the large parts do not move uncontrollably.
And the company who own that boat in Singapore say they have found alaw dating back to 1871 stating there not legally bound to pay damages for the bridge,
As a former journeyman ironworker (and boat driver for the Coast Guard), I can say you are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.

Dont be ignorant. Google exothermic torch.
@@Skidderoperator Of course it's "exothermic", it produces external heat, that's what the word means. But it's still just a cutting torch. Literally nobody says "Hey, bring the exothermic torch".
I like how they are tossing the term, "exothermic tools" like oxy-propane cutting torches are something otherworldly. Thank god they're not calling them blowtorches, which were used for soldering in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. All cutting tools are exothermic to a degree, as in they emit heat instead of absorbing heat.
Yea...moronic...just like they call rain on the west coast as atmospheric rivers.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. That many huge ships, with international crews, going in and out in crowds and in the dark with bad weather ...
The ship's crew have very little or anything to do with taking a ship in or out of a harbor. Engineers are not the ones doing the cutting That is done by technicians, welders and maybe other experienced hands-on trades. Engineers are educated to degree level or above and would be doing the stress analysis on the bridge members before cutting. Most engineers wouldn't know how to operate a cutting torch, these are different jobs. From what I have seen so far the above water cutting has been done using oxy-acetylene cutting torches, although these won't work under water.
Good post. There is definitely a huge difference between the engineers and welders doing the work here. I'm a structural steel worker with about 30 years of marine industry welding and fabrication under my belt. We used to make fun of Engineers because a lot of them don't have the "hands on" experience that we do. What looks great on paper, sometimes does not work in real life. That's just how it is. A welder/fabricator who has done a lot of repair work on vessels, where you are cutting through "loaded" steel is who should be cutting on those bridge pieces. It's not for the faint of heart either. You have to know what the metal is going to do, when you sever each piece. Often times, that has to be analyzed and worked out in your head, before each cut. And even then, sometimes the spring of the steel that is under pressure can be an eye opener. It's always exciting though, and can be very dangerous. Not a job for a newbie, for sure. I pray for the safety of the workers, and hope they have the skills necessary to complete the job in a timely manner and without any injuries!!
Absolutely. I'm a mechanical engineer with 40 years experience designing large scale infrastructure. You and I do completely different jobs, but equally essential. The first thing I thought of when they were talking about clearing the bridge away was doing an analysis of each member because cutting loaded steel (especially underwater) could kill you in a heartbeat! While I can do the numbers its at best an approximation of what you have in real life. @@lmbear

In Europe there are several floating cranes that can lift 9000 to 15000 tons so could lift this bridge wreckage in sections. So I am surprised they do not have similar vessels in the US since they are used in the oil industry to lift and transport oil platforms and I would expect them to be operating in the Gulf of Mexico.
And how long to get a crane from the Gulf of Mexico to Baltimore? And that is provide the crane does not already have a work load where it is. Bring one from Europe, it would get here in a month or two, and again what about the work it already has been booked for? I guess the fact there are not oil fields near to the bay is why there are not cranes like that already there.
Off shore wind turbines require the same scale of lifting capacity, and some of those are located on the east coast. If they're not being used there's probably a good reason for it.
these cranes have way more capacity than you state, but where do you put such a heavy piece after it's cut? The barges have limited space so that's the main reason to make them into bite size pieces.
the americans rather have there money spent on 800 of those stupid military bases around the globe so YES you have a Point .

What are the names of the missing construction workers? What are the names of the ppl on board the Dali at the time of the crash? Why have we not seen any interviews of those on board the Dali?
The names of the construction workers have been published on the news. The ship workers probably were not out watching what happened so what would they have to say about it? (and probably not in English)
Could they not use the 'rope saw' used to cut the Kersk submarine? Then a ship either side could stand back so they were safe when things sprang when they were cut through.
1:48 200 tons "bite size." 3K to 4K tons on Dali. Math works out to 15 or 20 "bites" to get the steel off of the Dali. *_So 150 - 200 hours of crane time_* to remove steel from the Dali during workable conditions.

They are looking for the remains while clearing the wreckage. There is no other way to do it.
The most important thing is that things are moving along with different people doing different jobs concertedly.
aka teamwork you mean?
They talk so much about how much this is a financial setback, but those lives are over, and you can't put a price on lives.
So no one talking about the people who were on the bridge when it was hit.
Why are the lives of construction workers being risked to cut up the bridge remnant's? Things could go south in a moment as unknown stresses in the structure are released by cutting. We have Navy Seals trained in demolition, so let's use them. I am not talking about blowing the bridge to kingdom come. Demo charges can sever an I-beam almost as neatly as an acetylene torch. The demolition charges could be detonated remotely with no risk of lives lost. This would be a lot faster as well and everyone wants the port reopened quickly (and safely).
