Another vote here for Trenchers. Lots of crispy batter. Didn't sit inside but took it to a bench and looked over the harbour area. Was a day like yours too. Beautiful.

An Aussie here tuning-in to see what my English mates are getting up to. I'll be honest and say I watched this right the way through because I believe it was a review on The Fisherman's Wife that I watched some time back and found it really interesting. And I'm glad I did stay & watch. Excellent review, thank you.

I heard the Magpie is overrated so we are trying Trenchers and Angel Fishery when we visit in September. We have reservations at The Angel for two nights.

When I went to the Magpie awhile ago, the fish and chips were average at best, certainly nothing notable apart from the queues outside.
I have to agree with you on the Magpie, in my opinion there are much better options in Whitby
True , good fish and chips are all as good as each other the competition in Whitby is tremendous anyone dishing up mediocre fish and chips won't last long

I wasn’t impressed with Tge Magpie but loved Trenchers, but would give The Fisherman’s wife a try. Looked lovely x

My wife and I always went to the Fisherman's Wife for a meal, until moving out of easy public transport range to Whitby. We have tried other places but for fish and chips this place in our opinion is the best. If you don't want fish and chips try the Humble Pie N Mash Shop on Church Street.

The Traditional way to cook fish and chips. We thought it was sacrilege when they started using oil. A pennyworth of chips would keep you going all day in the 1930's. (Real pennies at 240 to the pound). We all used beef dripping in our chip pans at home too.

Good Evening Deano. Your Fish & Chips with the Mushy Peas and Curry Sauce with the Home Made Tartare Sauce, looked really Delicious. The Haddock was a very lovely Fillet of Haddock, fleshy and white, Your Chips were absolutely perfectly cooked and had that Golden Brown colour, Mushy Peas were Excellent, but the Curry Sauce was not very Good, much to dark and very runny, No not for me. You had a very Good Strong cup of Tea to go with Your meal. I would have asked the Restaurant Server if i could have moved to a bigger table and more room, You are the Customer who is very Important Deano. A very Lovely and Relaxing Restaurant for the visiting Diner. The Menu, was absolutely Incredible, You could have had a Whole Lobster with a Bottle of Champayne. The Customer Service was very Good Deano. This was a very Good value for Your money I thought. What a Beautiful Establishment to go and have a Delicious Seafood meal at. I would Give a Total Score of 10/10. Thank you very much for Sharing your video my Friend. Jonathan.

When I make batter at home, it's plaine flour, salt, and a teaspoon of bicarb. With ice Cold water. Don't forget to flour the fish before batter. Best scraps as well.
I actually liked The Magpie when I last visited Whitby. Couldn't actually get into Trenchers.

They slice the fillet to make two ...rip off merchants who have also stolen public space at the back of the restaurant and put up the most ugly fencing.

OMG, those prices. Imagine a trip to the seaside, fish n chips for yourselves and a couple of kids, £80 gone for one meal. I don't think so, walk on by.

We stayed in Whitby last month, Went to the fishermans wife on the Friday night, and liked it so much we went back on the Saturday. Didn`t have the fish and chips, but had the cod loin. Was lovely food. Very busy on Saturday, but the service was excellent.
Best fish and chips is Fusco's now called Royal fisheries ask all the locals I used to live there.

Do not go to Trenchers i went last week and mine and the wifes cod was undercooked and the chips were reheated felt ill for a few days after aswell

My fave chippie to eat in at in Whitby is Russell's i think its over the bridge and on the opposite corner from the street up to the abby steps.

I went there for my birthday a few years ago and stayed just outside of Robin Hoods bay. Cracking over there only been once but did do the magpie. However Fisherman’s wife looked decent. The lighting is down to it not being flicker free and using your mobile device Deano ….Smithy

deano do not do papas its awful mine ended up in the trash,nice sunday dinner at the pier inn tour bus is the easy way to get to whitby brewery no climbing the steps lol .
Stuart fusco is probably best fryer in Whitby,yes it is expensive but Stuart fusco is the best I recommend you try the takeaway.

The inside of that place put me right off TBH, you were right by a door and some random stranger really close by. Pity you weren't able to sit outside. Lovely view though. I agree the curry sauce looked very thin.
I have driven across the country for fish and chips in Whitby, and fun fact, i found out the other day that my local chippy will serve the fish and chips in the newspaper , without the plastic box. Result.

As for the Fish and Chips, if you liked them, great! I thought that the sides were massively overpriced. That you gave it a eight and half our of ten surprised me. FIsh good, chips good, batter rubbush, peas OK, curry sauce rubbish. Max score 7.
Let's see what Scarborogh has to offer. As for the Magpie, forget it, It lives on it's renown, ther are better out there.

Looks like a decent portion for a small. I'll never understand tartar sauce, it's just the ginger step child of mayonnaise and that's pickled snot in itself. All the chippies around our way cooked in dripping when I was a nipper and the curry sauce was mostly black pepper flavour. There was an ace chippy near us had a neon sign in the window that just said "DRIPPING!"
Sorry Deano but you missed a trick. Definitely should've gone to Trenchers as they're easily the best in Whitby. Although Hadley's is a close second.
