Make sure to subscribe to Sean's channel. He was extremely gracious with his time. We spent hours on this. Recording at night + researched other videos to make sure we could bring something fresh. If he agreed 100% with existing tutorials, we wouldn't have made it. Hope it's helpful!
when is the interview with Ashton coming?
Watched 2 hours ago; just got done with my deadlifts 2 minutes ago; returned to let youse know that in my 5 years of hook gripping it’s never felt stronger or more natural than now.
bryce’s channel on calgary barbell is criminally underrated when it comes to powerlifting content
I'd argue his Hook video is better
@@mattymattffs I agree. This video is kinda all over the place
Agree
Criminally absolutely 💯
Calgary barbell is sjw bs
Letting the bar just sit (and not squeeze with all your might) lower in the fingers really is the key.
Ok I tried this today and the bar basically was slipping out of my hands the whole time...am I missing something!?
@@KFaggella3 If your hook grip was working well before watching this video don’t change it, will only mess things up hahah
@@joeeaton9560 exactly what I did lol, just went back to the old way 😂
I just tried these techniques. Worked well for me! Faster off the floor, and no messing around with setup! Thank you both!!
Great tutorial, was very informative. Grabbing the bar too deep was something I stopped doing a few months ago. My pulls feel so much smoother now.
One of the best videos out there about the hook grip.
THANK YOU!! Tried this today... game changer, instantly comfortable!
OMG this video is literally perfect timing. I was just about to try hook grip for the first time when I saw this pop up in my feed. Thanks! Great tips, thumbs still hurt a lot though.
Sean Noriega: "Let me just say the same thing again but different"
That point about not digging to deep is world altering for me. I will try that out tomorrow. Thanks!
I cant thank you both enough, i watched this video yesterday and went into the gym today and totally fixed my hook grip. Pain gone, max +50lbs. Just from the grip, also just finished the candito 6 weeks program and that added 35lbs to my squat.
The candito program adds a lot of weight to prs
+50lbs to pr from grip change? Was your pr 225?💀
I was waiting for this video for so long. Thanks Johnny 👍
Great work fellas, thank you so much
The first hook grip video I saw was omar's. It was game changing for me. Bryce's video also gave me more info to apply and try. Very helpful. I feel this video will be the same. I like being able to take all the info from everyone and coming up with my own way to skin the cat.
Yes! Ive said tried to tell this to loads of people and this is the first video ive seen that demonstrates hookgrip how i do it. I have always been confused about why people get thumb callous as ive used hookgrip for 8+ years and never had this.
For me im stronger when i use hookgrip vs straps as i feel i have a slightly shorter ROM
BRUH, THIS VIDEO IS VERY HELPFUL, THANK YOU BOTH CANDITO AND SEAN =D
This video is amazing, I watch plenty of videos on this topic and could never get it right. My first time trying hook grip I was able to pull
Gonna need to try this. Great vid.
Thank you boys, needed this
Bought two things of Preworkout but I wasn't able to use your discount code because there is a St Patricks day discount automatically applied. But I did make sure to message them personally and let them know you sent me. Thanks for the unparalleled free content Jonnie
Thanks for sharing guys! Sean is Brilliant
Thank you for this amazing content. I am working on my hook grip now and I m still not used to it. It s gonna help me a lot
EPIC video, such great tips in here, totally going to help me. Thank you!!
This is a good tutorial for those who are already using hook grip, not really for beginners
here from TooBuff4This
Same
Been searching about this today for a friend. This could definitely help.
fantastic video can't wait to try this
Jokes on you Sean, I cant get a deep grip with hook grip because my hands are so small.
@0070 Gibran Maulana 🤣
Me, whos been pullin hook for like 3 months now, realizing the same 😭😂 small hands vibez
Yeah, I have to bury the bar in the web of my thumb just to get my fingers halfway across my thumbnail, which doesn’t seem to create enough friction for weights over 585. It’s honestly annoying to see yet another hook grip video that ignores the reality of how hand size/finger length dependent it is.
@@timk8258 I have yet to make any hook variant work for me - I have short/fat fingers and very thick palms.
I’m over 500lbs pulling alternate grip but would love to make a hook work. Definitely frustrating.
That said, I plan to try some of the other tips from this video, which I think is the best I’ve seen yet.
that's nonsense. i have pretty small hands myself:
Foodball gloves size S/M. The Hook Grip fits tightly and works.
why does it feel like somehow sean is out of focus and lower res when he's standing right next to jonnie
Yeah! 😂 Jonnie did that in the edit maybe. Shaaaade (jokes)
He is out of focus. Sean is standing further from the camera and Jonnie's aperture is too wide and the focus is set on him.
He looks like he smells bad
Genetics
Sean even maximizes efficiency in his pixel count.
Ok, now we're just gonna wait for the arching video! Thanks 😂🥰
Sean is just built different. total beast
Built for 3 inch ROM lifts maybe
Still Zero reps.
@@zanidgar5640 lol mad
@@qraxulz4376 he really do be hitting 3 inch ROM PR's doe 😂
@Dick weed You probably crank it to Jamal Browner, tf outta here
Thank you for this video! This is very good
I was about to give up on hook grip when I saw this vid. Perfect timing
had the cotton candy preworkout and the taste is 10/10
Babe wake up, Jonnie and Sean dropped a new collab.
Best hook grip video i ever soon
My hands are literally salivating while watching this
You're gonna need some liquid chalk then lol
Thank you, I ripped half my hand off the other day trying to do my top single and top set of 5 hook. Ill save it only for singles next time.
watched this video and experimented with it for about 1 month. today, ladies and gentlemen, i have mastered the art of the hookage 😤🤝
Happy I saw this video. I use to think hook was holding with index finger
Thanks, great video
😂 Chest at the end! Classic play by play.
Man I really wanna learn this, I wish there are actual shots of Sean's hand grabbing the bar from underhand view demonstrating step by step. There is a shot but he's so fast when you slow it down its nothing but a blur lol
Just got liquid chalk on amazon, will be here by deadlift session this week. I appreciate the keys
This video is so necessary. I hook gripped for years, but I could never get it to work reliably once I got beyond the low 600s. No one had useful advice re: how to fix my issue(s). Eventually gave up on hook, but now I want to try again.
The chestnificent seal of approval
Thanks for this.
Thank you very much.
Those legs are huuuge 😱😱
yeah if you ever needed evidence that you don't have to like, ATG squat to get big legs
@@durrthock doing atg heavy squats but....only my butt is getting bigger.😭😭
@@Versace117 push with legs , smh your butt gets bigger that's quite normal
This man just turned my hand into a strap
I really wanna switch to hook grip on my deads and I'm gonna try to implement those cues next week! Will let you know how it went...😅 but thanks so much for that great content!
wish this video had been out when i started hook gripping, took me like 5 months to figure out on my own
Awesome video Jonnie. I've always had trouble hook gripping 750lb+, it's either hit or miss. This video is a game changer.
Lmaoo. Love it.
Man john started some ludicrous shit from the start XD i lovin it
I think you've succeeded in your aim to post the best tutorial on this
Great content
All I want is Seans quads and that intro with aaaaahhhhhhh
Damn. This really just changed my life
Bro shirts! Candito HQ. I'm keen to support you Jonnie you're content is ace.
My double overhand grip got much better by doing behind the back barbell forearm curls. Use a barbell on a flatbench, racked. Grab it behind ur back, palms facing the bar and arms about shoulder/deadlift width apart, light enough weight to do about 8-10 reps. Open your hands and Let the barbell roll down your fingers then curl your fingers into a fist then curl your hands flexing your Forearms. I do these after Deadlifts and my hands have become hydrolic clamps lol
Johnny, I think you may have legit succeeded at your goal on this one. I've tried switching to hook grip more times than I can count, and anything more than 300 lb was just stapled to the floor unless I went to a mixed grip. Yesterday, I hook gripped well over that for 3 reps using the setup and method you talked about. No idea if it'll hold up at 1 RM weights, but I'm guessing it probably will. Thanks.
Great !!!
hook grip have been feeling natural since the first time for me
YAY i need this video
small thumbs, gave up on hook grip, pain was so bad even after months of doing it that I was actually anticipating deadlift day and getting anxious about it, just doing plain old mixed grip and hoping for the best with regards to biceps tear
Great video! That hook grip takes some time to get used to.
Thank you, hope it helps! Patience is key.
Mind blown! I’ve been doing it wrong for decades
Meanwhile Belkin doing this for the last 6 years.. 💁 very good video!!!🙌
Great video as usual. It's crazy how many people need this. I've always hooked similar to Sean's unknowingly and never had to put any more thought into it and I've pulled up to 750 and passed out before my grip gave out
Someone send this to Jamal lol
Lmao
Check his ig he already watched it :D
3 minutes of info packed into 20 minutes... however did you do it
ive been using their stim free preworkout for almost 2 years. L citrulline is great
Don't mind me. Just liking, commenting, and watch the whole vid for the algorythm
Whenever I have a top set, I only pull that set hook grip. Then the lower weight working sets, straps. But if it’s all singles , I would probably do them all hook grip
3x5xThankYou - game changer
Sean is one of the most explosive pullers in the game..
A day late just ripped my thumb callus off yesterday lol. Guess I've been doing it wrong. Quick question the internal rotation of the shoulder and elbows out same for conventional? Thanks for the tips going to put them to work. Great content!
Have the same question! Did you happen to figure this out?
Hi! Thank you for the video. Should I keep internal rotation through the lift won’t that make the lats less engaged?
Have the same question! Did you happen to figure this out?
I'm confused about the internal rotation thing. If I don't "pinch my armpits shut" then I can't set my upper back. So I'm confused. And it seems like you're doing it before you pull?
Im going to watch this since today I hook gripped and ripped a callous so let’s see if there’s better technique here haha
My right bicep is getting to big and I wanna even out so definitely wanna try this . I played around and got 405 for hook hoping to get a solid 545+ as my max is 505 rn with mixed
So should only the middle finger be over the thumb, or how many? Cause I've hear people say try to get three fingers over the thumb, but that did not work at all for me. Currently I have my index and middle finger over the thumb.
Anyone here after toobuff4this shoutout?
Does the shoulder internal rotation cue apply to conventional deadlift too?
I’m wondering the same thing.
the internal rotation shoulder to let the bar sit on the under thumb instead of the side is just game changer to reduce pain, also let the bar dangle like balls on the bottom of the thumbs is just so AGHHH~~ good.
I tried hook grip the other day and my thumb joints still hurt. Maybe I was doing it wrong. Hopefully this video will help
can you please make a followup video to this? i tried it and I must be doing something wrong. also, what the bar looks like in his hand is not what it looks like in mine because of the different hand sizes.
I find it easier to get that “lowest point” hook much easier on a Rogue Power Bar as opposed to a deadlift bar. The smaller girth of a DL bar gives me the issues of “over hooking” and I do experience the bar roll. The slight increase of thickness in the power bar actually forces me not to overbook.
I know this comment is 5 months old, but I hook grip differently when I use a deadlift bar. I don't have to focus as much on internal rotation and reaching across/horizontally on the bar. My hook feels more secure if I reach my thumb vertically across the bottom and then pull the slack out. Not sure why
Would this be considered more power lifting specific? Or would a looser grip be applicable to oly lifts as well. Genuine question because I’ve never seen anything from Olympic lifters about having a looser grip on the bar and they’re the ones using it the most.
I don't think you'd want to internally rotate on the Oly lift pulls. Olympic lifters don't miss lifts on grip, so there's no need for them to maximise the grip like this. You also need more active wrists/forearms/arms in an Olympic pull.
In oly lifts its even more important to keep the hands relaxed, it gives you way more power in the second pull and avoids the dreaded arm bend in the pull. Also most chinese and russian lifters coach internal rotation for pulls and lockouts. In pulls it keeps the bar more vertical and close and in overhead lockout it makes for a much more secure position on the traps
so you internally rotate shoulders but still keep lats engaged? Are you still supposed to feel like youre "bending" the bar outwards?
Goddamn this REALLY good. Came at perfect timing too. Just got singles back in the program.
When you've tried hook grip on day 1 and never had any issue ever lol still watched the whole video
My "issue" is not having the confidence to hook grip pass a certain weight trashhold
i wonder if training plate pinches is a good idea for hook grip, because most of the weight is resting close to the tip of the fingers?
personally since being able to pinch 25kgs for 1 minute ive never failed a lift due to grip again
I hook everything since I started heavy lifting. I don´t feel anything anymore... I'm not just talking about my thumbs
So how much discomfort should I be feeling before I get used to it? I have a high tolerance for pain so I don't wanna push through the wrong kinda pain and injure myself.
Sean talks about letting the arms dangle and not gripping the bar too tight until the lift is initiated, but I'm wondering how I get the slack pulled out the bar like that. This method initially helped me to start pulling more hook grip, but now I'm running into this slack issue any help?
wowza
I do understand the points that been said. However not sure this will work with short limb guy like myself. Ive short arm & fingers. But tried Bryce method of acrossing the thumbs. That's work for me
Can you show me what you mean or link a video ?
I have small hands and I hook grip like Sean. At one point, though, I was digging my thumbs way in and was constantly tearing skin while having to endure so much pain. This way works so much better.
What if my thumb doesn’t grip the knurling because of my narrowish grip? Will hook still work?
