Three key recommendations I have for a powerlifter beginning to train for jump goals are: 1) Gradually progress volume and intensity of jumps. 2) Lay down a foundation of low intensity ankle-dominant plyometrics (particularly for improving approach jump performance) and do not neglect direct calf training. 3) Utilize dynamic effort style squat and deadlift training with accommodating resistance and a low proximity to failure in order to enhance strength speed (especially at more extended knee and hip joint angles) while regularly practicing squat and deadlift technique. As someone who consistently performed powerlifting style training (squatted 445lb and sumo deadlifted 600lb with straps but did not compete in a meet) for 4 years and then focused on jump and dunk goals while maintaining strength for over 2.5 years, I learned the importance of #1 and #2 the hard way. Presently jump training has increased my approach vertical jump to 36” and broad jump to 9’8.5”, but tendinopathies were a challenging obstacle to overcome for about 2 years. Someone who has very high max strength has the potential to jump high and consequently land from a high height with little jump training. When starting jump training, progress can also occur fairly rapidly, allowing you to expose your tendons to a high magnitude of high velocity loading in excess of their load tolerances. With a gradual increase in jump training volume and intensity, patellar and Achilles tendons can effectively adapt over time, but an abrupt increase in high velocity loading may prompt tendinopathies to develop without initially producing pain. Tendinopathies are to jumpers as low back injuries are to powerlifters. What may begin as a mild nuisance that can be trained through can progress into a major hinderance that can affect impede optimal training for multiple macrocycles. The best jumper or powerlifter is the athlete who can consistently and effectively train for multiple years while remaining healthy, not the athlete who can increase performance most rapidly in the initial few months but then becomes injured from the excessively high training stressors.
I’m very much looking forward to my boy John Downing making his comeback soon in the 83s, and hitting comp PRs, after contributing so much to the sport as a whole while accomplishing other life goals.
1:20 Candito, there is a Spaniard RUclipsr, he is one of the best in the industr for spanish speakers and he did exactly this. He share his journey to the world "heaviest" pull up on RUclips . That happened a few years a go. If you would like to take a look at it, you can find him as powerexplosive. A collab between you two would be something amazing. I had been following you both from the beginning .
Bro!!! I remember the 2013 Jonnie. Back then was when I first found out about upper/lower. Crazy to see how different the physiques are. Nothing wrong with either. But back then you legit looked like the real Wolverine. (He wasn’t fucking 6’2 and lean he was shorter and jacked)
1:46 There’s a dude in my gym that has arms bigger than his legs and Im pretty sure he does at least 2 arm workouts a week maybe even 3. Ironicly he curls in the squat rack.
Sick idea with the weighted chin up! Really interested to see how you structure your training and if pulling exercises with a descending strength curve require any different programming approach…
Look into the StrongFirst TSC. One of the main movements is pullups and a lot of the people who compete for it within our system practice with a lot of weighted work. So yea, weighted pullup max has been a thing and approached in such a manner. We also have the Beast Tamer which is a pullup, pistol squat, and strict press all with 48kg for men, 32kg for ladies so there's a lot of programming out there specifically for that as well. Most of the training is done within the 70-75% range for a long period of time before a max attempt. Hope some of this info helps you find some nuggets out there to help your process!
I'm really looking forward to the channel! I too recently hit 29 and my goals have been very different from 5 years ago. I quit training then from life changes and I'm finally back in a place where I can train again. My goal this time around isn't purely numbers either, but my goal is to see how heavy I can get without a belt. I'm also doing more cardio and hypertrophy this time around. It's interesting how priorities change in different seasons of life. Been starting with your beginner power/hypertrophy linear program and I've been loving it. Thanks for what you do man!
I’m a big fan of weighed calisthenics. I personally prefer weighted pull-ups vs chins and dips are my favorite. Best so far is 140 pull-up and 160 dip. 4 plate dip is a big goal of mine. Then I’ll move on to 200+. Both achieved at 195-205lb bw.
I’ve also treated a few upper body pulls like weighted pull-ups as main pl movements for the last few years, and I’ve found programming to be confusing, so this new project will be helpful to learn from
I figured. I saw a post from you on instagram well over a year ago where you said "this is the first time doing direct upper back work in over a year." That was when I realized your change in physique was due to you getting extremly specific with your training and abandoning the "bodybuilding fluff". Kinda unfair because your "how I used to look" physique is my "I'm tryna get like you" physique and you could definitely get it back easily if you wanted. Fuck lol
@jon arthur Yes, you definitely lose that kind of muscle mass when you stop training those muscles for YEARS. This transformation didnt happen over night, it took years for him to lose that amount of muscle. Very possible if you stop training to look jacked. We are literally talking about a 9 year difference here. Anyone could shrink in that amount of time. Also, him being on steroids makes zero since when he has literally added 300 lbs to his total. You don't stop juicing and gain 300 lbs on your total while being natty, the fact is Jonnie wasn't on gear in the first place. He just looked really damn good and it's hard for you all to accept.
@jon arthur Cool, let's say this fantasy where you are a "lot bigger" than him is real. If you stopped doing any kind of bodybuilding work and ONLY focused on the big 3 for 9 YEARS, you'd 100% lose a fuck ton of muscle. Natural muscle takes times to go away but it's not gonna last you 9 years. Jonnie losing his aesthetic look during that time makes sense. He wasn't doing curls, shoulder presses, pullups, ect. Just squat, bench, and deadlifts mainly. Most natty lifters are going to lose muscle doing that
@jon arthur Yeah and I bet your physique is garbage because the average joe with average genetics will not look like a bodybuilder only doing the big 3, hence the change in Jonnie's physique. YOU don't understand the fact that "bodybuilding" accessories are necessary for most people to look jacked, and when they stop doing them guess what? They lose size, that's why Jonnie looks so different. He's only focused on the main lifts and not bodybuilding like he used to. Go look at his old videos, he used to do curls, shoulder presses, weighted chinups, etc. Those movements put mass on you and he stop doing them, so of course he'd shrink. Post your physique, you might be "bigger" than Jonnie but I'm willing to.bet your physique is similar because you don't do any bodybuilding/hypertrophy work. Most natural lifters have to because doing the big 3 isn't enough to be jack, you're not covering so many bases with just squat, bench, and deadlift unless you have premium genetics which I doubt.
@jon arthur overlord is tight. It’s well documented if you stop doing all the bodybuilding type stuff and focus on strength you’ll lose size. It’s exactly why people always give bodybuilders shit for being big but not as strong as they look vs functional strength that powerlifters get like Johnnie.
@jon arthur nah your the one being dumb af here not anyone else. If you reduce volume and intensity/frequency in arms and delts or whatever ofcourse your going to lose size. It’s pretty well documented. That’s why you get all the newbs who get into SS 5x5 who get stronger and a huge torso with twig arms that look like shit/ a block.
This was a good video. Appreciate it. Long time ago I would have said keep pushing your total and stop looking in the mirror. But things change. I think your making a good choice. Looking forward to your progress
Man!!! The last time I watched you WAS back during the dunking video era. You inspired me to train my jump and for some reason I didn’t sub and stopped watching much RUclips fitness. I’m in a similar place where I’ve let being almost 29 sort of dad bod me even though I still routinely hit the gym. Looking forward to seeing your progress, I’m motivated already. I’m subbed now!
Good to see you uploading frequently again Jonnie. I really believe if you focused on RUclips your channel would've been a million plus easy. Those year long breaks really hurts channel growth. I'm just glad you're finally back. This channel will explode.
wow, this really shows what specificity and genetical differences can make, I am literally a fucking twig, my overall lifting experience is a bit bigger but it was not consistent by any means, I have been lifting consistently for 1.5 years, I can bench 85 kg, squat 120 kg, deadlift 155 kg, and i weight 77 kg, at 188 cm tall (6 feet 2 inches i think), but my weighted chinup is a clean 35 kg, that just blew my fucking mind, the fact that specificity of training matters soo much, that I am literally stronger than you in a lift, it trully changed my perspective to see this.
Dude I'm doing this right now too! I started at about 185 and now I'm under 172! Like you I was displeased with my body comp after years of focusing on powerlifting. Now I'm slimming down and super happy with the results.
@@CeroAshura Depends. I weigh more at 190 so I’m pulling up more weight, but by weighing more it also means I have more muscle mass to use (in theory). Edit: in short it seems like the more lean body mass you have the more total weight you can pull up but I need to emphasize “lean”. If the extra weight is junk weight it will hinder not help.
I know he didn't really say it but weighted calisthenics has been slept on by a lot of strength athletes. I'm really glad that Candito is going to be treating the chin up like the strength movement that it is. If you look at any of the top-weighted calisthenics guys in Europe they are beyond jacked and specialize in weighted dips and pullups generally. The strength transfer for the deadlift and bench is there and I'm glad someone as popular as Candito is bringing this fact into the powerlifting community. Strength is strength. Thank you Jonnie
@CanditoTrainingHQ I've had the weighted pull-up and shoulder press as if they were the big three, so basically for me its 'the big 5', for quite some time now. It helps if you care about body appearance too. Happy to see you do this kind of movement!

How did you treat your tendonopathies?
This is quality content J-Can. Would love to see your channel back in the mix again
I think alpha destiny has done similar stuff like this; would be dope if y’all talked and worked together to hit this goal
They kinda have before. Alex was the one who motivated Jonnie to test his 1rm on the overheadpress.
6:16 your dog is such a king lol. Best of luck with the new training goals, Jonnie!
I’m very much looking forward to my boy John Downing making his comeback soon in the 83s, and hitting comp PRs, after contributing so much to the sport as a whole while accomplishing other life goals.
Scary how much sense you were talking in the last four minutes alone, Jonnie. Pure, honest observation- rare to hear that these days.
Bruh 34.5 inch standing vert is probably like 95 percentile in the nba draft combine and you did it untrained too
The difference is he's about a foot shorter than the average NBA player lol

You teased vertical leap work yeeeears ago, I'm glad it's finally back on the table!
You're an easy dude to like.
Got some of that pre-workout.
You are my favorite person in this platform Jonnie, keep up with that awesome content!

Basically the MCU crossover for the fitness industry
Love it man!! Been watching your channel for years now. Cool to see your goals changing
1:46 There’s a dude in my gym that has arms bigger than his legs and Im pretty sure he does at least 2 arm workouts a week maybe even 3. Ironicly he curls in the squat rack.
But does he curl 135? If he curls 135 then I think that’s ok for the squat rack. If it’s like the bar and two 10’s then he needs to leave.

Very good point about trade offs. Only veterans understand
You should train for a street of lifting competition, I think you would really enjoy it!
Thanks for what you do man!

you do motivate a ton of people, no doubt. thanks for all your great content 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
OG fans remember Beefcake Jonny. Glad to see a comeback.
That vert is insane, I’d love to see some dunk training content from you Jonnie
Incredible stuff man! Looking forward following your Journey!

I’ve also treated a few upper body pulls like weighted pull-ups as main pl movements for the last few years, and I’ve found programming to be confusing, so this new project will be helpful to learn from
I've found that you got to count your bodyweight plus the plates, that way planificación goes perfect.
Am 6ft2 and have a 18" vertical 😂 you should be able to clean alot if Mark rippetoe is correct
Het Johnny can powerclean 120 kg first try, 140 after a month and 150 in half a year.
He is everything RIP hates. A guy who refuses to GOMAD and YNDTP and is stronger than his own SS coaches.
A higher pull up bar where you start from a fully extended dead hang would look a lot more legit.
As an old timer at 38yrs I'm also on a return to imagined form from the past. Like to see you're a human like the rest of us. Keep on!

Really impressive to see you be so bold and concrete with your goals
I did 100 lb pull up at 190 BW. Could it be that after 5 years there is Finally a lift I can do more on than Jonnie?!
I did that at 170, is it more or less impressive
But v shred said that I should eat pizza and drink vodka
@CanditoTrainingHQ I've had the weighted pull-up and shoulder press as if they were the big three, so basically for me its 'the big 5', for quite some time now.
It helps if you care about body appearance too.
Happy to see you do this kind of movement!
