We just traveled with our cat from Missouri to Florida. Here’s a tip: To eliminate odor completely and keep the car clean, buy a shallow, long Tupperware container with a lid and use it as a litter box. Whenever the cat poops and pees, you can immediately clean the poop out and put the lid back on, or if you need to continue driving, just put the lid back on immediately and it will stop the smell.

Awesome video, thanks! Just a couple tips I wanted to add :) I like feline pine as a larger-grained litter. My cat’s already used to it but some cats don’t really like it and may need a transition period. Also I totally recommend leaving your carrier out leading up to the trip and getting your cat familiar with it (so they don’t associate it with stressful events). I give my kitty treats in it every day or two to make him go in it regularly. I just took him on his first little practice car ride and he did really well. I’m going to keep taking him on drives and slowly increase the duration so he knows that it doesn’t always have to mean going to the vet or a new home. I may also try letting him roam around the car while I’m driving but only if I know I can get him back in his crate (I have nightmares of him getting loose outside the car and chasing him around a gas station 😬)
I definitely agree with exposing them to the crate at all times. My cat loves to just sleep in it and basically treats it like another box. He's perfectly fine with his carrier
I envy you. Four years ago, we traveled from AR to NY state with two cats and it was a nightmare. The drive took two fulls days. One cat cried most of the way and when we got to the hotel, neither one of them would eat, drink or use their makeshift litter box we made. And now we are talking about another possible move, maybe to AZ or CA and I just don't see how they would tolerate that. The travel carriers we bought for them were much larger than the usual ones we use to take them to the vet, so they had plenty of room. It was quite traumatizing for them. Or maybe more so for me and my husband!
Thank you for this video. Wife & I are moving to Las Vegas from Minnesota next spring and have 2 cats, 1 dog. It shall be interesting. We’ve debated on just getting one big carrier and putting a small litter box inside it.. not sure…

Yeah so you put harness on the cat and then put it in the kennel. At the security, you just put all your carry-on’s through and hold on tight to the harness leash before you open the kennel. Thanks so much for your tips. I'll be traveling alone from MN to FL with my two cats and Chihuahua. Temari305 I just drove from Nevada to Florida with my cat. Just me and her. 3 1/2 days in a car! I kept her in the carrier while driving because she was all over the car. Trying to get up under the dash, under my feet, etc. Just not safe. I also got some calming treats and spray at the pet store that seemed to help a little. I found a list of pet friendly hotels online before leaving, so I knew what hotel chains were accepting. I got her a smaller litter box than her usual one, just to make it easier going in and out of hotels. I also kept it behind the seat, because I would let her out of the carrier when I stopped for lunch, gas, etc. I would pull over, sit in the car and eat while she stretched her legs some. Then back in her carrier when it was time to drive again. I never let her out of the carrier unless we stayed in the car together, or were in the hotel room. The first day was rough. She screamed the entire time, and drove me to insanity. I only drove about 4-5 hours that first day to get her used to what was happening, by the 3rd day she was in routine. Car carrier by day, free roam of the hotel room at night. I think letting her roam around the hotel room was what saved us both. It gave her a chance to roam and me a chance to relax at night from driving all day. Hope this helps. Good luck and safe travels.
As I told my cat when I left Cali for Georgia. and it will be the same conversation when I leave Georgia back for California. he is not allowed in the driver's seat until he gets a driver's license!
i bought a collapsible small travel litter box. Have you heard of those? I plan on putting her in a huge pet tent with seatbelt straps. But I was hoping she would have the opportunity to do her thing too. This will only be a 5 hour trip though.
I think often car journeys mean the vets, which can mean pain or discomfort of some description. Therefore, it probably is to do with association, i.e. car journey=pain. You can see why some might kick off!
Hi! I truly appreciate this video. We are moving from NJ to Tennessee next month & this is my #1 issue. I’ve been trying to leash train Dax, not going well. Luckily he is pretty darn regular where his poopin is concerned. I’m going to use your recommendations. Thank you so much.
Most experts say to not let the cats out in the car. I'm going to be travelling from Maryland to Florida with 3 cats during this pandemic. I've accustomed them to a super large carrier with a bed in it. I'm thinking maybe I will keep a seperate small carrier with the litter box.
Hi! I saw your comment from 2 years ago. We are driving our FOUR cats from CA to NY in a few months and it’s the biggest source of stress for us. We are looking for tips on moving multiple cats. Any advice you ca offer from your experience? Thank you!
Meanwhile cat 🐈 doesn't care about trips appreciates the fact you took the time to take him or her out tries to sleep for 3.5 days 😴 you just keep waking him or her up 🤣😇😇
So your biggest tip is to travel with Pippin? Just kidding :) What a sweet cat. We're getting ready to move back to CT from Colorado and one of my cats is just this side of feral. He will be a challenge.
I drive everywhere with my cat since I travel for work and he scratches the back of the seats. So I kinda Macgyvered one of those cheap scratch boards that you hang vertically on your door to the back of my seat and it works for him and my seats are torn to shreds
I’m afraid my cat will dart out of the car when I stop at a rest stop or when I need to load her up for the hotel. Doesn’t sound like you have that issue. I’m not looking at driving the distance you are. But frequent trips from Id, to Wa, to Ca, Az, Ks, Ut. So it could be as far- but in a rotation staying with people for weeks to months on end.

Traveling from Seattle to Little Rock, Arkansas. Taking 2 cats. It’s a 33 hour drive, most likely will take me 5 days, only one driver. Im nervous. Can I even do this? I don’t have family nor friends to help, otherwise I would do ground shipping. Planning to do this by end of August.
I’m contemplating travel with my cat. Something not addressed is how you manage stops when the cat is not in a carrier and how to prevent them from darting out of the car as soon as you open the door? Or is it really just not an issue? I will be a solo traveler and won’t have another person to assist.
I may have all of you beat... In a month I'm traveling with 4 children under the age of 9, one of whom is a 5 month old, from Texas to Iowa with 3 adult cats and four kittens... wish me luck.
Joey Dinero I’m not by no means knowing about traveling with cats, although I have seen most people posting that they are nervous or terrified or you name it. My suggestion would be for you to be stress free and relaxed, and I’m pretty sure your cats will fall in line. Maybe practice runs with them in the car for some outings. And if all else fails, drug em! Kidding, although they do make calming aids that are natural and work well
My cat uses a litter box. I bought throw away huge roaster Pan from dollar tree and big bag of chicken feed plus black plastic bags. After she poops I pull over to nearest gas station or rest stop and pick it up using potty bag. Then poop bag closed inside shopping bag with other trash. Toss it out in regular trash outdoors.
The only thing that works with very frisky, inquisitive cats is water- a spray bottle with a forceful squirt will train any cat where to not go. They hate it. Not a mist, a single stream, usually 3x's same place and they get it.
Devin Kildow wow I’m visiting my aunt in Washington I’m form California and my cat is my baby but I really want to take him since nobody can watch him and my brother said to just leave him here with tons of food I kicked his butt ;-;
Thank you for this video. It was very helpful! Good luck to everyone who is traveling with their cats. I really hope it goes smoothly for you! I'm moving across country in about a month with my cat and dog. And then again back home in about about a year after. ***Update: they did great! Both times 😍 we stayed in hotels along the way both cross country trips. I think that helped a lot because my cat only wanted to use her litter box in the hotel.
I'm sure it's not relevant for you now, given this video is 2 years old, but I saw in another video that they used a plastic storage box with a lid for the litter. Handy for confining the smell I imagine 🙊
Lucky for you to have a calm kitty like pippen. My cat (PJ) is not so much on car rides. So what I was told to do is get a calming spray that reduces the cat's stress with some hormone of some kind. Just ask a pet store person for the "all natural" calming stuff. And it smells nice. Just so you know there is something available in case you need it.
My boyfriend and I are about to road trip the Western states and I've been begging him to let my cat come with us, I've been so worried that he wont enjoy it but I'm gonna do my best to get him well used to the jeep before we even start. I am not going to force him to take this 3 month trip with us if he doesn't seem happy, so I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure he can handle it and even enjoy it hopefully, otherwise we will have to turn around when he's had enough.
My cat is also named pipp'n he's a boy though and in a week I'm moving from PA to TX and he's a good boy but I'm very nervous for him with this long car ride it's only a two seater truck and the passenger seat will be all his shelf on the door to sun bathe fan on dashboard so he's cool bed on the seat to sleep and litter box on the floor but I still can't help but worry about my boy
My cat is fine until we ride on our car but as soon as we use taxi to travel, she gets scared and won't stay quiet. I'm so confused what to do I have a journey and the vets here never prescribe medicine for cats with anxiety for travel purpose.
pippin looks amazingly happy. my poor cat pal just did a 1 hour drive for a move to an adjacent state and has been like O-O for days now.
She is doing a little better now, week later

i bought a collapsible small travel litter box. Have you heard of those? I plan on putting her in a huge pet tent with seatbelt straps. But I was hoping she would have the opportunity to do her thing too. This will only be a 5 hour trip though.
Thanks for the tips. I'm going to be travelling with my two soon and this helps.
I’m going from GA to Santa Fe NM so thank you from the future
Thank you for so many tips! Simply awesome! I am moving from Sydney to Adelaide with my cat and this will be so helpful
My cat says "hi" too, for real. He's so cute.
Thanks for the info. I am moving to North Carolina from PHX with 2 cats.
You're really sweet to your cat to the point if I was offered by some weird force the opportunity to be a cat with an owner like you, I'd go for it.
Loved this video as traveling in my car with my cat to California will be in my near future! Thank you and loved your beautiful cat! :) xoxo
Aww Pippin is so beautiful!! Thanks for making this helpful video, also loved your rainbow hair 😄
am going on vacation from new orleans to Houston for the new year and for the first time am driving with my ragdoll luffy and i hope he'll love it
I drive everywhere with my cat since I travel for work and he scratches the back of the seats. So I kinda Macgyvered one of those cheap scratch boards that you hang vertically on your door to the back of my seat and it works for him and my seats are torn to shreds
Trying to prepare my kitten for college. Driving from Arizona to New York in the next few years.
Buy the top entry litter box from petco. It will catch all the litter when the cat exits
I said pippin for like 3 days now. Finally watching this all the way through.
You sound really chill thanks for the help i have just gotten a cat so its gonna be hard
Shutup
Thank you for the tips! Love the shirt!
My family is moving from Texas to Florida, it’s not as long of a journey but we have 3 cats to move.

We have FOUR we are going to be traveling with 😫🙈🙈 I just hope the babies stay some what comfy and stress free 😔 It is nerve wrecking.
witzkott how did it go for you? I'm about to also travel with four cats. I'm really stress about it. 😟
Hugues Metel I'm just traveling with three baby cats and I know they'll be crying , luckily on 5 hour drive 🙏
I may have all of you beat... In a month I'm traveling with 4 children under the age of 9, one of whom is a 5 month old, from Texas to Iowa with 3 adult cats and four kittens... wish me luck.
TexasGirl hey how do I train my 5 feral cats who love me to travel in the car? I'm stressed tf out smh
Kidding, although they do make calming aids that are natural and work well
I get a sedative from the vet and it works PURRfectly
My cat uses a litter box. I bought throw away huge roaster Pan from dollar tree and big bag of chicken feed plus black plastic bags. After she poops I pull over to nearest gas station or rest stop and pick it up using potty bag. Then poop bag closed inside shopping bag with other trash. Toss it out in regular trash outdoors.
Do you have a video that shows how to set car-boundaries with the cat, to let the cat know where they are not allowed to go?
The only thing that works with very frisky, inquisitive cats is water- a spray bottle with a forceful squirt will train any cat where to not go. They hate it. Not a mist, a single stream, usually 3x's same place and they get it.
I’ll be moving from Texas to Washington in a few weeks, and this was very helpful! Thanks for the tips!
Devin Kildow wow I’m visiting my aunt in Washington I’m form California and my cat is my baby but I really want to take him since nobody can watch him and my brother said to just leave him here with tons of food I kicked his butt ;-;
Devin Kildow also 4 people are going in a small car so that’s a problem
How did it go?! I'll be going from Texas to Oregon.
SinfulAdmiration I didn’t end up going due to work hours
Lmao I'm driving from Washington to Texas right now with my cat!
I have to drive 1800 miles in a van with 4 rescue cats….they are between 10 and 13 years old…
Thank you for this video.
How did the move went with the cat
MY cat’s name is Pippin! She just turned 7. So damn cool to see another Pips in the world 🤘🏻😸
So I was watching this because I am going to Florida with my cat ,very soon and I just realized that I am flying there. Crap
I'm sure it's not relevant for you now, given this video is 2 years old, but I saw in another video that they used a plastic storage box with a lid for the litter. Handy for confining the smell I imagine 🙊
This is crazy because I’m moving from California to Georgia 😂
wooden pallets as litter keeps the car clean
I'm moving to Georgia from California, I'm so nervous about taking her cross country
Same here. I’m moving to Florida from Nebraska in a few days with two cats
Where did you put the litter pans.
Why on earth would you bring your cat on vacation??
Did you also carry the litterbox into the hotel rooms? I need to bring my cat on a roadtrip but I don’t know how to handle this.
What is the thing that is harnssed to your car? Im interested for my own trip
Thanks for a great video!! I'm so worried about bring a cat in a car I want to be over prepared for it.
Do i have to bring my pet papers with me while travelling?
ha ha, the cat is so chilled
Thank you so much for your very informative video. I am going to hopefully train my 5 yr old cat to ride in my car.
You remind me of two of my best friends and I love you so much💖💖💖
Dear Lord, You could have said all this in 2 minutes! 🥱
I have two large fat cats to bring with me on a 4 day trip....
I will also travel with my cat for 14 hrs please give some tips to keep her normal .
My cat is fine until we ride on our car but as soon as we use taxi to travel, she gets scared and won't stay quiet. I'm so confused what to do I have a journey and the vets here never prescribe medicine for cats with anxiety for travel purpose.
I like what you did there at 3.32-'we can usually cat shit' 😏
Thank you,this was soooooo helpful.😺
Why am I watching this? I don't even have a cat haha..
That makes 2 of us but I like both dogs and cats so
I just figured I've watch out of curiosity 😁 and Pippin is a beautiful kitty 👍

Maybe cos cats are cute LOL
