Mazda for sure. For the same money, you're getting the tried and true Toyota hybrid powertrain(the one thing they're truly excellent on), but a more premium vehicle. Mazda even manages to offer more features for the same money. Obviously it will also have better dynamics and a more planted driving experience. Toyota's resale will come into play, but the ownership experience will probably be better on the Mazda.
Mazda is missing a heated steering wheel and spare tire. Toyota also comes with up to 10 years of free roadside and emergency assistance. Mazda will continue to use this older Toyota hybrid system while Toyota will offer the 5th gen hybrid system in 2026 with even more power and fuel efficiency. Can’t wait! 😊
@ToyotaChrisWI no heads up display, cooled seats, power fold mirrors, fake leather, terrible JBL sound, tinny sound on door closures, and partial LED taillamps on the Toyota. The Mazda may actually come out on top keeping this "older" system if the new engines that Toyota is developing is of any indication(Corolla GRs catching fire, Tundra/Lexus imploding engines).
The Mazda is sharper looking, has a nicer interior, and tighter handling making it more fun to drive. The Mazda is also 200 lbs heavier and that wasn’t discussed as to why its 0-60 is .5 or so seconds slower and 2 mpg less fuel efficient, but other reviews I’ve seen have clocked 40mpg and 41 mpg overall signifying the EPA estimates aren’t necessarily a diehard gauge for fuel economy. Also, how is a car with faux leather and non ventilated seats for $700 more going to score 4.5 points higher? That’s more important to me than the backup camera or less aesthetic looking touchscreen in the Toyota. Mazda for my win!
Essentially, when you choose Mazda, you're choosing the 4th generation RAV4 - the engine, transmission, and all the high voltage stuffing is stuffed from the RAV4 XA40. All in all, that's neither bad nor good. Not bad in terms of reliability, not good in terms of investment, as we don't know what kind of stuffing Toyota has prepared for the new generation XA60. Perhaps the 6th generation will prove to be trouble-free and much more efficient than all the previous ones, or perhaps it will be ordinary and won't be able to pull over the buyers' recognition. I haven't seen, to my regret, the CX-50 suspension, perhaps it's just as inherited from the XA40, but perhaps not. In my understanding nickel-metal hydride battery (NiMH) battery on the 4th generation, although lower capacity than lithium on the 5th, but relatively inexpensive and quite reliable in terms of loss of capacity at low temperatures and in general its life.
@ for me it’s driving engagement all day long. Both are reliable brands. One is a mundane, daily driver and has the style to boot. The other is more of a drivers car. As we know technology is ever changing and striving to get better, but whether you lease the car or hold onto it for 10+ years, none of the other stuff really matters if it’s been a great. Car to you. It only matters to those who purchase it and change them out at 4-5 years. Personally my view is, once the car has been paid off for a few years it doesn’t owe you anything and far newer tech is out anyway.
Mazda. It’s just as reliable. Japanese maker themselves. Plus everyone and their moms have a RAV4 or had one before. Not everyone has had a CX50 ! I like to be different and driving a CX50 would be different in a good way. lol
Cant go wrong with either, Mazda is more stylish and luxurious feeling interior, and sloghtly more engaging to drive. Rav4 more utilitarian and practical.
Great comparison video! I didn't drive the CX-50 before I bought my 24 RAV4 XSE Hybrid (a year ago next week). The fuel economy was so much better in the RAV since Mazda didn't have a hybrid at the time. I've enjoyed my RAV4 but it definitely would have been a harder decision if I was buying now instead of then. I do have to say, I absolutely love the 360 cameras on the RAV and have really appreciated the small size of the RAV. I feel like I can park it just about anywhere. I love the look of the CX-50 a little better and the sportier handling and nicer interior would be major pluses. Also, when it comes down to Bose and JBL, I haven't heard a JBL system that I like near as much as a BOSE system... so Mazda would win there too. They both could use to make the interiors quieter. I know that's one of the complaints I've noticed most when seeing comments about the RAV... based on the cabin sound test, looks like Mazda faired just slightly worse... gotta improve on that.
Your comment is pretty much how I feel about these two cars. Three drawbacks (for me) with the CX-5...slightly less mpg, a little larger (not as easy to park), and lack of a 360 degree camera and digital rear view mirror. These are features I wish the Mazda had, but not a deal breaker either. If I buy the CX-5 Premium hybrid that would save me $4700 over the Rav4 XSE hybrid I ordered 3 months ago (I'm still waiting). The Mazda is on the dealer lot and ready to buy right now. Most likely I'll go with the CX-50 hybrid. I also like the body styling better.
There's nothing boring about the exterior of the RAV4. It's styling was considered radical when the current gen came out compared to the previous gen. A total redesign is coming in 2025.
@SME5724 if you think being fun to drive is all about the engine, you don't have a clue. If you paid attention to the video, they said the Mazda handling made it more fun to drive and the seats are more firm while the RAV4 feels more comfortable overall.
IMO you shouldn't be giving Mazda the 1/2 point for having larger 19 inch wheels/tires as this is a negative when it comes to ride and more important for these vehicles, fuel economy.
I am a die hard Toyota fan but recently Mazda has been impressing me, especially with the cx-50. I am really on the fence on getting a cx-50 vs a toyota, ugh. When TCCN says that Mazda made a good engine with Toyota in the cx-50 then that should mean something
Because of the tried & true Toyota hybrid system in the CX-50, the Mazda has now moved way up my list of replacement cars. My only concern is will it be made in that Alabama plant where all the troubles have been coming from (i.e., the metal shavings in the engines causing engine seizures)? Toyota quality has been slipping in the last 2 years so what everyone says about "reliability" are from cars made 10 or 15 years ago. And were those vehicles made in Japan or America? Can we say that 10 years from today will the 2024 and 2025's still be rated high reliability??
That Mazda is absolutely beautiful both inside and out. The Rav is pretty unattractive IMO. It looks boxy and clunky. Great comparison review guys! ✌🏻👍🏻✌🏻

I think the Rav4 would win my vote. I love the look of the Mazda and the interior looks positively plush, but to feel more imperfections in the road surface is a deal-breaker for me.
For me, reliability and resale are the most important factors in a buying decision. Remember the total cost of your vehicle is not just the initial price you pay but, the initial price minus your resale value plus maintenance cost. The Rav 4 wins hands down in this area.
You should do a sound level when accelerating. The Toyota seemed to have a much louder engine sound when compared to the more throaty Mazda- it might have pumped in sound.
Won’t help. Toyotas so far behind to the point where they can redesign the RAV4 500,000 times over and over and still fail miserably to compete with the current generation competition.
Maybe someone can weigh in on this- Both cars seem to be similar in terms of space in the drivers seat. Comparing both cars to the Forester, these two cars seem cramped. Visibility is also a factor. For a taller driver, it seems like I have to duck down in order to have a clear view out of the front windshield. So for this reason alone, the Forester remains one of the top sellers. Anyone out there agree?
I drive several different cars throughout the year and the Rav4 2024 was one of the cheapest feeling and looking. Unless you get the limited or higher Toyota feels cheap. Mazda just feels premium. Although i don't understand why Mazda did not offer heated steering wheel. Makes no sense. If money was no option in this situation i would get the Rav 4. But i prefer the gas version of the Mazda over the rav4.
Both excellent choices , as is Subaru Forester and Honda CRV . IMHO it rally comes down to brand preference and real determination won’t be know until the 7-15 year ownership cycle is done…..
Toyota gas improved build quality but it’s not their strong suit. In a brand new 2024 Sienna, the windows rattle with moderate music. They do make awesome hybrid powertrains
I don't care too much about the full digital desplay but found the seats so unfomfortable on the CX 5 which I believe are the same on the CX-50. Mazda put great seets on the CX-90 though.
Seats are different between the CX-5 and CX-50. MOST reviews I've seen that have a basis for comparing them rate the CX-5 seats as better. With seats though, YMMV is very, very much the case.
I’d take the CX-50 hands down. Toyota would have my money if they bring the Crown Sport to the US alternatively, but I don’t see that happening realistically.
I think anybody watching this needs to make their own totals based on things that matter to THEM. As an example, I find the touchscreen of the RAV4 to be a NEGATIVE in comparison to the dial on the CX-50. No points for heated steering wheel, because I don't care about that one way or the other, ditto the 360 camera. Rear seat space does matter to me, so it still gets scored, as does total cargo. One thing I'd like to see is the ACTUAL dimensions back there, not simply the volume. From where I sit, the CX-50 beats the RAV4, BUT the NEXT RAV4 has a good chance of beating it.
In the case of these two vehicles tested, they both share the same hybrid engine and e-cvt transmission, sourced from Toyota. Mazda uses their 6 speed automatic on the non-hybrid versions of most of their vehicles. I agree that the Mazda feels more premium than the Toyota.
I don't doubt that Toyota is the #2 in reliability however I'm very surprised about the below average reliability rating for Mazda! I have only had Mazda cars for the last 30 years because of their reliability and ride quality. Never have had a single issue with any of my cars except regular maintenance. Personally I find the Rav4 too ugly outside and inside to go for it. Those radio knobs are hideous! LOL
If you are going to rate electronics for safety the Mazda wins by eyes on the road. If to compare crash tests for safety then Mazda wins. Toyota and Lexus have a major safety problem with that chassis. Safety doesn’t seem to be your concern. Many points lost on your review.
Yes, they're related. Their smiles are different, but they have similar dimples. FWIW, the CX-50 does 0-60 in about 7.6-8s. The non-turbo ICE CX-50 takes about 8.5-10s to get up to speed, while the turbo is just under 7s. So the price point for the hybrid, lying between the two ICE versions, reflects acceleration.
Won’t happen. The next rav4 will be underwhelming, dated, cramped, poorly built, noisy, overpriced etc. Mazda is already superior to the next 10 generations of the rav4
Toyota dropped the V6 option for the RAV4 over a decade ago, and I don't see them bringing it back. The trend for almost all auto manufacturers except those that are high dollar, strictly high performance, is to reduce the size of their engines, along with offering hybrid and/or EV systems. That little V6 RAV4 back in the day was sweet though, and quick.
Depends a lot on your priorities. Mazda is so much more attractive, both inside and out, has a better sound system, heads up display, and real leather seats, with ventilation in the front seats It also has a different suspension and handling setup, with less body lean, a better weighted steering feel, and will be more fun to drive for most people. Toyota has a softer ride, fully digital gauge package, touch screen for navigation, and heated steering wheel. It has smaller tires/wheels, which might be one of the things that contributes to it's softer ride and slightly better fuel mileage. It also has a little more cargo and passenger space, even though it's not quite as long as the Mazda. They share the same engine/transmission, so there shouldn't be much difference in their performance or long term reliability, and the prices are similar. The reason I would choose the Mazda is for the hands-down more attractive and better quality interior, the classy looking exterior styling, and the better sound system. I live in the South, so ventilated seats are also important, and the fact that they are real leather is a plus. I also like the HUD that displays information on the windshield in front of you that lets you keep your attention focused on the road. I think the Toyota is less attractive, both inside and out, and the interior quality looks less premium. The heated steering wheel is far less important to me than ventilated seats, and I prefer the looks of the Mazda tires/wheels, even if they do cost a couple of mpgs. Both vehicles have as much space as I need, and the better handling of the Mazda for a slightly firmer ride is a tradeoff I'm willing to make. Even though the comparison in this video ranked the RAV4 higher than the CX50, the Mazda ticks off a lot more buttons that are more important to me.

@@michaelvella8511 I believe they are a different design on the CX50. The CX-5 is an older design.
Seats are different between the CX-5 and CX-50. MOST reviews I've seen that have a basis for comparing them rate the CX-5 seats as better. With seats though, YMMV is very, very much the case.
Thanks guys
I’d take the CX-50 hands down. Toyota would have my money if they bring the Crown Sport to the US alternatively, but I don’t see that happening realistically.
Base model- Mazda wins no question.
Well comparison,it is better to include the time to 60mile from stop for all vehicles
Please do Mazda CX-50 Hybrid vs CRV Hybrid
Toyota always!
Mazda! It’s not dated!
toyota has 150k warranty for hybrid, mazda has 100k
Mazda all day
Mazda feels more premium than Toyota. I will definitely go for Mazda. Plus traditional transmission is better than CVT
LOL
CX5 in a landslide. Beautiful and athletic. Great quality and reasonable pricing.
Honestly I don't think that's fair you have to compare the cx70 to the RAV4
It is fair, and the CX-70 is a significantly larger car. It compares to the Highlander.
Why? The CX50 is already bigger and heavier than the RAV4. Why would you want to compare the RAV4 to an even bigger Mazda model?
If you are going to rate electronics for safety the Mazda wins by eyes on the road. If to compare crash tests for safety then Mazda wins. Toyota and Lexus have a major safety problem with that chassis. Safety doesn’t seem to be your concern. Many points lost on your review.
the rating is a bit uneven though. not sure i agree with this. a 2 inch diff in room gives toyota what a point? come on lol
No way, I would prefer to get CRV hybrid 🎉
If you want to enjoy driving, get a Mazda
not sure why TOYOTA would supply a direct competition with their secret ingredient: their reliable hybrid unit.....seems like a bad business decision
Toyota owns a piece of Mazda brand that's why they're willing to supply parts so they only benefit if Mazda benefits
CX50.
According to your scoring... What? Is the redesigned Rav-4 going to score THREE times as much, now??
Secretly? Must be the worst kept secret in history.
I test drove them both and meh 😒 I wasn’t excited by either.
Rav4 💯🙌🏽
Wish the new/next generation RAV-4 had the V6 option alongside the Hybrid instead of just a 4-Cylinder setup
That little V6 RAV4 back in the day was sweet though, and quick.
mazda too small for me
Mazda with CVT, No way
The Tailights of the cx50 is what turns me away and the low height
Rav4 wins
of course Mazda! - it's a King! #2 is Subaru!
@@BSBS-gk4iy what?
Toyota gave mazada old hybrid power train as it as a new 5th gen.with the new rav4 redesign coming up it will be top of the segment again
The so-called old hybrid power train is excellent.
CX 50 a performance vehicle/feel? RAV 4 all day long.
Toyotas are perfect for people with lower expectations and standards.
Oh pleaseeeeeeeee!
Toyota car seat is ugly
Drove a RAV4 for 8 months, and I don't have to even drive the Mazda to know it's miles better than this dull and cheap rattlebox.
Mazda every day. With the cx50 hybrid in existence the rav4 has ostensibly been discontinued
I'd skip them both and go for a Tucson Hybrid
LOL
The video clearly shows the Rav4 as the better overall car. Lol why is everyone going the opposite.... must be mazda owners 😅
Looks like the CX50 with its CVT is a worst Rav4, and not a real Mazda.
@gio957.... It's ECVT. Totally different from regular CVT.
Neither!
Mazda is the low-end Japanese vehicle next to Mitsubishi.. Below par reliability and resale .Outdated looks and drivetrain. Vehicles for people with low credit scores..😕
Really? Mazda has a great track record of good reliability. What cave have you been living in?
W a p p r e e 💕💕💕💕💕 the day 💗
