    I personally can't decide
    I wanna say 90's because i grew up with it and im a bit biased, however i also love the new one because of how close it is to Tove's actual work
    And yea, all the other ones are just hilarious. *Especially the russian one where Snufkin is a duck-*

    Personally for me every adaptation has its own unique charm about it the 90s show has this Studio Gibley feeling with its beautiful backgrounds and calming atmosphere while the 2019 show it’s more of a story driven peace with a focus on its characters and a really good soundtrack , fuzzy felt has a sort of nostalgic vibe to it even if I haven’t grown up with the show but it screams 80s British kids show and as an Australian most of the shows I watched as a kid were from Britain and it has that kind of feeling , and the 1960 show is just bat shit insane

      Ironically, the 60s show actually had the most staff that would end up founding Ghibli; including Miyazaki himself. Weirdly enough, I feel Moomin 69's biggest crowning legacy comes not from its own series, but from how its showrunners (Miyazaki and Osumi) would transfer elements from that show in a much better way to help define the Lupin the Third series.

    Me personally I rather have 90s version little My, since her being bratty is like her whole character and I adore her for it, and not mention that she is still a child and there are episodes showing she truly cares for her friends in the 90s version. I just don't like how they made little My less of a brat and more of a grown women who is a little feisty.

    I’m so glad somebody else dislikes 2019 Thingumy and Bob... they were done so horribly in that show, and I’m also so mad they had the Ruby shatter. I’ve heard the Ruby was meant to be a metaphor for the love between two women (the Groke wanting it was a metaphor for society trying to take it away, so homophobia) so them having it shatter was really upsetting.

    I was introduced to Moomins via Moominvalley and I do lean more towards liking the 2019 version better, (possibly because as an adult I value character progression more), but it's incredibly close. I greatly value art style and love the art and nostalgic feel of the 90's version. I also usually hate how the direction of animation has gone towards CGI, but I think they did well enough with the art style to make it a bit more distinctive so it doesn't bother me as much as it usually would. Music is also important to me though and the Moominvalley OST is to this day regularly on my playlist, esp. Back to the Cave and Free Spirit.

    I didn't know that the English voice for Moomin had passed away, I watched the Finnish dub of the 1990's cartoon before English as my maternial grandparents are Finnish so I loved the books. My personal favourite book was Moominpapa's memoirs as a kid and working on a sequel series as Tove Jansson inspired me to write.

    I discovered the 90s series a few months before the 2019 version, and I can say for sure that each series has pros and cons. I love how calm and laid back the 90s series is and it is my go-to comfort show. The 2019 series is very good at developing characters and I absolutely love Snork in the new series! Snufkin is my favorite character in both shows and I enjoy that they are so different since it kind of takes the Snufkin from the book series and splits him into two people.
    Personally, I like the 90s series better since it's more chill, but I definitely still love the 2019 version.

    I think I can add some more neutralish view into the 90 vs 19 Moomins discussion because while I did grow up with the Moomins, but it was mostly the Polish version, yeah, I watched the anime too, but before I found the fandom in 2020 I almost completely forgot that adaptation (to the point were I remembered some characters as strictly the fuzzy felt versions, like earning Snorkmaiden and Snufkin playing flute instead of harmonica)
    So, one thing I noticed is that when people say what they don't like about Moominvalley when comparing it to the anime they mention the same things that made me like '90 version less than '77; it's so innocently cute and sanitized of the dark and creepy vibe that made me fall in love with the original. In both cases, the "downside" of the newer version is that it looks much friendlier and no longer creeps out the kids, it's a very nostalgia-driven criticism that boils down to "times changed and I hate it". The thing is that even with nostalgia I can't be mad at a new reboot like it often happens; when my younger brother said he didn't like the anime but enjoyed CGI my only reaction was "yeah, that's fair" instead of a bitter feeling of disappointment. Of course, he likes it better, the visuals are cute, the music is charming and these peaceful moments are broken with scenes of terror. And I can agree that it may be better than the anime (I love LOVE the soundtrack and some character interpretations are better than previous versions).
    (Fuzzy Felt is still the best to me, not only because of nostalgia, but because it always seemed to fill that niche of scarish children's media, that I loved so much. All adaptations of The Little Mermaid changed her ending to a "happier one", and "The Little Match Girl" was often avoided in fairy tale books as "too dark". The Moomins were one of the few things to have that "death vibe" I wanted to see more of)

    i like both shows a lot and i dont mind how the characters changed since the 90s but i do think something's missing in the 2019 one. the 90s series had some incredibly eerie moments and i think thats what the new show is lacking. im not sure the reason for that, maybe its the 3d artstyle or the writing being more comedic but neither the groke nor the hattifatteners arent nearly as unsettling as they were in the 90s series, at least for me.
    all that said i still do enjoy moominvalley a lot! it's a very fun show with lovable characters and it definitely made more people aware of moomins' existance for which im honestly thankful. i just liked the vibe of 90s moomins a bit more thats all :D

    I agree with how you can't really compare the two series as equals when they were created at completely different times by different teams from countries thousands of miles away! Both have their strenghts and flaws and imo you can like either best and it's still ok.
    I personally like to watch the 90s anime when I just need something simple to calm me down, and the 2019 one when I want food a laugh, for thought or idea for a fanfic. I don't think I have a favourite myself??? I just really enjoy both :")
    EDIT: Oh yeah I was about to say that if you ever get the chance, you should watch the 90s anime in the original Japanese dub because not only are the vooces great imo, the opening is such a beautiful tune that always lifts my spirits

    I didn't grow up with the 90's version (mostly because I wasn't born until the late 90's) and have only recently started watching both shows now and in my opinion, the 90's show is better. I feel like all the characters in the 2019 version are all a little more selfish (especially Moominpappa - in the 90's show he was like "Let's have an adventure together, Moominmamma!" but in the 2019 show, he's like "I'm going on an adventure and dragging my wife with me without considering how she feels about it"). Yes, I appreciate Little My's chaos in the 2019 version but she's a lot more malicious while in the 90's version, she was more mischievous. And Sniff is just annoying in the 2019 one, at least the 90's Sniff still cared about his friends despite his cowardice and DIDN'T NEED THE HOBGOBLIN TO "CURSE" HIM WITH EMPATHY!!! I just feel like the 90's version has a positive message to deliver while the 2019 version just... doesn't.

    I know I have a huge biase for the 90's series because I grew up with it and it as a kid was my favorite show (probably still is since i just watch nothing) and I am very used to how the character sound and act and how the show saunds and how the stories are told on each episode. At first I hated the 2019 adaptation but I didn't know why, I believe it was because it was so different, I wasn't used to it and the animation seemed kinda strange. Also since I watched it in Finnish it at times felt a bit off when an English song started playing. I have started to like it more when the time has passed since I have gotten more used to it. I like how each series has it's pros and cons and I'm exited to see what more the 2019 adaptations has to offer.

    Interesting comparison! I'm biased toward the 90s version because I didn't grow up with CGI animation, so I wasn't very open to exploring Moominvalley. The biggest reason I was reluctant to watch Moominvalley was because of the depiction of Snufkin. I didn't like how Moominvalley Snufkin seemed very nervous, unlike the laidback 90s version, which spoils his character for me. I loved how 90s Snufkin had equal parts caring and indifference and had a kind of carefree, rural wisdom that made me wonder if I should move away from the city. However, after listening to you, I'm curious to check out Moominvalley because it sounds like it has more character development than I was giving it credit for. It would also be interesting to see a version of Little My that wasn't so grating. I agree with you on 90s Snorkmaiden voice, too. Your impression was very funny.

    I only saw a little bit of 90's show, cursed duckin one (which I didn't even know is Moomins) and 2019 version
    I personally likes 2019 a lot more
    Character focused shows is my type and i just couldn't start 90's because it's too boring for me (maybe I could like it if i watched it then i was a child, but i didn't), but understand why people like it more
    2019's show actually opened my eyes on some problems i had and still have but now i can understand the reason. This adaptation shows small adventures of moomin family but also problems like then you really like your friend, but sometimes they really annoying, fear of being forgotten and replaced, when your friend being liked more then you even if you tried more, wish of being heard and understood and a lot others
    90's series is probably fit more in book's atmosphere, but 2019's focused more characters development and plot, so every person will likes one of them more then another (even if it's a duckin one)

    Also, no hate to 2019 Snufkin, but he seriously doesn't feel like Snufkin to me. He's moreso a young teenager who was inspired by the character, rather than actually *being* the character.

    I prefer the 2019 in the fact that they are aged up. Likely because closer in age and even as an adult at 21, the teenage angst does not go away so easily.
    Hell, our bodies and minds don't fully reach maturity till around 25-30. Also, feeling like you're 14 still cus yer brain is a tad bit wacky (TM) personally makes it easier to relate to the 2019 adaptation imo.
    Neither is bad. I love both but I feel more invested while watching Moominvalley compared to the 90's Moomins.
    I personally wish more Sapphic relationships would be verbalized and shown (specifically Thingumy & Bob; CURSE WHOEVER TRANSLATED THEIR NAMES) as Tove Jannson was in a relationship with other women for majority of her adult life.
    BUT, as a masc presenting person who's also attracted to other masc people, Snufkin and Moomins relationship in the 2019 having more spotlight makes me so damn happy.
    We don't get many mlm (men loving men, masc loving masc) in cartoons unless they're like dads, which is just frustrating at this point. So having our MC, Moomintroll, express what looks to be an attraction to not just women is very nice to see.
    I want more romantic stuff shown because oh boy has it been teetering that way.
    I hold Snufkin dear from any and all series and books, my absolute favourite. So seeing him appear to be an socially awkward queer, makes my socially awkward queer self, very happy.
    This was a long way to say Snufkin, Snufmin and mlm rights but shhhhhh

    i grew up on the 90s moomin series. Even though i know nostalgia might be the reason why im so defensive of 90s moomins, i honestly just dont like the new character designs/models. Yea they do look mostly the same. You can tell who they are, i just dont feel like these are the characters i grew up with and loved as a kid. I dont like that moomin acts like a teenager and when i saw what mymble(snufkin's mum) looked like, i was just torn. I dont like how she looks and i feel like the models are the reason im so harsh to the 2019 show. Although i know i shouldnt judge it yet, as i literally havent seen it yet and have just been shown things and scenes from it. But im already put off by it and just dont have a want to watch it. I will, but i think ill need to become more openminded to the show before i do so. I am having a hard time seeing some of these as the same characters anymore, but maybe thats the point of it all. I didn’t really get into the series until like a month or so ago, so I don’t don’t have much nostalgic attachment to the 90’s version. The only nostalgia I feel towards it is the animation. It reminds me of shows I watched as a kid and kinda feels like a Ghibli production.
    Haven’t really seen much of the 2019 version. From what I have seen, the voices feel annoying to me. After being exposed to the laid back vibes of 90’s version, the 2019 voices sound like loud Monty Python characters or something

    • @sahana.speaks

      there’s nothing inherently sexual about a relationship between moomin and snufkin. by that logic, does the original sexualize moomin and snorkmaiden?

    • @pr1me840
      @pr1me840 Год назад

      There wasn’t anything in the 90s show that made me think ow they “love” each other in that way. Maybe Snorkmaiden and Moomin troll but that was also more innocent. I understand the writer could have some different connotations for each character and that’s all fine. But from our two-dimensional perspective, there really isn’t anything that could suggest that. I don’t know if you met kids, but kids can do weird things without being sexual. I remember I howled at the moon like a wolf a couple of days after each other in yearning for a “friend”. And we were not even that close. Children do weird things for little to no reason sometimes. And even if I had a strong desire for someone to be with me at that specific time it did not mean it was sexual.

    • @sahana.speaks
      @sahana.speaks  Год назад +3

      again, a relationship between moomin and snufkin is no less “innocent” than a relationship between moomin and snorkmaiden. a relationship between two young boys can be romantic but not sexual, the same as boys and girls

      @pr1me840 Год назад

      @@sahana.speaks I guess that people in America today will sexualize everything. The same applies to the color of people’s skin, such a hot topic. But I do think these notions, or lenses are rejected in most of Africa and the East. When I looked at Moomins 90s I only saw the family, the valley, and the adventures they had. I didn’t add in extra ideas of romance or relationships. That wasn’t part of our worldview. It is the same idea as watching an older movie and seeing two “hot “ people, we all know even before it starts that these two will get together at some point. We are conditioned to think in that way. With your comment about “innocence” or “romance,” I do not have any context for that. I do not know what you mean actually. There are other ways to use the word romance, but when it comes to human nature it is usually not disconnected from sexuality. Concepts like these are usually very abstract and arbitrary.
