  • How do you explain Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to tourists? It’s complicated…
    Vancouver's DTES became a poor neighbourhood although relatively stable. The area rapidly decline due to several factors, including an influx of hard drugs, policies that pushed sex work and drug-related activity out of nearby areas, and the cessation of federal funding for social housing. The drug overdoses in the DTES led to the declaration of a public health emergency and critical issues include opioid overdoses, especially those involving the drug fentanyl; decrepit and squalid housing; a shortage of low-cost rental housing; and mental illness, which often co-occurs with addiction.

When you go to African Road, every car you see is paid of cash, not through credit. Every car you see on the western road is financed by the bank, including houses. You actually own nothing in the west. That is why it's easy to lose your house. If you can afford to pay the monthly mortgage.

    Sad reality of old age poverty..All I can see is the seniors trying to make a living by hawking their wares in the streets whereas they should be at home being taken care of by their children and grandchildren like we do it in Africa. In Africa yes we are poor but we do take care of our elderly parents despite the limited resources. We keep them in warm dwellings whether huts or otherwise and provide them with food.

    My wife and I were there last month, and our Uber driver took us right down this street to get to the hotel. We were horrified. But over the course of our stay, it became part of our Vancouver experience. A government official who happened to be sitting next to us at the Rolling Stones show told us there are several factors leading to how East Hasting came to be like this. One was the closure of a mental facility where so many of these people belong. Another is the moderate climate. We found that these people are not dangerous and just keep to themselves. They don't ask passersby for money. Fentanyl mixed with horse tranquilizer is their high of choice. It's a sad situation with no solutions. Most of these people are not homeless. They have places to stay. Some make a little money off things they steal/find and then sell on the street. The street looks normal early in the morning, with all the trash picked up and before those people populate the sidewalk.

    I’m tired of people calling this homelessness. This is a drug problem. A completely different issue than homelessness. I’m not saying that homeless people are not living on the streets, but the drug problem far exceeds that in these areas.
    People on the street with drug problems have completely lost their own self respect and the respect of people and community. Yes they have a problem that they cannot fix alone, but they also have adopted a form of entitlement due the relaxed laws and relief of responsibility leading to their own conclusion of why bother to cleanup? Literally.
    They can’t be housed because they are reckless, will not respect the environment given to them and won’t accept treatment.
    Discipline needs to be structured into an enforced secure housing system with treatment and then graduating to lessons on life skills, or stay locked up in a centre if they don’t want those opportunities.
    They’ll be healthier and safer in a ward than where they are now.

    We see the same social conditions across Canada on a smaller scale with just as outrageous results.
    What happens in Vancouver eventually makes its way across Canada. Many of the government's crazy, harmful and senseless social experiments are first tried out there. Then the Good For You Spin Doctors declare it a success, even though the reality shows otherwise, and we deal with this insanity in our towns and cities across Canada. With this creeping permissive socialism being forced down our throats, our living standards and quality of life is rapidly deteriorating.

      @@1is7ener65 Paying people money and enabling them to be idle, giving them free drugs with lax criminal penalties and laws is not capitalism. Neither is making the commercial environment hostile with high taxes, excessive government interference and decriminalizing thievery. Socialism makes businesses shut down and leave, just as you see on these Walking Tour videos.
      Check out the government policies and living conditions in Cuba, which our country is coming to resemble.

      @1is7ener65 4 месяца назад

      @@Curlyblonde Welfare in this country is $600 a month for an adult. Hardly enough for people to decide to get lazy and live the good life on the streets. Where is the real money in this country going?! Not to the people or small businesses! It’s going to the government elite. Lax drug laws is not for the users or the dealers. it’s so the cities can hire less police forces and quit tying up the courts so less civil servant jobs are needed. The government is saving money by allowing legal drugs and firing government workers. Capitalism is about the money and not the people.
