Don't underestimate the amount of dV your monoprop can get you in an emergency situation. I've saved multiple missions that I ran a bit too tight on my dV budget where I ran out of fuel, but could get back to Kerbin simply by pushing the last bit of monoprop to get to a good descent level. Yeah a bit sweaty, but, that's the Kerbal way!

Nor the EVA fuel! I spent most of my liquid fuel on a chaotic mun descent, so I launched back, spent all my fuel to get the apoapex I needed, went EVA, collected all the science I had on the lander, and entered orbit using the eva. Now my plan is to actually get all the way back to the main rocket only using EVA and a bit of RCS, so I still have EVA fuel to actually get on the vessel.

For this contract I build a small ship that can finish ascent and return to Kerbin. I ditch the lander section on ascent. Of course, I have a Munar insertion stage that I crash into the moon. After the seismic sensor, it's extra science with each mission.

That's very much like what the next video is going to be like, accept I'm using the science from this mission to unlock the Mk1-3 command pod and other 2.5m parts.
If it wasn't for the rendezvous about The Mun contract two eps ago, I would have done it that way from the get go.

Getting back to Kerbin's orbit is easy. Just keep pointing straight up. No need to waste fuel on getting an orbit of the mun first.

This is doable, but it is more efficient to go east as quickly as possible rather than to go up. You also need to time it right. It certainly isn't easier.

I was wondering if you could cover an issue (perhaps in a later video) that comes up sometimes when coming back to Kerbin from far away: landing in a dangerous place, like the mountains. Is there any way to get a ball park idea of where on the surface of Kerbin you'll be landing, so that you can plan for it to occur in the middle of a large body of water? It's pretty easy to do when you're in low Kerbin orbit, but it seems (at least to me) to be basically a crap shoot where you land when coming in from the Mun or farther. It doesn't need to be particularly precise, just a round idea so you can stand a good chance of a water landing.

Apollo and Artemis worked it out, so I'm sure there is, but I'm not aware of how to do it in game. My only advice would be to quicksave before. If things go bad, you can revert and adjust your periapsis so you will land somewhere else.
