I completely agree that hinges, joints, and nets are super useful for angles, I personally have been using them a ton recently and my builds have improved so much because of it all. Very well made video Jack!
It’s just people learning from one another. I’ve only seen 2 people mention it. He’s used it in a MOC before, so it’s not like he’s just copying the words of another person. He put effort into it at least
Lego is actually missing one super important piece for MOC-builders. A "BRU"-brick. BRU is short for Baurichtungsumkehr, meaning "Reversed building direction". What is actually meant is a brick that reverses the direction in which you can build by 180° ; imagine for example a 1x2 plate that hasn't a male and a female side but two male sides. Brick companies, about 4 at my count, such as Cobi and Mega Construx developed this kind of brick to make the impossible possible. From the quality of bricks, especially mentioned companies had a steap leaning curve in the last 2 or 3 years and their products are now on the same quality level as Lego, in terms of clamping force of the bricks even above - which is needed for example for Cobi sets as they are into brick-model-building such as historical planes and warships (the good part is that you don't need glue, paint and it's less stressful 😉). Sadly, Lego is to stubborn to adopt the idea of bricks like that and these are free to recreate and not bound to a patent it seems.
Those pieces were around back in 1993. I only ever had real lego so I don't know where I got them but everytime I bring up that piece, people look at me like I'm stupid. I remember having them in grey and blue. They were 2x2 and thin like a baseplate had studs on both sides and on the edges inbetween the studs there were half circle cut outs
@@hoarder66 That's pretty much what they look now - at least the "male" ones (male = studs ; female =deepening) . There are some "female" ones as well but I think only Cobi has those. It allows to make some awesome build, like having slopes in different colors coming from below and above to create the effect of painting diagonally. cobitoys.de/gfx/cobi2/_thumbs/de/sklep_oferta/11975/rommels-mammoth,2525-scene-back,k3djZatnlKiRlOvRlmRk-.jpg The model itself isn't my cup of tea but the stripes on the side of that vehicle are done by using said "BRU"-bricks, no stickers, no decal, paint, printing whatsoever... Just bricks. In my opinion, Lego isn't the only company creating great models. I have airplanes (a P51 and a Fokker by Cobi) and three sets from Mega Construx' Game of Thrones series - the Dragon is marvelous. But even if you get bricks like said "BRU"-bricks (they intend to build up an online database and buying option like Bricklink) not everyone would use them because it doesn't say "Lego" even though the quality is actually the same, if not partly better (in terms of clamping force of the bricks which sometimes is necessary)
@@RobertVlcek as far as that linked pic goes, I dont think it suits what ur saying. If u look at the top of the back door it looks like a sticker and as far as the sides go, i can get that to work with just lego. However, lego definitely needs to up their game a lil bit. I bought a call of duty mega constructs set 2 days ago on clearance at a k-mart that is closing down. I saw quite a few pieces that would be nice to have. 1x1 modified plate with clips on both sides, cheese wedge with a stud on the angled part,1x5 plates, and honestly too many to keep typing. And they do hold good. The figs fall apart tho.
@@hoarder66 Nope, it's pad printed - they aren't doing stickers anymore and yes, the back is not build the way I said, however the sides are and it has an interior ; I watched different building videos and the techniques cannot be achieved with normal Lego bricks, at least not if you want to have both sides, exterior and interior looking smoothly. You could achieve something similar but would need more bricks/complicated techniques plus interiors tend to look not that great if you try do exactly that with Legos. - The planes and battleships by Cobi are built with similar techniques - and you could easily use the latter as a baseball bat. 😁 I actually like the Mega Construx minifigures.

I always want to mash another plate up against it so its studs on both sides.

I’m so happy that the name “mixel” has stuck around, I truly loved that Lego series I wish I kept mines is together instead of breaking them them up for the ball joints.
The brilliant thing about your tire treads technique is that it's like you've cracked some sort of code that LEGO had buried in their pieces. Could you imagine being a piece designer and figuring out hidden ways to make your piece be able to connect to other not-so-obvious pieces?
The limitation on the Mixels joints is that the span after the joint is a fixed stud length, making it hard to connect back to other studs after the joint. Often, my best solution is to design a section of your build to lay atop another section and overhang to look like it's connected, letting gravity do that job.
I did look at the vine looking thing and thought, did he put a tube through those plant bricks? And I did not know you could use the tank tracks like that, wish I know where mine are
If you don't have access to a LEGO store's Pick-a-Brick wall or LEGO Shop@Home, my best advice is to find a small Creator set you like, and buy mulitples of it. Creator revolves around the core five colors (red, white and blue, black and yellow), and buying multiples gives your builds repetition and theme. It cuts down on the Rainbow Warrior effect when your collection and money spent is small.

Place a lego hand in the back of a snot brick to create an on/off switch. Or a lego man clinging to an indent in a rock.
The small lego axels will fit a minifigures hand, or in a snot block. Vice versa, the matching lego wheels will fit on any of the lego "rods", the rims that have a hole all the way through are useful here.
Extend rod pieces with lego technic "+ axle" connectors. Or better, connect the "plain T shaped" rods.
Favourite piece, probably the flat 5x2 big piece with 2x2 studs in the middle and the 2 small axles sticking out on each side. Has a 1 stud hole in the middle.
When you open your mind and see this piece as more than a part of the chassi of a car, the possibilities are endless
All of these technique's just make your moc's look super fragile, like you barely but it together, Like the only thing holding it together is gravity
