Agreed upon this! I worked at a Blockbuster video in the very early 2000's and more than once I had parents asking me why the Jumanji movie was put in the Children's section or parents asking me if it was okay for their children to watch. I can understand worrying about a toddler getting frightened during some scenes, but did these people completely forget about the horror of children's movies from the 1980's?
Lol nj I use to be the kid that the blinking dash dash colon double dash on the vcr would (because it looking back a nice one or ones before they become resusitated for their 06 to 2016 or 16 year production albeit even if zi didnt use any never than orvhaver even once used exceptvat a grandparents house once... a post 2013... dampng man that sounds idk differebt now because never noticed that 5:54... but ueah in the dark the glowing blink of the slits looked imho ig must have been looking ig menacing for some reason when the power would go out or J had been frequently rearranging like legos meh bedroom tv vcr location etc and nkt done so within a 30 sec span or else just meant to but not doen it in time or fwiw failed to make sure before bedtime lol that I had set the time on it.... but yeah looking back I think having that sounds kimd of nice to have a electronics with like a screen on fhe front for time etd that noice kewl mint soft glow like a pretty color of night light etc fwiw idk maybe just meh nostalgia fwiw for mere details I remember about growing up at various points as a kid. Luckily fwiw it was under the bed so if I did not get out of my bed and stand low if I was tall then at the time enough to not see the under the bed space where the tv and vcr etc was fwiw because I had on and on over the years for a majority of the barely turned six years old onwars most of the time for meh bed was a well still is minjs the same height of a partial/low loft bed but hehe man it used to have a clip on slide so kewl... man fwiw thats still a neat design imho fwiw but yeah... maybe if I just turned around the vcr or unpligged it of course then I would have needed across the room a nightlight but pfft meh that was for other kids but not meh fwiwvmore because it would be to bright an I liked the dark to an extent better fwiw to sleep... vs being facong directly at angle with eyes able to fr see directly across the room lol fwiw.. but man idk maybe I was just snesitvie and like a princess and the pea sort of like lmfao I jjst needed to suck it up an lay until I could not stay awake any longer for however many hours but ueah back when I was a kid staying up would make my calves hurt or feel sore after the first day for some reason and idk why fwiw but staying up all night did that iirc by the fact that I managed to do so at least 2 or 3 times on different points of time pr occasions growing up lol.. but yeah it was weird how itd make meh muscles feel sore etc
But also itd make me not think about stuff before I would do it or whatever it was... and even then that was well.. more than usual is what I mean. An I would be basically like if I would even remember to take meh meds to not get all hyper active and crazy so to speak... itd be almost impossible to stop and think on one thing fwiw.
When Robin Williams Character screams "WHAT YEAR IS IT!?" That's how I feel for my after work naps 😂

Sounds like me after some nights drinking when I was in college.
The worst is when you wake up on a sofa, the clock says it's 6, and you can't tell whether it's sunrise or sunset. That mini heart attack when you think you're late for work, but you're actually early for dinner.

I love that they made his nemesis ( the hunter he feared) the same actor as his father, great psychological undertones!
I many versions of Peter Pan, Hook is played by the same actor who protrays Wendy's father.
It was right there in the game's clue that the hunter would be his father.

I saw this movie 4 or 5 times before I noticed that. Great switcheroo.
A lot of what the game was trying to teach Alan revolved around his relationship with his father.
I want to write about Robin Williams german voice actor: here in Germany really everything get dubbed. And that is done very professionally and very well! You can imagine that in the case of Robin Williams that can be very difficult! His german voice actor was Peer Augustinski and he really did a wonderful job on every film! When Robin Williams won the Oscar for "Good Will Hunting" he even sent Mr. Augustinski a replica of the Oscar with the words "Thank you for making me famous in Germany"! Unfortunately Mr. Augustinski suffered a stroke in 2005 and was unable to continue his work as a voice actor. He died in 2014 at the age of 74. Just two months after Robin Williams death! May both rest in peace!

but i gotta point out that dubs have suffered A LOT in quality in the last 10 years or so, hence why i stopped watching dubs. luckily my favorite cinema has all movies both dubbed and original Language screenings
@@IH8YH This is also due to all the streaming services. In the past, it sometimes took months for a film from the USA to be shown in German cinemas. There was still plenty of time to dub the films. These days, series and films are released almost simultaneously all over the world, so dubbing has to be faster and faster, and then of course the quality suffers.
Peer was amazing in its own right. Williams never felt the same again after he stopped dubbing him.

@@martinbraun1211 A.I. is almost to the point where it can be trained on the voice of a person and you can have them say whatever you want. I imagine that dubbing will be done this way in the very near future with essentially perfect results (it is already VERY good at this).
The father son reunion scene at the end always makes me cry. Didn't used to when I watched this at 5-years-old and for years to come, but boy it hits harder with age.
100%!!!. All the way through into my 30's I wouldn't bat an eyelid at the most horrendous things. Now I can tear up watching cat videos. It's like my brain and body don't align any more.
Even as a kid it made me really emotional
One of the central themes of this story is about finding the courage to face your fears, so brava on overcoming your own childhood phobia and finally watching this! 👏🏻😁
Zathura is a spiritual sequel and arguably underrated.
You should see the new Jumanji movies. They are surprisingly good and do not destroy, undo or overwrite what has happened in this movie.
Except for ignoring the ending.

This movie is such a lovely memory of my childhood, like Hook and Mrs. Doubtfire, where Robin Williams just makes us happy with his magical presence. RiP 🥺

There's a reason the hunter and Alans father were played by the same actor. The hunter is the physical representation of a man, and because Alan was told that he needed to be a man, he always fled from the hunter. So when he finally stood up to him, he became a man, since his father said that he needed to stand up for himself
This is a childhood gem, loved this movie as a kid.
I love when the kids say "Dont worry its just a pack of wolves" Whatever they experienced with the game made those kids in 1869 unafraid of packs of wolves.
The actor of Peter played Nemo in the classic Pixar film and the actress of Judy played MJ in the original Spider-Man movies. Just some useless trivia lol
The two recent Jumanji movies aren't remakes but a continuation in the story. I do hope you get to watch them in the future as they're really good fun. As always, you've delivered an outstanding reaction video, keep enjoying what you watch and I look forward to your next video 👏🍻👍.
The book is great and has some amazing art work. Also there's a spiritual sequel film called "Zathura" it's crazy underrated.
What's really amazing is it has 0% CGI. All practical effects.
@@cyberleadr It does have some sick practical effects. The space scenes are cgi but really well done. Also the rl board game is very accurate to the movie.
Actually Zathura was never a spiritual sequel. It was officially labeled as a spin-off as it supposed to take place in the same universe as Jumanji (and the books both movies were based off of do take place in the same universe).

This is one Robin Willaims' best movies, right up there with Mrs. Doubtfire(which you NEED to watch/react to if you haven't). Williams is a comedy icon, his improv and vocal skills made him unlike any other. Some of his best moments were just him doing what he did best, improvising and making stuff up on the fly. RIP Robin Williams, you left us way too soon and are so dearly missed. 😢❤

I haven't seen this since I was a kid! Just now realizing that Van Pelt, is actually his dad. Probably, a creature of Alans own imagination like his father hated him so. In reality, his father loved him though.

This is the perfect movie to watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Thanks, Addie. That was really fun. And yeah when I watched this as a kid, I think I was like 6 or 7 when this came out 🧐 and yeah as a kid there were DEFINITELY parts that scared me. The opening scene was scary talking mystical objects, wolves howling, the ominous warning of someone else digs it up etc. The giant mosquitos, the lion, and that carnivorous giant flower thing, and the spiders. Those were the scariest to me as a child, well maybe not scary, just anxious 😅
I hope you watch all 4 movies in this franchise. Zathura is an adaptation of the sequel to the original book, and at least one major cast member of the other Jumanji films wants you to know it's canon. And after Zathura you have Jumanji Welcome To The Jungle and Jumanji The Next Level. I think you'd enjoy all of them.
I think there's also a further sequel planned, and I'd like them to put some Zathura reference in there to connect them.
There might be more of these games around, and some internal lore to them that's hinted at in those movies.
20:02 If I remember correctly, Van Pelt is one of the other actors in the movie that they put in costume, of course. Also, his gun had a large pipe of sorts placed over it and no such caliber actually exists. They just wanted it to look ridiculous, of course.
No worries, Addie. I was hesitant to do WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE. It is a sequel and not a remake. I was pleasantly surprised. If you choose to watch, you'll see there is respect paid to this movie. I loved Robin, Bonnie, David, the kids, Bebe and Alan's dad/evil hunter dude. The music must be fine, but I couldn't pick it out of a lineup. We wanted a sequel and all we got was ZATHURA and it was like a decade later. Thank the stars we finally got something worthy.
I keep telling people, kid's movies from the 80's don't compare to the ones today. They got away with so much more back then.
If you want some other 80's kids movies, give
'The Goonies' (1985) or 'The Secret of NIMH' (1982) a try. Just remember, these are 80's kids movies, not current ones.
About who hears the drums. It's not just kids that can hear them and I only noticed it after watching the movie several times:
"Jumanji: a game for those who seek to find a way to leave their world behind."
That's what all the kids wanted for different reasons. Allen wanted to go away, Sarah wanted to be there for him, Judy and Peter because they lost their parents. They might not have realized it, but they wanted to leave their world behind. That's exactly what the game gave them and it also taught them that maybe their world isn't so bad.
RIP, Mr. Williams, Dr. Patch Adams, Genie, Mrs. Doubtfire, Alan Parish.
Robin Williams is in so many great movies and I highly recommend most. One of his best, in my opinion, is also quite under-rated. Bicentennial Man (1999) is a heartwarming family drama that takes on issues of A.I., sentience, and "human" rights. I won't say more because I don't want to spoil anything, but please consider adding it to your reaction list. Based upon your other reactions, I think you'd find it an endearing movie.
Bicentennial Man is really good, and criminally underrated! When it first came out, it kind of bombed, because a lot of people felt it was stupid, since something like that could NEVER happen, right?... Cut to a few years later, and Japan introduced the first "Living Doll" V.I. robot, and have upgraded them several times since, and now they are rudimentary A.I's...
Bicentennial Man doesn't seem so far-fetched anymore.....

When this came out, my brother and I had a News Paper Route. And the company had a raffle, this movie on VHS is what we won. And a pack of a new type of gum called Ice Breakers. That's how we watched it for the first time.
I was just thinking about this movie yesterday! I grew up watching it on VHS, played the board game (yes, they really did make a board game!) and have loved it all my life. But revisiting it as an adult after a few years of not watching it, I realized how many horror/thriller elements there are in it and I'm honestly surprised that I was never spooked by it as a kid, so I totally get why you were scared to watch it growing up. Glad you checked it out, it's such a gem. And a great performance by everyone in it, but have to give credit to Robin - it's not too much of a comedy, really, so his ability to channel a wide range of emotions that would be accessible to children watching it is no small feat, and you really get such depth from his character in his performance. He neither leans too far into drama nor does he talk down to the child viewer, it's a very authentic performance. You absolutely believe that he's been surviving in a jungle for 26 years, haunted by all he's seen and done to stay alive - and yet, he's still that little Alan Parrish at heart, never having grown up emotionally. That speech he gives about praying you won't be dessert (I think, at least just hoping you won't be eaten next) is so chilling, you can really see and hear everything he says. Amazing.
If you think Kirsten's young in this, maybe you haven't seen Interview With A Vampire? It's fantastic, very different from the current take on vampires, and she's scary good in it. Maybe add it to your October watchlist.

I love seeing my home state represented in film. I went to school in the town where this was filmed. The Parrish Shoes logo is still there on the side of one of the buildings to this day.
You should check out "Zathura: A Space Adventure" from 2005. It's a similar type of movie to Jumanji and just as fun and enjoyable!
Zathura is the "unofficial" sequel to Juanji.
Personally, I like "Zathura: A Space Adventure" a hair more than I even like "Jumanji."

Then yes; absolutely watch the newer ones! Such a good legacy sequel/reimagining that updates it for modern audiences :)

I don't believe it's connected to it, since it was based on a novel and this wasn't. But many refer to it as a space version of this movie.
Though not a directly tied in, Zathura is a sequel. My understanding is that in the books the Zathura board game was on the back of the Jumangi game.
Oh girl being afraid of Jumanji as a kid is VERY valid. It’s very much an intro into the horror genre for kids at least for some people.
I just love how the movie isn't a sequel and that it's unapologetically creepy at times without sanitizing itself.
I feel that today it would've had scenes full of camera shakes and would overall be over polished and color corrected. Just a hunch.
It's fair to say parts of this movie probably was scary for lots of kids. I really love Aunt Nora and Carl's scenes. The entire cast was really on point. Perfect casting. It also say something when Robin Williams (who shines in this, as he did in all his rolls) isn't the only funny character.
Before the Jumanji remake there was the the 2005 movie
Zathura: A Space Adventure
Which used the same overall concept as Jumanji, but in space.
Zathura is an adaptation of the 2002 children's book Zathura by author Chris Van Allsburg, who also wrote the 1981 children's book Jumanji.
Definitely do the new ones as well now that you've seen this one! WAYYY different, but very fun and enjoyable..i think you'll LOVE the performances haha

Bradley Pierce, who played Peter, is also the voice of Chip in Beauty and the Beast (1991). If you look up the film's director, Joe Johnston, then you'll know that he also did Jurassic Park III (2001) & Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). Speaking of him, I also suggest Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989), The Rocketeer (1991), October Sky (1999), Hidalgo (2004), The Wolfman (2010, UNRATED DIRECTOR'S CUT, for Halloween), and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018, he did the film's reshoots and oversaw the film's post-production, for Christmas). #MoreJoeJohnstonForAddieCounts BTW, Billy Jessup, who picked on Alan at the start, is a complete and total jerk.
Next stop, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) & Jumanji: The Next Level (2019). Speaking of snakes, there are two snake scenes in both movies. Please be brave, Addie. You go girl.

The Rocketeer is super good! And it has a very young Jennifer Connelly as the female lead!
I loved the subtle things they included, like the blue monkey and the asthmatic Rhino.
I love the 1st new Jumanji movie! I was really worried when it came out that it was trying to re-make the original, but it really is a sequel. It continues the story of the Jumanji board game being found on the beach and spins the game into a modern take on the game. It is very well done, and has an even more comedic adventure feel to it! Personally, the 2nd sequel wasn't quite as good, it feels like it treads the same ground for some of the movie. But it's still worth watching. ~Caroline

It scared me as a kid too, but for the reason that the things that happen to the kids in the film are scary!
If u watch pre Saving Private Ryan movies by Spielberg, u find that he always had a real hard mean male character. He did this subconsciously, because his dad was this way, and a ww2 vet. He had a hard time connecting with his dad. He said after he made this movie, he realized he gave his dad too much disrespect, because his dad was made hard from ww2, and they finally reconciled.
They actually used my school's parking lot for all their trailers when filming some of the movie. I actually got to watch them filming the Vine stealing the cop car scene at 25:48, which as a kid was cool to watch.
fun "fact": the two kids at the beginning of the movie who buried the game in the woods are the Parker Brothers. After playing Jumanji they immediately realized they could get rich selling board games that DON'T try to kill people.

I had nightmares about Van Pelt as a child, it's definitely a somewhat scary movie.
I live in NH where some of this was filmed. I think a lot of it is actually in Canada but there are a few shots in Keene NH. It was cool to drive through.

It took me a good 20 years to notice the father and hunter are played by the same actor. I'm sure the message in that is different roles of parental guidance.
I would definitely recommend the newer one from a few years ago- it’s a very different vibe but still a lot of fun, and honestly I’m glad they tried something new instead of rehashing what works about this one.
If you haven't seen it. there is another movie called Zathura which is from the same author and is very similar to this. Stars another famous Kristen incidentally.
Hi Addie, *Jumanji* is base on novel by *Chris Van Allsburg* (1981). Only several people known there is a movie like this: *Zathura - A Space Adventure* (2005) ofcourse from the same writer. Maybe sometime you will reaction for Zathura. I heard rumored that the next Jumanji movie is connected with Zathura
I love the 4th wall break when Peter is trying to get the ax out of the shed, but the shed is locked. He grabs the ax to break the lock then realizes he doesn't need to get into the shed, because the ax is already in his hands, then he just looks at the camera.
The little boy did make for a adorable Monkey-Boy. My heart melted when he was crying.
Most reactors only watch Jumanji, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and Jumanji: The Next Level, but there's another film in the series that everyone ignores: Zathura: A Space Adventure. OK, it's not technically a Jumanji sequel, but it was based on a work by the same author and follows the same format as this film. It's a fun movie, much like this one. You should include it in the Jumanji franchise.
Van Pelt scared me more than anything else in this movie. The moment he shows up with that weird suped-up-quasi-nitro-Winchester Model 1901-gun, I flipped out. It just made a real scary and satisfying blast. It's clearly a made-up and modified rifle though, because it sounds and looks like its designed for a larger caliber and seems almost like a rifle Hemmingway would use.
They modernized how the Jumanji game works for the newest movies and it works pretty well. The CGI for 1995 is surprisingly good except the weaker monkey effects....

I think Jumanji is quite scary for a kids a film! Me and my sister used to watch it on VHS when we were young and parts of it always scared us 😂

The follow ups with Dwayne Johnson are really fun too. Well worth watching.

Zathura is a more Sci-fi/space themed movie that is technically next in the series. It's somewhat underrated but a fine watch with some real heart, that I think you would really enjoy.
The very first time I watched this thought Robin Williams AKA Alan Parrish and Sarah Wittle were Judy and Peters Parents as well I honestly thought I was always the only one who thought that loll

Great movie, and the sequel with Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black is also excellent. There's another movie based on a book by the same author called "Zathura" that has a very similar story idea. I think you would like that one too.
A lot of people still miss the fact that Van Pelt is played by the father.

When I see the actor that is playing the Dad, I always remember about his character as the Butler Cadbury in Richie Rich. Anyway this movie is so sad.
I love when they meet the parents and they said they wanted to take a ski trip and they both yelled "NO!" because that was the trip they were killed on in the alternate timeline.
Please watch the rest of the trilogy. It's totally worth it. Also The Next Level has a end credit scene 👌.

Loved this movie since I saw it in theaters as a kid. The new ones are also a lot better than anybody expected and extremely fun. It's a reboot though rather than a remake. So although this stuff happened you don't have to see it to enjoy the new ones.

I suppose 'Welcome to the Jungle' and 'The Next Level' are not exactly sequels as they have different characters and the board game has become a computer game, It's not a re-make either as the plot is completely different. I've not seen 'The Next Level' but I enjoyed 'WttJ' even though it is a very different sort of movie.

Zathura comes next although most people forget it even exists. It takes place in the same universe (book-wise), but after putting "from the world of Jumanji" on the posters the producers did all they could to keep the stories separate. In the book the kids in Zathura are Alan Parish's neighbors and it's mentioned there are other board games as well. This particular game takes the players to a space adventure.
Then you got Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle followed by Jumanji: the Next Level and there is supposed to be another in the works.
The companion book was Zathura, which is also a 2005 movie starring Dax Shepard, Josh Hutcherson, and Kristen Stewart.
The *sequels* are great! They are sequels, not remakes or reboots, although they ignore the ending on the beach.
It was so nice of the game to transport the players back to the year that they first started playing... After it terrorized them!
Before checking out the recent sequels, you DEFINITELY need to watch the spin-off sequel that came before, Zathura: A Space Adventure. It's a shame that it doesn't get as much attraction as Jumanji does, either because it's not as well known as Jumanji and/or people consider it to be a quote on quote "rip off" even though it is technically a sequel AND is canon to the whole Jumanji franchise. So please do check out Zathura before watching Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. I think you would enjoy it as much as you enjoyed Jumanji. Very underrated.

Such a good kids film! I was a teen when it came out, loved it at the time. Am happy to say the 2017 sequel Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, is lots of fun, well worth checking out.
Love this movie, one of my favorites growing up. The director, Joe Johnston, was one of the first people hired at Industrial Light & Magic to make a little independent film called Star Wars in the mid 70s. Before Jumanji, he previously directed The Rocketeer and would go on to make Captain America: The First Avenger.
I’m not sure how many people know, but Jumanji actually based on a picture book. The format would be one page with a block of text about the current situation and a monochrome, but very realistic, picture on the opposite page. You can kind of see the format in the movie, after each roll, you’d see then next thing to come out of the game in the next drawing. The 26 year hop and the four players is an addition of the film, the book is just two kids playing the game together. As a kid, I couldn’t see how they could stretch that premise into a movie, but damn if they didn’t pull it off well.
