Is the M2 Mac Mini the best computer under $1000? Is it enough at only $599 with 8gb of ram or should you upgrade to 16gb or more?

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Have always heard apple was good for editing video/photos but always felt it was out of the price range for the performance I thought I needed. But your explanation helped so much
I have been bouncing around on what machine to get and just needed someone to tell me, for a starting photography business and a little light video work, this will work.... thanks for being that someone! Killer video.
Cheers!
Thank you, Patrick. Going from an Intel with 4 MB memory to M2 with 16MB memory. Basic Adobe design and illustration. Learning video and animation for simple posting projects.
Finally someone goes straight to the point and explains everything without the extra fluff. Keep it up!
The way you transitioned from your main camera to iPhone shots is simply amazing my friend!! Always a fantastic video as usual.
Perfectly said. Love this review
This is the video I'm looking for, thanks Patrick
Refreshing to have someone acknowledge the reality of just how expensive computers can be, and how even a base model is totally fine. PCs are flippin' expensive now, too. So these minis really are great
Love how straight forward this was. Thanks!
Loved the font you used for your supers!
First time I’ve watched a video by you sir. Honest and to the point, I like it. Thanks for the info.
Cheers!
The best and honesty comments! Thank you very much!🇧🇷
I appreciate the grounded approach in your videos. It’s so rare.
Love the authenticity dude. Thanks !
thank you for being direct and honest about this. 16GB RAM is a great idea. so many videos dance around the fact that 90% can get by with the $599 base model
if you can do it, go 16 for sure.
@@sloppysteaks i just ordered 16GB 256GB Varient, is this okay?🙂 App development and editing
@@TadkaGaming that’s what I’m going for. Editing 4K. I think that will be absolutely fine
@@jackgrindrodfilm yep, i also think so, it will be fine
@@sloppysteaks settled for 8/512GB due to my iPhone 13 Pro is 512GB. I never multitask so 8GB is just fine for me. Got it hooked up to my oled-tv which is great to showcase pictures/videos I’ve taken.
Got a gaming laptop with 12th gen i9 and RTX 3070Ti if I should need non Mac horsepower.
I’m on base model M1 MacBook Air and M1 Mac Mini. 4K RUclips channel. Gets the job done 🤘 Samsung T5 SSD to edit off of. Love how cheap and powerful we’re getting. Great video mayne
Thanks for the great video. It was levelheaded and I appreciate the honestly and common sense.
Great detail on ur explanations!
Nice breakdown man! I’m in a tough spot where I’m on a speced out 16in 2019 MBP but struggles so much to run the newer codecs. Almost thinking something like this with a few upgrades could be the move vs spending double on a new MBP.
A new MacBook Pro is gonna be more expensive. If you don't need a new laptop for portability then you'd probably be fine with a Mac mini sitting on your desk; you can use any of your existing monitor or an iPad too.
I'm excited (not because I plan on upgrading from the M1 Mac Mini) because it seems like there's a small shift in the tech world. So many cameras, phones, and computers that are amazing are getting more affordable and it means that we, as consumers, no longer have such a burden of being locked into bad systems + ecosystems.
Great review. I gonna buy the base mini m2 pro soon. It got all I need for a computer. I already owned a studio display which I love so much ❤
That was great, you've answered just about all my questions... From freezing & scarily foggy Ireland! ☘💪🏽👀👍🏽☘
Good vid! I was looking for reviews of the base model since I just want one for basic lifestyle things like spreadsheets and accounting for personal finances and sounds like it’ll work a dream for that. It’ll also be my first Mac so that’s exciting to see that side of computers!
you'll love it!
Brilliant presentation.
Bruh staying hydrated 🤌
Good review. I’m using the base model with an Samsung M7 43” 4k display! Absolutely smashing still works super fast for editing videos and normal tasks. All the hype about getting upgraded isn’t real! Unless you are doing like 4 layers of 4k video editing and most people aren’t!
Hi Moses. Are you using the default base model with 8GB Memory and 256GB SSD?
@@luisterrazas514 yes the base model. 16 mins rendering time on 4k video of 15 minutes. That’s ok by me. 😅
@@MosesJSaldanha sweet! I was stuck between upgrading memory but honestly I'm not one to need things to be super speedy. this gives me a good idea about the base model and will purchase it soon. thanks mate.
@@luisterrazas514 All other normal things work super smoothly. Only lagged when I was searching for 100gb of jpegs from the search. Otherwise it’s pretty good I use Photoshop and premiere pro together and works smoothly. Workflows have no lagging. I was so worried as I had bought mine already before checking any of the reviews. Turned out ok.
@@MosesJSaldanha just got mine today. amazing! cheers 🍻
Thank you for an honest review.
Good job, well said.
We need more people to review tech like you bro dope video 👏👏👏👏
You are right on point, even pro users (depends what one would define a pro) can easily do their work on these machines. I do simple graphic design in Affinity and have 20 tabs open in chrome at the same time for research purposes . Yes, I can easily get excited and spend $1300 or $2000 on a maxed out M2 or a M2 pro model but that defeats the purpose. I want a machine able to deal with the work load which is what 99% of what I do on a daily basis and I don't want to spend more than I need. I have a MaBook Pro M1 which can take the heavy load if needed so my choice is a bare 256gb M2 with 16gb of RAM. I have plenty of 1tb and 2tb ssd's available to store my stuff and work from and if I have to wait 3 seconds more for a 24mb file to finish so be it. Don't get caught in the "influencer use case" trap, just think about what you need it before you spend your hard earned cash.
I'm really considering it
still rocking the OG M1 with 16GB of ram and the thing still slaps. can't believe what i can make with it for a fraction of what my previous intel mac cost (and that thing couldn't keep up)
yeah really no reason to upgrade that machine yet. stellar.
Hell yea, something under a grand. I’m stoked! I trust you, Patrick. Thank you 😚
Great Review !
I've been building my own / using PC's since 1990 ish. Just got my first base M2 Mini. Love it. apart from the amazing speed for 8GB, it's just fun. I work as a CAD Engineer, but that's mainly on Windows. These are the best value home PC you can buy, period, no arguments. Coupled it with a 1TB quality SSD and it flies. 👌
Thanks Patrick! 😁👍
This was incredibly helpful, I wish more tech reviewers were honest and to the point without the flashy frills of their PowerPoint transitions and cookie cutter set-ups. You helped me make a decision
"Of course it can" Sometimes you just need someone to be real. This is exactly what i needed to hear, much appreciated!
I have an m2 machine! And i agree with everything you say! I really think u reviewing an m2 macbook air base model would make every other youtube review look silly! Love the conviction! Love the videos overall!
One of the most in-your-face realistic review/insights for "regular" folks wishing to purchase an Apple silicon device.
Glad you liked it!
Great video bro!! I had the M1 base model with 16gb like you did. I could throw FX3 120P AT IT ALL DAY.
NOW IN PREMIER PRO WITH 120P I WOULD HAVE TO MAKE PRORES POXYS. FOR THE 120P BUT HEY THAT LITTLE MACHINE WAS A BEAST
Nicely done.
Dude I’m seeing a lot of halation in your footage you using the cinebloom filter for this I love it
I’m not! Thanks for watching 🙏
Hey Patrick! Its pretty nice to see the M2 Mac Mini. It’s pretty amazing review for this. The way you show it, that’s very a nice Mac. I love the way they had is, the best quality ever! So how are you today?
stellar
Great video Patrick. Thanks for sharing. Probably going to go for a higher up Mac mini with the M2 pro max or whatever and 32gb or ram. 4tb SSD and I’ll be off to the races hopefully for another 5 years. My 2017 iMac is getting brutal.
excellent choice - buy once, set it and forget it. that's how i feel about my mac studio. and you'll be a chip ahead.
Surely you'd be better off with a mac studio at that price level?
I’m definitely getting the M2 Mac Mini, cause my 2015 iMac is struggling, I do have a M1 Air, but I prefer a larger screen
Bruh just plug your m1 air into an external monitor. Trynna save your finances, and maybe even your relationships, and maybe even your life.
I have two 2012 Mac Mini(s) that I upgraded with SSDs a few years back and they
both run beautifully. I call them my digital Volvos (owned a few and NEVER had
a problem) Anyways, I do think it is time to upgrade to an M1 just out of curiosity
relevant to the latest OS. I do appreciate your candor/frankness in explaining the
virtues of both the M1 & 2 pertaining to user needs. Again, much appreciated.
I also have tow 2012 minis, i5 and i7 with max memory and SSD's. Still running strong but these new M2's are enticing. I just don't know whether to stick with the base M2 w/16gb ram/512gb storage or jump to pro for the 4k HDMI 2.1 out. I connect these to LG oleds that are capable of 4K/120HZ. Apple has too many choices but these days you have to get the right configuration because it's impossible to upgrade later.
I also have a 2012 mini with upgraded ssd and ram. It’s been amazing for the 3 years I’ve owned it as a new youtuber producing simple to moderate editing, but I’m noticing that I’m starting to outgrow its capabilities with more advanced editing.
It’s time to upgrade to a M2 mini, but as many I’m stuck between choosing a base or a pro. I know either one will be better than my 2012 mini, however I want to make sure I don’t bottle neck again lol.
I just got the mac mini m2 and I traded my M1 mini...since I am a student I got the M2 Mini for $499. They gave me $270 for my M1 mac mini (base model) and free shipping. So I upraded for $229. I'm certainly happy with that. I'm sure it will be great for all of my needs. I bought the new one, not because I need it but I just like new shit...lol. Great video my friend. Keep up the good work. Stay safe.
excellent deal!
@@emp116 I have no problem doing that. Free shipping, instant savings, no advertising, no phone calls, no having to meet anyone. This is good for me. Thanks.
Really enjoyed that, all too many get carried away and focus on the big stuff. Sometimes you just want to know about the small everyday stuff.
Nice..... Thank you
I am using the M2 processor in my Mac Book Air and Mac Mini .......and its awesome.....great performance at half the power consumption and almost no heat ........
Great review. Simple. And effective. Like the Mac Mini M2.
Thanks for watching!
1:40 really love your point about the fact that most of the people who make these tech videos are the biggest power users
Thank you. Soooo many videos that say "if you edit video or photos, maybe think about upgrading", but not a lot saying what you've said. I'm a keen photographer and use a drone. But not professionally, and don't really want to spend $2k on a computer for my own messing around. At $600, I don't have to commit and be 100% sure, and if in a couple of years I do want to spend more, I can.
I went from my ‘17 i5 MBP base model to a base M2 Mac Mini for $320 (education discount plus trade-in value of my 2017 MBP). It was available to pick up same day since I wasn’t looking to buy 16GB of unified memory. I only surf the web, watch RUclips and scroll social media
I now know what to get for a desktop. I haven't had any desktop in so long since I got my laptop/s. I want a desktop but I don't wanna build one as I'm stressed with all the options and I'm not that techie. So I think the Mac mini is perfect for my needs and I don't have to pick pieces and build a pc. I like that it's also somewhat portable!
thank you for this video! i was confused bcs some other tech reviewers saying "if you're just gonna do regular browsing get M2 (the 599 one), but if you're into productive task then get M2pro" lol
I ordered mine the day they were announced and maxed out the ram. It’s sooooo fast!! It’s replacing my 27” 2016 intel quad core with maxed out ram. It’s a work computer. I run a lot of technology on it and lots of remote connections so the iMac was getting bottlenecked pretty hard. The M2 is more than up to the task. Did I mention it’s super fast? It’s so fast 😊
Congrats. I aspire to do the same and get 24gb ram. Crazy to think this chip will one day be in an iPad air.
I'm considering the same; my 2017 Intel iMac with 24gb memory has got too slow running Photoshop and astrophotography apps so was thinking of a 24gb memory Mini as a replacement.
Thanks for your take on the base m2 Mac mini I agree with you im only looking for a base model to watch RUclips surf the web emails etc I have a older 27" iMac connected to a tv as a bigger monitor thanks.
I just recommended this base model to my colleague photographer at a deal of $499, she owns one of those old relics windows pc with 4gb of ram (real 4gb of ram not the 8ram from m1-2 which are awesome 😂) and im just glad that her work flow is going to speed up like a 1000% faster. Life change for her work for sure.
I already own a mac mini m2 pro 1tbb and love having the extra ports and long durability (years) but also used to own an air m1 base model and can do all the work as well BUT the only downside was it gets a lot warm-hot with lightroom editing and exporting
Here this has now moved into a good price range in spite of the exchange rate. Mostly because of the performance to price, well worth it.
Finally a decent review! You rock dude ;)
🤘🤘
Yeah, I’m thinking of replacing my 2014 mini with 4gb with the base model with 8. I edit 36 megapixel RAW photos on the machine I’ve already got but if I have a couple of my gmail accounts open in safari it won’t be long before I’m playing with the beach ball. Still, I get the RAW editing work done but it might be time to move on.
Gotta say this has swayed me to get the base model as a work from home graphic design machine. I'll probably go for a 16gb ram, maybe 24 and 500gb ssd and work off external storage. Was thinking the pro/ biting the bullet and getting a studio. I can't build me a PC that good for 699.
Then it’s not the base lol
@@rthilson It's the base model in that its M2 not M2 pro ;) But yes, youre right
Great video! I'm about to buy a new computer - moving over from pc. My choice will probably be the Mac mini m2 base model with 16gb, and 512 ssd, doing office work, lots of docs and tabs open at the same time + zoom. A couple of questions:
1. Would you wait for the M3 Mac mini or go for M2?
2. Would you buy new computers every 3-5 years, or make upgrades to keep it longer, for example m2 pro?
Note, my job is paying.
Thank you!
Great vid. I have used my M1 Mac Mini for 2 years and it’s fantastic. My advice: if you can only afford the base model - get it! Even if you do video editing, photos, light music production, etc. However, I can’t do normal work things, life things, AND full music production or the video editing workflow I prefer because the storage and ram are just too small. So, M1/M2 are beasts, but you will regret the base model of you are like me and want a professional workflow. My next machine will be at least 16gb + 512gb minimum, base chip is ok if budget demands 👍
I should say: You will “be frustrated by the base model…” If it’s all you could spend. It’s not so much of regretting. More like, use this great but limited machine until you can afford more.
This is why I suggest people buy what they can afford and just return it if it doesn’t cut it. I do pro video/photo work for a living and I always buy base storage. I will not give money to apple for their insane markup on drives. I also don’t work off the internal drive. My work is too critical, so if the machine goes down I need my files to work off another machine. I use external drives for absolutely everything.
people are getting bored when things are easy to get. thats 1 thing. but for me even using a 2017 model i still appreciate it.
I do short film anywhere to 10 min to an hour long, I don't color grade much at all. I use canon cameras, 1080 and 4k, so I was wondering if it can handle that since I heard you say something about feature films or documentaries in which I do. I am totally new to Apple, so I'm wanting to make sure I'm buying the right component. Thank you.
This is great, thank you. I’m getting an M2 mini with 16 gigs and that’s that. If you or any of the other commenters have suggestions for a 27” monitor to go with it, I would appreciate it. I’ll be doing some photo editing and nonprofessional video editing and the usual word processing, etc. Since the Mac mini is so reasonably priced, I can afford to buy a nice monitor. I hold on to my equipment for a long time, so I’d like to invest in something I can use for many years. Thanks!
Hey, what monitor did you end up buying and how is it?
I agree.
finally. an honest review that cuts through useless benchmarks and wild what-if scenarios. thanks dude!
cheers!
Thanks. Great down to earth advice. Far too much bs on other channels.
yh for a student the base model is perfect for me, such a good price
You can actually edit 4k video, 10 bit 422, color graded, for real? I'm wanting to use Pro Res and Resolve doesn't really make that available in the PC version and so I'm about to get a Mac. I have a blown up PC, 32 gig RAM, high end graphics card, all a that. This can really match that? I'm amazed. Thanks for sharing. Glad I saw this.
I’m on the 2018 intel i5 Mac mini, if I went to the base m2 one would that really be a giant leap for me or a small one? I mainly use photoshop. Thanks and good video
So I am trying to get into video editing and deciding to buy the 16gb Mac mini m2 but should I get 256ssd and buy an external drive or just upgrade the ssd to 512gb?
Thank you, for a very good comment post about the new basic M2 "mac mini". If over the past year Apple, Inc, had created two versions of the "mac mini" (a base level M1 model and a Pro M1 model) they would already have my money. But, no what they gave us was the first M1 desktop and then nothing afterward. So, now it is too late for me. Because, last Spring after the introduction of the "Mac Studio", I stopped waiting and picked-up for 1,200, a used space gray "trash can" size Mac Pro 8-core/ D700/ 64GB/ 1 TB SSD and pared it with my already owned Apple 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display and everything is working great together (smile...smile).
that trash can mac is the only mac i ever hated. absolutely nothing but problems. hope you have better luck, there's no way i could use intel anymore.
I'm Def getting an 512gb 16gb option for 3d modeling and rendering as well as coding
I got a 2009 Mac Pro with a 3.33ghz Intel Xeon and 32gb ECC RAM and 8tb spread over 4 internal hard drives. Works great but is a power sucker. I use it to stream to RUclips, video vlogs, discord and using OBS and light video editing with Final Cut Pro X. Should I go with the 16gb and 512gb ssd. I will sharing files with my Mac Pro.
Thanks for the honest and great review man! I'm on a pretty tight budget right now and wanna buy my friend the mac mini m2 base model. She's a student and literally does light work only including web browsing, doing assigments with microsoft office applications, etc. Nothing more than that. I honestly think 8 GB are more than enough for her type of work but would you agree with my point considering the type of usage I just mentioned above? The only thing that scares me off a bit is the 8GB or ram on the base model.
Her kind of work is literally the bread and butter of the 8/256 Mini. For reference, I've just completed my postgraduate degree using nothing but my M1 Mini and Macbook air, both 8GB. They both speed along quite happily and never break a sweat at all. As a simple productivity machine, there is literally no equals in terms of usability, stability and reliability to the base Air/Mini.
@@sloeginandsleep1170 Thanks a lot!
I may get this Mac, but I always like all my files in one place, with me. I have a 1T SSD in my Macbook pro which is an i7 with 16gb RAM. I have it attached to a 34in LG ultrawide. I do use both screens.
i dont trust system drives. if something goes wrong you're toast. i work off external SSD's only.
@@sloppysteaks I did buy a 16T external. Non SSD drive last year, but to keep it connected via a dongle to the Macbook Pro does not always work out. When the Macbook sleeps, it does not wake properly upon the Macbook waking. Very annoying. So I thought about the M2 to have the drive constantly on.
@@suitcafe yeah you gotta go SSD
Having ordered one and a studio display. Can you recommend whether the extra IO on the display is good enough to use for external hard drives or would you plus hdd into the Mac mini directly? Great video.
The mini is only USB 4 so your externals will run a bit slower.
Will more RAM speed up video editing if I'm using external SSDs? will the SSD capabilities bottleneck the power of the computer to a point where more computer power won't be helpful?
Does that base model support 4K 144hz monitor (just one)?
Fantastic video. I love your honesty.
I love nespresso
@@sloppysteaks Me too!
professional 2d artist. rendering images in high pixel dimensions mostly. Wanted to go for the Mac Studio monster power house and max out the ram at first, since Photoshop just loves Ram. Thoughts?
buy what you can afford, test it, return if it doesnt cut. everyone has their own thing going on. try not to listen to people here.
Great realistic review. Would you still recommend the base model for a student about to enter/start studying Data Science? I heard someone comment that 8GB RAM on a Mac is the same as 16GB on Windows PC. Is that true? This would be my 1st Apple, I've only every used PC - currently using a 5 year old Asus laptop with 16GB RAM. Thanks, would appreciate any feedback or advice!
Should be fine!
Did anyone ever figure out or fix the Bluetooth interference issues? I wonder if these new models with Bluetooth 5.3 are any better in that regard?
even my mac studio has issues. i gave up on even trying.
I work full time as an editor. My current PC is intel i5 and is really slow. Going to get the m2 16gb 256 after watching this. Think that will be bang on
256Gb has a lot slower performance than 512Gb or bigger SSD. You definitely want 16Gb and 512Gb storage for the optimal performance.
@@Minsetti I will only be running my software from the SSD. All my stuff is in externals so that shouldn’t affect it should it? I’ve read that 256 is fine
@@jackgrindrodfilm software performance is going to be worse with that slower SSD. Even still 256GB is generally going to be quite restrictive with how quickly caches fill up. Definitely worth having at least 512GB on a modern machine.
nice watch collection

Im "hoping" to stick to a $700 budget for trying amy first mac. (Im a windows user.. So I'll probably stick with garageband for now to get my feet wet on mac).

I love people with strong opinions, I can't stand the Mac operating system but I do love the power of the M1 and M2. I own an M1 iPad and M1 Mac Air but almost always use Windows based laptops. The Mac Mini M2 with 16gb of ram does sound amazing but as you said trhe M1 versions are amazing too. Maybe I just need to invest even more time getting to grips with Mac OS.
It really is the superior OS. It’s so sexy cmon man show it some love. Xx
I am thinking of buying m2 Mac mini and not too familiar with the Mac’s. Just for everyday use plus some GoPro editing. I will probably get m2 with upgraded memory to 16gb. Excellent video sharing the truth. The M2 Mac Minis are really great.
should I get a mac mini with 24gb of RAM
Been trying to asking around on different videos about the mac mini, but do you the mac minis perform for live streaming? I wanna get into live streaming and would love to get something this compact, and it would be my first mac
You could live stream with any computer from the last 5 years. No sweat. It’s not a power intensive activity.
