George Lucas on the Meaning of "Star Wars" (Oct. 23, 2014) | Charlie Rose

- Filmmaker George Lucas talks to Charlie Rose about the mythology behind "Star Wars" and why he thinks the movie's message is so universal. "What makes a hero, what's friendship, what's the idea of sacrificing yourself for something larger... They're all really basic things. So you say, well, you don't have to make a movie about that, it's very obvious, but it's actually not." The interview was filmed live on stage at Chicago Ideas Week on Oct. 17, 2014.

My god, look at that hair. Scientists need to study his hair genes and cure balding once and for all
+leftyfourguns lol!.
It looks very lush ahahaha
Baldness is linked to high testosterone I think.
I would definitely miss my forehead though
Would you want that hair... if it came with that neck?
You should watch The Mythology of Star Wars with George Lucas and Bill Moyers - that's one of the best STAR WARS documentaries that goes to the heart of the saga ..... Myths are lost language of the soul - it evokes certain ideals within us that are deep embeded - ideals of love, courage, friendship, sacrifice. As one native saying says: "Tell me a fact and I'll learn. Tell me a truth and I'll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever." That's why STAR WARS is loved by so many people - it's a modern myth and we need these stories as a humanity.
damn that's deep
***** That's STAR WARS Legacy Revealed but The Mythology of Star Wars with George Lucas and Bill Moyers is uploaded on Vimeo.
Thanks! I'm really loving this documentary!
That's a wonderful saying
Believing in Star Wars or Islam? Mmmmm... I'll take Star Wars.
This is why George Lucas, and Star Wars, is genius. It’s deeply complex, yet still easy to understand. On the surface, it may have some pretty basic themes and ideas, but underneath, it’s interesting, deep, and intricate. But it’s not made in a way to be pretentious, because it appeals to most everyone and is set up in a way that it can be appreciated by everyone.
He is not genius!
He stole the ideas from the Biblical stories (which were real) and simply inverted them, like all good Satanists do. Good becomes evil, and evil becomes good. And he did a marvelous job bamboozling hundreds of millions of people. He tuned it with Eastern mysticism and New Age crap (absolutes are not true, and only the Sith use them).
The real 'star wars' was the expulsion of Satan and his rebel messengers by God, eons ago.
I find the statement Lucas makes about Star Wars being so popular because it respects certain universal truths quite intriguing.
Taoism in Star Wars is the same as 2600 years ago...and yes George Lucas is a genius for this
unfortunately it's something that nobody understands anymore
GL made my child hood. Screw the hatters. The man is a visionary.
Dash Attack “cough” special edition changes.
Lucas misunderstands Asian Philosophy, as it's about detachment from desires and not emotions.
A man may be a visionary but that doesn’t mean you should lose your own vision in the face of criticism.
Yeah screw those hatters, always making hats and going mad from chemical exposure!!
@@billtree52 you beat me by 10 hours to make this joke haha
And this is why, despite his faults, George Lucas is a great man.
theawesomedude657 Agreed.
George Lucas makes a surprisingly good case for filmmakers being our modern philosophers.
Yeah, some.
@@toad_of_the_sky agreed, some films are true art, some are hack propaganda
Nice point, thank you!
That's deep, true and inspirational. It's no wonder how George Lucas succeeded where many others failed. His vision came from above.
God gave it and I can see the world is trying to take it away, but I’m glad Dave and Jon are helping to preserve the greatness of Star Wars.
You might say it came from the high ground.
The sith are controlling this video, the audioforce is out of balance.
George Lucas's Star Wars makes you believe in something greater.
Disney's Star Wars can't make you believe in anything greater because it's so contradictory it can't even decide what it believes in.
George Lucas is basically God cause he created Jesus aka you.
@@bluepearl_22 lol George Lucas is in NO way god.

Happy Birthday to the creator of Star Wars George Lucas thank you George for star wars may the force be with you I absolutely love star wars
A true retelling of the stapled good vs evil. As a child I can recall seeing Empire, closed in a dark bathroom with a VHS so I wouldn't get distracted. As soon as I was finished, we drove to Abingdon (nearest Cinema) and saw Attack of the Clones. From such a young age I've been fascinated by this story and it's roots. I hope more than anything else that the stories shared in our time and times last live to teach our youth to preach it better to their children. Because frankly, we're doing a terrible job.
He stole the ideas from the Biblical stories (which were real) and simply inverted them, like all good Satanists do. Good becomes evil, and evil becomes good. And he did a marvelous job bamboozling hundreds of millions of people.
The real 'star wars' was the expulsion of Satan and his rebel messengers by God, eons ago.
Star Wars for me has always been about philosophy.
Really? Please enlighten the rest of us? What philosophical ideas are you referring to?
Nameless Paladin There are too many to list here. But if you seriously hadn't realized the philosophical implications of these films then you weren't watching them properly or thoroughly.
eternalnate Try
Nameless Paladin I don't have to try. There's determinism, stoicism, materialism, Taoism, Buddhism, dualism, environmentalism, etc. Like I said there is far too many to list here. If you've read philosophy and watched any or all of Star Wars, these and many other philosophies are readily apparent and quite obvious. Star Wars, and Godzilla, were why I started reading philosophy.

Star Wars was simplistic b/w morality for the masses. It wasn't until the prequels and Attack of the Clones, and Count Dooku, that Lucas started exploring the muddled grey area of social morality and politics.
So basically he wanted to see if what philosophers said long ago aged well in a then-modern medium at the time, and added those philosophies into Star Wars.
"Don't kill people and be compassionate and love people,
and basically, that's all Star Wars is".
Yeah, tell that to the people down in Alderaan!
lol and the tons of stormtroopers Luke murdered on the Death Star
Low Blow guys, low blow...
Yeah, tell that to the people down in Alderaan!
That is because he wanted to show that killing people (an entire planet) is a bad thing. Its all about moral. We want to love and respect, not to kill people. Truth is its all about good versus evil, or in other words, our perception of reality (which is different to everyone)
***** I think that's the good vs evil part. But I guess the blind don't see.
That's kind of the point. Lucas is saying the Sith are wrong for blowing up Alderann and killing innocent people. He point them out as the alternative to the Jedi who leave a good lifestyle of helping people.
Lucas is a genius!!! Greatest filmmaker ever!
Not really. I've seen far, far better naturally talented directors than Lucas, Spielberg being one of them. If anything, the actors all complained that they found it extremely difficult to get proper direction out of him on set.
@@white-dragon4424 There's a difference between director and a filmmaker. George's direction relied on the actor's interpretation and understanding of the material. It's a detriment in that it may lead to some awkwardness, but the strength in that style is that every line spoken by the actor is something they believe to be true and that makes it easier for the viewer to buy in to what's going on or what's being said. The awkwardness comes from the fact that the performance is personal and real, and real people are sometimes awkward. George isn't the best director or the best filmmaker. No one is, really. But it's hard to deny him as the purest, most popular auteur of our time.
It's funny because the man who's being very insightful and deep here also gave us the prequels and the special editions.
+ChrisIsONLINE I think he's a great story writer, just not that great when it comes down to the specifics, such as directing the scenes, the dialogue, et cetera. The story as a whole is great, the prequels just made many cringe with the scenes themselves, such as the romance between Anakin and Padme or Jar Jar as a character. So basically, great idea, not a great execution.
Yeah, I'll give that to him.
+tommytom Jar Jar Binks is the greatest character in the prequels. It is very nuanced, but if you pay attention you'll see he's only putting on an act. Manipulating the heroes. He's the only fleshed out character in episode 1. They killed a large part of his story because the negative fan reaction though ;( He will return as the new emperor in the Force Awakens. The recent leaks were confirmed and have been made official.
+ChrisIsONLINE Even though the prequels were not well written and the dialogues were quite bad, the story behind it was absolutely not devoid of depth, on the contrary.
The Prequels are deep tho.

What an amazing man George Lucas. surprisingly insightful.
that last part got me. Inspirational guy
I agree with george, on how he said, people say its obvious.
But in reality its not obvious to the majority, and thats why religions are so important.
I Love STAR WARS... it is the truth and the future of mankind
Lucas got lucky with his first three movies. He was working with people who had the guts to question him and help steer the movie into the right tracks. After that he fell into greed and all the passion of the originals was long gone. Also he no longer was working with the same people so he got no one to question him. That's why the prequels turned out to be so bad.
If George listened to everyone who told him "no" back then, there would be no Star Wars
leftyfourguns Have you seen Lucas' original script draft for Episode IV? It was terrible, and pretty much like the prequels. It was George's colleagues and co-workers who told him to change it to what it turned out to be.
Star Wars: so simple but just when it seems too simple, it hits you right in the heart with something dead serious, epic, and real.
The force is actually just taken from the life force in Hinduism/Buddhism. Everything your taught by the gods of hinduism you have to relearn alot of it sometimes.
I actually find Judaism the most similar to the Jedi...
In anciet hebrew Sithra Ahara means our other/darker side
The Jedi being executed, betrayed and killed because of some charismatic basterd ....
And there are so much more from some words used as name such as Yoda....
To the robes of the Jedi
To some culture sinilarties....
I think the force users are based on buddhaism and Judaism....
Actually, this is also a Biblical thing if you dig deep enough.
Love the way he put this.
every time you listen to george you realize why he is the only one that can actually pull it off.

It seems that the stereo sound encoding for the video was done improperly. If you are having trouble hearing it, it is because sound is only coming through the left channel. You may need to use headphones or temporarily adjust your computer's sound settings to output mono sound only or duplicate the left channel in both speakers/earbuds.
That's what the Force is then
Cool
I will say this: he has a wonderful head of hair. I imagine many of his peers would be rife with envy.
John Williams, Ralph McQuarrie and the people at ILM are the real reason Star Wars became a huge hit. Lucas's "story" wouldn't have meant anything with terrible music, costumes and bad special effects in 1977.
Liquidzer0 Exactly! People miss out on this fact. There were many collaborators whose contributions to this were as great if not greater than what Lucas did.
This is completely untrue. Watch any interview from Irvin Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan, and all the other people “who are the real creatives that made the quality of Star Wars” and they will tell you that George was so involved in every single step from concept design to set building to character Candace to consistent cinematography. And NO, he was not just super involved and these various people forced in all the good of Star Wars. Read the making of Star Wars books, and you will see how Marcia Lucas and the other editors dis not save the movie in the edit, quite far from it. She wanted to keep the schemes with Luke poking at the battle from bellow in, but LUCAS TOOK THEM OUT. Kasdan had good dialogue polish which is neat (and Lucas admits this, as he constantly shows how generous he is with credit, like giving Leigh Brackett credit for empire writing when she was doing a polish (little to plot imput) that would not be used AT ALL. He only gave her credit to be nice as she passed away), but George came up with 99% of the story and situations and atmosphere that make Star Wars Star Wars, like I dunno everything that goes into a movie other than nice dialogue. There are countless examples, but just read the making of books. They have everything you need to see how much of a visionary Lucas was from a narrative level to a production level. And yes, I wrote this horribly. Maybe I need a polish, I ask Kasdan.
My grandma and great uncle went to high school with George. Everyone called him four eyes. :/
Aw, that's sad. It's inspiring, though, when people can take the pain caused by bullying and turn it into empathy for other people, which leads to standing up for anyone who we see being bullied. George Lucas seemed to take it a step further still, as he wrote from the point of view of an isolated person who overcomes difficulties and becomes a hero who helps other people. George helped a lot of people over the years, including older, semi-retired actors whose retirement years were made better by the influx of cash. :-)
Thalia Panacea whoever bullied him must’ve regret doing that when they saw Star Wars
Supposedly, his LITTLE sister had to protect him from school bullies! 🤣
The right speaker channel is missing on a lot of your videos, this one included.
Blessings to you mr. George Lucas😊
It's sad because if he could live longer, I think he could take the time to make a good Star Wars trilogy. He's more experienced then ever and I think he sees it differently than he did when he did the prequels. Too bad he is too old and had to pass the torch on to a new generation
A new generation that, as you probably know 6 years later, doesn't understand Star Wars' core values.
I just rewatched all 6 and the prequals are sooooooo much better than the originals (not sarcastic)
+Jessie Christ Sooo, people who like good film making?
Nah that's right
+Jorafa (That Green Giraffe) If people liked good movies, they wouldn't like the originals either. I have said it before, both trilogy are flawed, but I won't blame one trilogy only. I blame Lucas for developing so poorly the both trilogies.
God is love.
Satan is love
+Emma Shipe God love's people, satan hete's.
Well it's definitely debatable. God as the character in the Bible has done a lot more horrible things than the Satan.
Who does Satan hate? God? Doesn't God hate Satan?
+Emma Shipe How does God hate something that does not exist?
My dilemma: I always assume all those things are known to everyone and therefore common currency. It's surprising when you encounter people and certain recurrent motifs engage them organically while you see them as deliberately set mechanisms. I guess, as per Mr. Lucas, these recurrent things are not in everyone's awareness and thus they are more susceptible to engagement with them...Interesting in saying "not in a contemporary mode where people could argue about it," defying this is the thin line that separates distinction and allegory. Once a viewer perceives allegory the whole game is up.
So Star Wars really isn't just a movie after all.
George Lucas Star Wars: underlying deep themes and motifs that seem to resonate and carry on through generations with a commentary on Vietnam.
Disney Star Wars: lul spaceships go pew pew, lightsabers go brrrr
I feel like holding up my lighter.
I disagree that all religions are worshiping the same God, but I do believe that when we establish common ground, it does take away the need and impulse to fight or war with others.
Left ear , enjoyed this , it has.
If the story in your movie is relevant to humanity then you're on to something
We Share The Same Beliefs. - George Lucas on the Meaning of "Star Wars".
You heard it, people. Star Wars is GOD.
+aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa There's only one God he said.
My gosh, these bad takes. They're everywhere.
Charlie: "And then you got Star Wars"
George: "...and it wasn't until Ford came along... "
This is proof that Star Wars is more than just "a movie about space wizards," and is proof that most people only eight years later don't understand.
He pretty much just described islam. Absolute monotheism and all religions are truth and come from the same source. Ie. God.
Without the the light side of the force, there is no dark. Without the dark, no light. Both must exist for either to be a thing, much like good and evil.
Free will to choose the light side of the force would mean nothing if the dark side wasn't an option. Which is why the wars will rage on in the galaxy. But in the hopes that good will triumph over evil always... if there is no war to be won, than good cannot triumph. There is nothing.
So what about the balance in the force? What does that actually mean? Should evil be as powerful as good? Did Ankin bring balance by destroying the Sith, or destroying the Jedi earlier?
I really don't know, in case you can't tell, I'm philosophizing on the go, and most of this is above my current level of thinking. For now I'll just go enjoy a lightsaber duel.
Humanity or Humility is that a question
I'm an atheist. I love and don't kill because I know what's right and wrong. Not because an ultimate dictator who watches me 24/7 and listens to my thoughts tells me to do so.
*****
You are funny :)
Yeah, but over the centuries it was much easier to instil a common morality in a community by using that method.
"I'm an atheist.."
(rolls eyes).. Here we go again.
He was saying that religion in its myriad forms is one way of reaffirming values that we have instinctively. The reason human society exists today is because, at any given point in human history, enough people decided it was easier and more beneficial to get along. That holds true no matter how far you go back, even unto the time when we were first climbing down from the trees. We fluctuate between periods of strife, yes, but no matter your creed or calling, every social paradigm is founded on the concept of fellowship. Whether your values comes from religion or from Star Wars makes no difference, because the values are fundamentally the same.
For those of you unable to understand what has just been mentioned, Here is a translation ''Durrr... oh no!! Someone mentioned religions!! Now I have to say I'm atheist so that when I go and wank myself to sleep, I can at least pretend that people think I am so enlightened LOOLL #IhavetoactlikeatotalknobjusttopretenthatIhavesomeselfvalue ''
say whatever we want about George; it's just a shame he didn't branch out more creatively with his writing while he had the chance. star wars and indy is all he'll be recognised for and most of the credit should be given to the people who created the magic of those films.
This man is a Genius. ✍🏿
This is a serious question to all the die-hard Star Wars fans out there:
In your opinion, why is Star Wars so successful and why do you think it became a pop culture phenomenon?
It came out at the right time; the summer of a year in the 70s; when movies tended not to be bombastically fun and simple: an action movie about good guys battling bad guys in space. THAT'S ALL IT REALLY WAS. And then it had 2 great sequels; making a cohesive trilogy! Add some revolutionary marketing, merchandising, and multiple parodies (plus more "conversation" by the even more financially successful prequel trilogy). That is why Star Wars was so successful.
musicalnotextr Bit more than that, when it come out.. nothing looked as real as it did.. and Star Wars movies created a new way of capturing and making Sci-Fi universe aswell as Movies in general. It took it a step further and set the bar.
It also improved the Sci-Fi genre which cool costume designs and creatures that also seemed very well thought out. What did they have back then? Doctor who? a Alien dressed as a trash can or something? StarWars for alot of people at the time made Sci-fi cool and fresh!
musicalnotextr
Oh shut up! You are not a Star Wars fan.
HangDeath True, the special effects were also very revolutionary for their time. They still look pretty good today; modern blockbusters could take a cue and realize that computers don't always make everything better; just look at the STAR WARS prequels.
FriendlyCroock Hey, he asked why it became a pop culture sensation, not why it was so great. I don't understand why you would be offended anyway. The 70s were a time when the movies weren't necessarily known for being a "fun event", especially space movies (see 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY; interesting movie to be sure, but watching it requires a bit of effort due to how cerebral it is). STAR WARS on the other hand was a movie set in space, but it didn't have the complex sci-fi mumbo jumbo tacted on to it (unless you count midichorians or politics in the prequels). It was a movie about a crack team of heroes fighting an oppressive empire that spans the galaxy. It had samurai sword fights, western-like shootouts, and World War I-style dogfights... IN SPACE! How could it not be fun? It may not have been written by Chris Nolan or anything, but it was exciting, a spectacle, and refreshing for the time. And it did hint at an interesting lore and mythos that was explored even further in EMPIRE and JEDI. That's why it was such a hit in the first place. And let's be honest: it's legacy wouldn't be what it is without its merchandising. As corporate and "evil" as that sounds to the cynical, it was inspiring for the children that got to own and play with STAR WARS toys and own STAR WARS stuff, especially since STAR WARS had themes of hope in times of getting beaten down and the merchandising were ultimately subtle reminders of that (plus it allowed kids to come up with their own ways to have fun, to tell new stories and even to make fan films of their own).
I'd like to think that what I said above actually glorifys STAR WARS, so I ask why do you have a problem with this?

JFC George Lucas is delusional to the core. He did not even create star wars all on his own. The idea was his of course, I guess since a child I'm sure he liked fantasy and stories and adventure, but the whole thing that star wars became what it became is due to a lot of talented people who helped him the first three movies together.
Whats the delusion? No director makes a movie by themselves. They use talented people to help them. They just direct! DIrect the art in the way they want it.
You can say all you want about the prequels but the fact is that they were all mayor suceses. Kids and teens loved the movies! I didn't love them and alot of older fans didn't, but more than enough people did.
So you can say what you want about the man but in the end of the day he is resposible for the most sucessfull film series in human history. That's no delusion, that's fact man.
George Lucas learned this from Joseph Campbell, a master on Mythology. Its not delusion.
Tjacksun He actually didn't write the whole script himself. He only wrote the entire scripts of the prequels, and they sucked. During the originals, he had help writing the first script and was only co-writing Empire and Return. It's funny because the movie not directed by George Lucas is the best Star Wars film, Empire Strikes Back.
"Don't kill people" unless they are younglings.
Their is evidence for the biblical God which you can check out yourselves. If their is a devil then he would create different religions to get people to worship him.

Jesus Christ loves you and died for your sins!
He is a real hero
Every religion except Christianity thinks you can do things to get to heaven. But in Christianity God came down as Jesus Christ in great love to pay for our own sins, that deserved death. Receive Him today!
Give credit where its due Lucas, admit you stole from islam and Sufism for Starwars, its literally 90% stop committing cultural appropriation. At least give credit to what you stole from.
Clone wars I miss it
It is said that Peter Jackson IS a Hobbit...And, you know, George Lucas IS an Ewok! I mean...just LOOK at him!
Lucas has a bloated idea of his intellect and importance. He is a child of the zeitgeist - more lucky than creative and intelligent - and would have easily been lost to time without the almost-forgotten but critical editing work done by his then wife, Marcia Lucas.
Thank god there's someone sensible here. Yes, he had an idea to make a modern Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers type movie, and did so by poaching movies like Hidden Fortress, 633 Squadron, Dam Busters, and Where Eagles Dare. To make it happen it took a fantastic bunch of expert SFX hippies, John Williams, Ralph McQuarrie, movie editors like Marcia, cameraman Gill Taylor, and tons of other talent. Where Lucas really shone was his abilities to run the business and make deals.
Omg even the islamic oral tradition! And Arabic tribes! He knows it all. He’s treading carefully.

The oral law is what Jesus rebuked. Also the entire story is essentially Gnostic showing the duality of good and evil not triumph of Good over evil.
Jesus is not Vader and Vader is not a lord but Jesus is the only Lord. Star Wars is hopeful not moking God and his only son.
