  • This is a clip off a documentary I bought years ago entitled "The World of Jim Henson." The doco was a biography on Jim Henson's career with the muppets and had many rare clips from different shows he did in the early days of the muppets.
This extract of the doco was about the first project Jim did with Frank Oz, and the birth of one of their best (and now lost) characters, Rowlf the Dog on the Jimmy Dean show.

I have loved Rowlf since I saw him first-run with Jimmy Dean.
Thanx for the magic and memories, Jim Henson, RIP.
Thanx so so so much for sharing, GB!
    This is so great!
    Rowlf forever!

You saw the actual first-run on the actual Jimmy Dean Show? That would be the early 60's, correct?

      Yep. I'm old.
It was between 1963 and 1966.

@@echoecho3108 Incredible, do you recall when the Jimmy Dean show used to be aired? in terms of what time and how often?
It must have been a treat to see the way in which Jim Henson would grow and hone his craft all the way to the Muppets.

The Jimmy Dean Show was in ABC from September 1963 till April 1966.
It was on once a week, for an hour. Sorry, I don't remember what night of the week it was on, but I'm pretty sure it was during the week, not on the weekend.
Jim Henson actually got his start on WRC-tv, in Washington, DC, with 'Sam and Friends', which was a short show after the evening news.
Kermit was introduced on that show, although he wasn't specifically a frog at that time.
That was a silly, fun show. I loved watching it after dinner, with my mamma and daddy.
There are some of The 'Sam and Friends' segments on RUclips. Sorry, I don't have any links, but you should be able to run a search in RUclips for them.

@@echoecho3108 Thank you for the information, it really paints a more expansive image for someone that wasn't born remotely close to the time.
Yes, I have heard of 'Sam and Friends' and seen a clip or two on RUclips, however I really didn't know that Kermit wasn't originally a frog!? Wow, that's news to me - after you stated this I researched what he was originally, and the best description was 'initially a vague lizard-like creature', my mind is blown!
I think what makes ol' Rowlf so lovable and amazing is the fact that his design didn't change and according to sources he was the most like Jim Henson himself. There is a small RUclipsr called 'Roland Speak' that did a great vid on the history of Rowlf - It's where I learnt that Rowlf was originally created to sell Purina Dog Chow! And yet he endured.

It was always a treat when I was allowed to stay up and see Rowlf (I thought his name was Ralph) on the Jimmy Dean show. Good memories.

LOL I don't blame Jimmy for cracking up at Rowlf's ad-libs. I would have had trouble keeping a straight face around a Muppet character if I were in his shoes.

Supposedly, Jimmy Dean's agent said he could get him 40% of the Muppets in exchange for the national TV exposure. But Dean said that he didn't deserve to cash in on Jim Henson's hard work, and told him no.

Here's a quote from Rowlf on "The Jimmy Dean Show." Well at least words to this effect.
Rowlf: "He's too nice to be a person. He should have been a dog."

What Jim Henson and the Muppets were best at was moderately ignoring the plot and focusing on the little moments. The newer movies and projects lack that mindset, I feel.
