    For the first time ever, I have a VERY POLITE Raccoon living nearby. He doesn't uproot stuff, just noses around here and there, and takes water without tipping over my fountain. My first 6 strawberries of the season were nearly perfectly ripe (in a large pot, hanging over the edge), and in one night he very carefully picked each strawberry. I double checked the plants - still rooted in perfectly. Perhaps I should name him the Pink Panther...he's such a well mannered thief. I hope he enjoyed them. :)

    I planted crowns of Ever Sweet strawberries in March, I’m zone 8 and just harvested a bowl full yesterday! Yum! I did plant them in grow bags.
    A little trick to keep birds from pecking the fruit: I painted some strawberry size rocks red as ‘decoys’ and put them around the plants before they began ripening. It is said that the birds will peck those red rocks a few times then stop as they are fooled into thinking that there are not any goodies to enjoy! I’m not sure if it works but so far they have left the berries alone!

    My father taught me to replace strawberrys after three years. So we always had three rows. We startet with one row. In the fall, we put the runners in the second row. The next year we took the runners from the second row for our third row. In the third year, we replaced the strawberrys from the first row with fresh runners. So we always had healthy strawberry plants. Our plants did not stand on a level bed, but, like potatoes, on earth ridges about 20 cm high, with the difference that the ridges were not created later by piling up the plants, but are planted directly on the ridges. By piling up, you achieve that the plant forms many more side roots than usual and can thus absorb more water and nutrients. The plants become stronger and the fruits larger.

    I've had strawberries planted in an old cast iron claw foot tub for atleast 5 to 6 years now. We moved it to our new house with us about 3 years ago and this is the first year they have done amazing. I have harvested a bunch already and still have tons developing!!! I blame this on you for teaching me so much since i found your channel about a year ago. I took a lot better care of the plants last year than i ever have and i truly believe its because of you!!

    If you plant one row of strawberries, you train the runners off to each side for next years crop, removing the mothers the following year and train the runners from the daughters back to where the mothers were originally. Do that a couple of times. When that crop is done, the plants are removed and fresh plants are purchased. That is how the strawberry farms do it here in northern Illinois. My problem is they do not winter over for me planted above ground in pots or raised bed, and I have no room I can get to in ground. My eighties are not working out the way I had planned.

    • @plot10homestead58
      @plot10homestead58 2 года назад +1

      In a home garden it's wise to leave the mother plants a bit longer, since the second year is often the most productive. Many practices used to grow for market are unnecessary in the home garden.

    • @dianeweeks352
      @dianeweeks352 2 года назад +1

      @@plot10homestead58 Removing the mothers the following year gives the mother plants two years to produce. Farms want no declining production, but great yields to sell. Home gardens adjust accordingly. Also depends on how much room you have to devote to the project.

    I work for a large strawberry farm in the Willamette Valley. We grow our strawberries in the ground, but we do have Root Weevils in the ground in Oregon, so be aware of Root Weevil signs. Also, be sure to bait for slugs regularly! We plant our strawberries in birms, to make sure they aren't subject to root rot. We water overhead with irrigation guns, and we have no problem with mold or mildew if you watch your weather and water at the right times of the days and do not overwater! Water as needed, so watch your plants. We have to totally replace and rotate our strawberries with wheat because strawberries will make your ground completely sterile if you leave them in place more than a couple of years. They are nitrogen hogs and you will need to fertilize for sure to get a good crop for more than two seasons. We move and replant strawberry fields every 3 years. The old plants lose their vigor beyond that. Also, we do not touch first year baby strawberries. We leave them on the plants and pick the field on year 2 and 3. At the end of year 3 harvest season, we disk them up and plant a cover crop to help replenish the soil so we can plant a different crop in that place. We then plant strawberries on a different piece of ground. We have 40 acres of strawberries and 80 acres of cane berries. This is a third generation berry farm, so lessons have been learned over the generations. We grow Hood, Shuksan and Mary's Peak varieties, which are the three best grown in Oregon, in our opinion. 🍓

    I had my eye on the potting shed the whole time you were talking; can't wait to see what you do with it! That potting shed is calling out for window flower boxes for sure! BTW, I'm 65 years old and have been watching you for years and this year I decided to start planting. {I have a yard that is an acre). I don't know how you do it but I'm really, really sore and can hardly walk by the end of the day. You make it look so easy!

      She wanted to do window boxes, but the the windows push outward, so has to forego that idea.

    I've had the same strawberry plants for 15 years, and they still produce just as many as the beginning. You don't have to get fresh ones every 2-3 years unless you have the money to do so. Most people don't have resources that commercial growers have to swap them out every 2-3 years.

    What is the progress on the Hartley and the potting shed? Are you going to show the big trees you bought and where they are going anytime soon? Are the trenches filled in? Has soding or planting begun around the Hartley? What does the medow look like? The Chicken coop area?

    You'll love the sea scape strawberry's I have had them for 5 years and they produce beautifully. I started with 12 plants and we usually put 8 or more gallons in the frezer.

    you should try Hood (mt hood) strawberries! you have to eat them basically straight off the stem but I SWEAR they are the best strawberry.

    Love this video so much! I usually wait for the evening to watch your videos but as soon as I saw the title I knew I had to watch it asap! I would love to see a video later in the season on runners, and what do to to care for strawberries, as well as which variety was your favourite!

    My brother took a couple strawberry plants from moms garden when he moved out a few years ago, now he have several sizable patches. Went over there and dug up like 20 plants, barely made a dent. They're growing like ground cover in a front porch bed and between stepping stones :D

    I first started watching your videos when I was pregnant with my first child, she’s nearly two now and this morning she managed to get my phone and an Instagram reel of Samantha Grace and Benjamin was playing, she was transfixed and watched it on repeat, looks like we have the next generation on garden answer and it is just as loved in our family as the first ❤️

    This year I have a lovely crop of strawberry plants that have grown up between the cement and blacktop. Vigorous babies. They are full of berries and I'm going to try covering them with voile and weighing it down with rocks. Hopefully it will keep out the birds and chipmunks

    I planted 2 flats of strawberries in greenstalks. 2 varieties grow well here in Texas Zone 8, Eversweet and Ozark Beauty. I get a handful everyday which I snack on as I water the garden or putter around in it.
    I would love to plant another greenstalk with Buried Treasure strawberries !

    what a fun surprise! yum yum... this is exciting, can't wait to see how the different varieties perform... question: pests like rolypoly (pill or sow) bugs, earwigs, and slugs.... YUCK but they do love the berries.. do you have issues with those? birds can also be a problem but there's bird netting for those.. but those "in ground" bugs can really mess up a pretty strawberry!! any ideas would be appreciated; i try to stay organic around all our edibles, as well... i'm growing this year's berries (we don't need many) in hanging baskets, so i'm hoping that solves my bug issues... can't wait to see the paint job on the flower cottage (you say shed, i say cottage, ha)... so many exciting projects on your agenda!! fun times! 🙂 ❤ thanks for the video!! 🙂 ❤
